4.0 out of 5 stars Overall a good read, 22 April 2013

Some of the stories are excellent and most are good but it got a bit repetitive towards the end. I had thought that they would all be written by Bourdain which was why I purchase it in the first place but only one or two are by the man himself, the rest are a collection of notable food writers. Fortunately their contribution's are not just lists of what they ate - but how food played a significant role on a particular occasion

Gave it up after 300 pages. Do I understand the city any better? No. Do I feel I have visited the city? No. Humour? Never. Suspense or surprise? Not on your life.Did I find it an interesting read.? Most definitely no. Just aimless meandering - which at one time seamlessly drifted out of India into China in a pointless page filling sort of way. Why bother?

5.0 out of 5 stars A delightful read, 7 April 2013

I was sorry to reach the end of this moving description of a lonely man's pilgrimage which explores his frosty relationship with his cold wife. How they both grow to understand each other and themselves through distance and reflection. Strongly recommend this book which made me laugh and cry in equal measures

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a gripping read, 7 April 2013

Rather boring with alternate chapters featuring the present and the past life of the main character with no connectivity. If you like the thought of an elephant slipping on its own excrement and sitting on an armed gangster thereby killing him then this is a book for you. Me? I gave up after three hundred pages of similar nonsense

Loved this book, bleak, dark and moving. Have recommended it to friends and colleagues. Was sorry to reach the end
