The Standing Stones of Callanish
The Standing Stones of Callanish
Price: £14.60

5.0 out of 5 stars quality "new age" music, 24 April 2014
For lack of another relevant label, this is new age music - ie - it is suitable for background listening, quiet contemplation or even meditation and it is instrumental, using synths, but the overall feeling is traditional rather than electronic.

"Callanish" stands apart from so much of the music in this style in that it is well composed, interesting, moving...

Okay, it's not brilliant but it's still a very enjoyable nonsense story. The BB songs are not very good by his standard, which means they are still pretty decent. The widecreen picture quality is excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars high quality documentary TV, 1 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Further evidence - if it were needed - as to how much TV has progressively dumbed down.

Comprehensive, measured in pace, intelligent without being academic & totally lacking spectacular - but essentially pointless - CGI.

PS: The picture quality is lousy, but it should not spoil your "total immersion".

4.0 out of 5 stars They're only human..., 24 July 2013
This review is from: Very Best Of [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
Well this really is a very mixed bunch but there's lots to enjoy / laugh with.

The very early promo videos are utterly brilliant. My only complaint is that there is no circa "Travelogue" here. Could they not dust down "Only After Dark" or "Marianne" (superb stuff) & add some graphix?

After that we settle down to synth pop of varying quality, but at least you get the compensation of ludicrous plots, clothes & er, hairstyles.

Highlights: The Lebanon ("...and where there used to be some shops..."), Louise (weird) Human (R&B classic), The Stars are Going Out (sheer bldy genius).

5.0 out of 5 stars Break on Through, 28 May 2013
100% brilliance. All you need to know. "Dance on Fire" is a real mixed up bunch of videos but all the better for it. Admittedly the sound quality is not great but you have all the CDs anyway yeah? How on earth did Jim & co get away with such a ludicrous mixture... pretentious poetry, frothy pop and seriously warped rock'n'blues. Well, I suppose people are strange.

5.0 out of 5 stars top notch stuff, 2 May 2013

This really is an excellent album by Vangelis. It's good first listen & grows with every play. You may know the often used tunes "Hymne" & "L'Enfant" but it is the long tracks here which are truly stunning. If you liked the Chariots of Fire soundtrack you will no doubt love this.

As Jon Anderson would say "Wonderous".

5.0 out of 5 stars all you need to know really, 28 Feb. 2013

Excellent series from a time when good scripts & good acting were all that mattered!
* For picture - it's dreadful, which is inexcusable these days when powerful clean-up techniques abound.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as the original, but still a decent listen., 10 Dec. 2012
It seems that Jeff Wayne, like Jean-Michel Jarre, Mike Oldfield (& others no doubt) has finally given up trying to escape his masterpiece/debut and is now hell-bent on squeezing every last drop of juice from it. This is not a bad thing IMHO. First we had the stage versions, which were a refereshing take on the classic album. Now we have this "next generation" new version. So is it any good? Well, it's okay - not too different from the original, but some of the sounds are much more contemporary. Like I say, worth a few listens at least. The overall value of the album will probably depend on your liking (or not) of the vocalists. Liam Neeson's narration is fine, but can't possibly compete with Richard Burton's phenomenal original. As for the singers - they are mostly okay, but do not seem to have the theatrical intensity of the originals. Maybe that's the idea? Gary Barlow as Justin Hayward is probably the pick of the bunch. "Stars in their Eyes" awaits if the next Take That reunion tour falls through, Gaz.

5.0 out of 5 stars 100% untangentised!, 13 April 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The title probably says it all. TD fans will know all the music & most likely love it, so i won't attempt a review. Main thing is that the recordings have not been remixed, retouched, edited, tampered with, converted to 90s mush, etc.

As usual the complaints are to do with the package... poor notes, poor photos & one album (by Virgin's own admission - no "Kamikaze") completely absent. Why have CDs with 60 mins music?

To be fair this is nothing like as bad as some of EWF butchering - i mean remixing - classics, but as others note, why can't we have the originals & "remixes" on the same CD. There's room aplenty!
