Queen: The Best Of (Easy Guitar)
Queen: The Best Of (Easy Guitar)
by Hal Leonard
Edition: Sheet music

1.0 out of 5 stars Top Line only, 4 Feb 2012

This is a letdown. I have a number of Queen tab books and several look like transcriptions for a symphony orchestra. I don't care what "guitar part 3, 4, 5 or 6" might be playing!! I wanted a book that could cut through the multi-layers of complexity and come up with a basic guideline to make a reasonable stab at the tunes.

But this just gives the vocal line only. Bah!

Straight transfer from vhs, which is fine.

Excellent performances. Quality music. I wish Shapes Of Things was included because Gary did that so well.

Also didn't realise that Neil Carter sounds just like Gary singing - a perfect combination of musical talent. They had been together for some time and I was surprised Carter did not continue with Gary when he did the Blues thing, which was only a couple of years away.

Anyway, Gary said in an interview later he wanted to do Blues and get away from "Andy Pandy" stagewear - although a great musician Gary suffered from image problems. Why dress in military coats? Yes he looks uncomfortable All Dressed Up (ha ha) and the set looks daft (white boxes?) and that's the only downside here.

For the money it is well worth the purchase.

2.0 out of 5 stars Bittersweet, 4 Feb 2012
This could/should have been so much better. Where was John Sykes? John & Gary sharing the stage would have been fantastic. Instead, its all very one-sided. Fair enough, the concert would not have happened without Gary Moore. But to play Walking By Myself and Parisienne at this event, when there were countless Lizzy tunes desperate for an airing is frustrating. Probably goes to show how little input "Lizzy" had to do with it.

The version of Emerald is sad indeed. This was a standout track from the Live & Dangerous film, with Brian Robertson a superstar. Here he seems out of his depth, despite Gary willing him on, restraining his own power so as not to totally blow him away. Gary was a gentleman.

Dead Centre: (Nick Stone Book 14)
Dead Centre: (Nick Stone Book 14)
by Andy McNab
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Severn Bridge mystery, 19 Jan 2012
Yes, another Christmas made more bearable with two new McNab books. Very readable and enjoyable.

The scene setting is handled well as always. But why have the main character pay to enter England when crossing the Severn Bridge? So often with McNab's writing events feel authentic, which is why he is so good. Perhaps in a future assignment Stone could take on the government and get the tolls scrapped altogether!

1.0 out of 5 stars Cast and crew have fun, 27 Dec 2011
This review is from: Black Death [DVD] [2010] (DVD)
The story is the let down here. You are anticipating proceedings to kick off when the travelling band get to their destination, and confront the evil necromancers with the arse-splitting machine et al - but what we get is a damp squib. The group fall for the "poisoned wine" routine and the film just doesn't get going after that.

I was confused by the young priest expecting to rendezvous in the forest with a girl - how was that arranged between them without a mobile phone?

The extras show the filmakers had fun making the film - just wish it came across the other side of the camera lens.

5.0 out of 5 stars Haunted horror, 21 Dec 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I like the idea of making this a haunted house in space rather than having recognisable creatures doing their thing with the human space travellers. As the director says in the interview section of the extras disc.

The only complaint is that the film should have been twice as long, to give the stories events more time to develop. As it stands events appear rather rushed. But then budgets had to be worked to.

The sequences with the wife of Sam Neil's character are truly haunting.

Its also slightly reminiscent of Hellraiser 2 in that a main character fully embraces Hell.

2.0 out of 5 stars Demons meets Gremlins, 21 Dec 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is rather like the thrash metal of horror films.

The soundtrack is truly appalling - it goes from barely audible to just audible, with dialogue hardly discernable. Sometimes the picture flickers so you assume it has been transferred from a VHS tape.

I guess the story revolves around a birthday party for a young woman held in high-rise apartment. Quite why she shuts herself away to watch a horror film on TV when her pals are partying in the next room is confusing. Anyway, the demon who enters her life (via the TV screen) and her own transformation into a maleviolent creature are suitably horrible.

There are periods in the film where little happens and should have been edited out. For example, one of the party guests is left standing outside and we see too much of him doing nothing.

Another major let-down with the film is the ridiculous and childish creature that erupts from a demonized child. It looks like it is straight from the Gremlins films and ends up in some unfunny chase in a sequence that had me thinking of a Laurel & Hardy film. If only it was of that quality.

As for the extras, I could not find any commentry but there is a short film that is more interesting than the main feature. It ends suddenly so I guess its a taster - but there is nothing to explain its inclusion.

I saw Demons 20 years ago and remember it being better than "2" - like the other reviews here suggest it is.

This review is from: State Of Shock (MP3 Download)
As often happens, the first album you here by a band happens to be the best. There follows much time and expense buying earlier and later albums, but none match that first collection. This album is full of classic rockers and TN shows why he was the guitar King with great, inventive playing and occasional tounge in cheek.

Scream Dream followed a year later and was a total letdown, coming over as brash and dumb compared to this far superior work.

Prior to SOS was Weekend Warriors which had a trio of tracks that would fit alongside the SOS tunes perfectly - TN's writing was moving on to a more NWOBHM style.

5.0 out of 5 stars The last great Frankenstein, 11 Dec 2011
Since this movie was produced there have been no further Frankenstein films made - incredible as its almost 40 years. I guess it's because Zombie flicks have taken on the mantle of the "once alive now they are dead they live to kill" role. Why have a movie with just one homicidal creature when you can have lots - to fill the screen with multiple murder and mayhem?

Whatever, this film is great. No Frankenstein before was better - or indeed bloodier - and remains censored beyond belief. A great shame why Hammer etc movies have been released in dribs and drabs with such inconsistency.

Dave Prowse was never better - or heroic.
