3.0 out of 5 stars A dream come true?, 9 July 2009
This review is from: Lost in Austen [DVD] (2008) (DVD)
Entertaining, with some nice twists to the Pride and Prejudice plot. I would have liked to have seen more detailed adaptation problems. It seems too easy for the heroine to fit into Jane Austen's world, everyone accepts her leather jacket as the latest fashion from Hammersmith, her modern hairdo and whatnot, no problems with manners, accent, language. There's one nice detail about brushing your teeth when she is offered birch twigs and chalk - it would have been nice to see more of this. That said, I realize that historic detail is definitely not the point here. So, all in all it was quite amusing.

Very nice period piece, good acting, attractive gentlemen in high collars and the ladies in frills of course. Perfect if you like that kind of stuff.

3.0 out of 5 stars Well..., 9 July 2009
I bought this film in my quest to collect everything even remotely connected to Jane Austen on DVD, but the key-word here is "remotely". In terms of Jane Austen material, it seems rather a rip-off, as the film never rises above a mediocre ensemble piece where the various characters learn about life, their emotions, whatever. Predictable. The connection with Jane Austen's plots is thin. It's alright for mindless viewing, when you're really really tired, but on the whole not very satisfying.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well done, 9 Mar 2009
Very enjoyable, as long as you bear in mind that this has nothing to do with Jane Austen as we (don't) know her. It's very roughly based on events in Jane Austen's life, but more of a study of spinsterhood in the early 19th century and as such quite brilliant. MILES better than the unbearable "Becoming Jane", and Olivia Williams is excellent. Also very important in a Jane Austen film, at least to me: costumes, hair, sets. I think they got it just right: neither too drab nor too gaudy.
