What this biography showas is that a novelist does not have to wander very far to obtain his material from which to create a novel.
Updike draws inspiration from the 'small town America' where he grew up and its ethos which never left him. The book provides a good insight into the life of John Updike and indeed of America during the 20.th Century. At times this biography felt like a very long review of Updike's prolific work with the often long documentation of how each novel was received and reviewed by the literary establishment rather than a biography of the writer's actual life and achievements. I would like to have read more about why Updike was considered to be one of the most successful and poignant authors of the period.

However if one knew very little about the author before, l finished the book wanting to read more of his novels than l have presently read.

A good yarn about Spies and spying in post WW11 Turkey. I felt that it lacked subtlety the characters were rather stereotype. Good descriptions of Istanbul and l have to say that it has wetted my appetite to visit the place again and to view the Bosphorus. Found it hard to put down so l guess that l must have enjoyed it.

This was l thought a boring book about a reactionary type artist who goes to live in Italy. As a travel guide to Tuscany it is OK l suppose but the plot is weak and the ending a complete letdown. I was relieved to have got to the end of this rather tiresome novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Book from McEwean, 28 April 2014

This review is from: Saturday (Kindle Edition)
I found this book very informative if somewhat implausible. It had good pace and well developed characters who all had different and varied interests which McEwen seems to have the ability of transferring his knowledge of these subjects so convincingly to his readers through his characters. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and also the insight into the complexities of neurosurgery. I always feel that when l have finished one of Ian McEwan books that l cannot wait to begin the next.

I found that l was unable to put this book down and it nearly caused a divorce in my home!! Donna Tart has meticulously researched the art world and the world of antique furniture to provide me with one of the best books that l have ever read. Thank you Donna

A really well researched and informative book that l learnt so much from. Only decided to read this after reading 'Fatherland' and although this book in non fiction l enjoyed it equally as much. Very much appreciated the research combined with the storytelling. A wonderful and inspirational expereince

Well written and informative. Found it a bit tedious towards the end and that it lacked a final flourish but nevertheless hugely enjoyable.

I was so looking forward to reading this book as l am particularly interested in 'La Belle Epoche' and Paris at time. What a disappointment!. Perhaps it was the translation but most of the time l felt like throwing it in the corner.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Well Argued Case !, 26 Dec 2013

This, in my opinion is not a particularly easy read. However for those interested in how the Great War began it is hard to imagine a more informative book. I had no idea at how small the British participation had been in 1914. I liked the way that Hastings argues his case and without any firm evidence to the contrary have to agree with his conclusion as to where the main responsibility for the conflict lay. Although tedious at times l found it nevertheless a very good book
