4.0 out of 5 stars Shostakovich's 'Leningrad' Symphony by the Halle, 19 Jun 2014
Written in Leningrad (now St Petersburg) in 1941, Shostakovich's 7th Symphony came to symbolise the resistance and stubborn determination of the defenders of the city against the Nazi threat as it was besieged during the Second World War. It is a dramatic and intense work with superb use of the instrumental colours of the orchestra. The beauty of the woodwind writing is especially poignant.

The symphony begins with an almost pastoral theme which is taken up by the piccolo and violin depicting the people's love of their city. However, this develops into a repetitious, militaristic marching theme as the music gradually rises towards a crescendo and more threatening in demeanour, building to a shuddering climax. Mark Elder takes this more leisurely than some interpretations of this work but the dynamic range covered is truly astounding. The movement ends with a beautiful elegiac theme on strings before elements of the marching theme re-enter.

The second movement is a scherzo recalling happier times and includes a gentle, lyrical theme which builds in intensity. The third movement has a mood of sadness about it, introduced by solemn chords leading to a melody in the strings but later becomes a theme of menacing intensity. The final movement starts without a break and the tempo quickens and builds in a struggle between life and death having the feel of a requiem mass.

This is a very fine work and is very popular in orchestral programmes and there are many great recording of it. The Halle's recording is up there with some of the best and has trmendous dynamic range and beautiful woodwind and string playing and I recommend it to you. But also consider the recordings by the St Petersburg Philharmonic under Ashkenazy; the fine set by the WDR Sinfonieorchester under Rudolf Barshai and the RLPO/Vasily Petrenko.

This review is from: Love Letters (Audio CD)
This is a really fabulous recording of a superb drummer as leader of a top flight band featuring Roy Haynes (drums); Kenny Barron or David Kikoski (piano); Dave Holland or Christian McBride (bass); Joshua redman (tenor sax); John Schofield (guitar). Recorded at the Avatar Studios, New York on 23-24 May, 2002, featuring standards and some newer tunes given a real, tight workout. But it is the quality of the recording itself which brings this into your living rooms as if the players were right in front of you. Just close your eyes and you are there. Very highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars British Orchestral Works by lesser known composers, 12 May 2014
This is the 3rd volume in Cameo Classics series of orchestral works by little known British composers and feature premiere recordings.

Joseph Holbrooke (1878-1958) wrote his 4 movement ballet suite 'Pantomime' for string orchestra at the turn of the 20th century and first conducted it in November 1909 at His Majesty's Theatre, London. The music describes the love story of Pierrot and Pierrette in a moonlit garden. The movements are entitled 'Arlequin', 'Columbine', 'Pantalon' and 'Clown'. This miniature suite is a fine example of Holbrooke's orchestral style and is beautifully played by the Malta PO, who feature in all three works on this CD.

The second work is a tone poem by Scottish composer, Sir Alexander Campbell Mackenzie (1847-1935) entitled 'La Belle Dame sans Merci', commissioned by the Philharmonic Society for their 1883 season and based upon a similarly titled poem by Keats. Mackenzie studied in Germany and at the Royal Academy in London. He was a fine violinist from a young age taking after his father and grandfather. He was also a popular conductor. He became one of the leading British composers of the Victorian era, mainly known for his oratorio, 'The Rose of Sharon'. Knighted in 1895, he wrote many successful choral works and set poems by many Scottish poets. His orchestral works are both imaginative, evocative and descriptive in their structure and are fine examples of his use of orchestration to depict his chosen subjects. This tone poem, 'La Belle Dame sans Merci', lasting just under 19 minutes is a very fine work indeed and gave me much pleasure as I listened to it repeatedly.

The final work on this CD is by Sir Arthur Somervell (1863-1937), who was born in Windermere and studied with both Hubert Parry and Charles Villiers Stanford. He is best known for five song cycles, but also wrote many sacred works and orchestral music in the German Romantic style. He also had an excellent reputation as a musical educator, particularly for his schools music. His only symphony, subtitled 'Thalassa' (Greek goddess of the sea) is a 4 movement work, premiered by the LSO under Arthur Nikisch in February 1913. It is very much in the Brahmsian style, and has a quote '...immortal sea...' above its first movement. The second movement, entiltled 'Elegy' is a tribute to Captain Scott's Antarctic Expedition of 1912, and features a beautiful melody on the cor anglais. The third movement is inscribed with a line from a poem by Keats, 'Magic casements looking on the foam of faery lands' evoked by phrases in the woordwinds and plucked strings. The finale quotes James Harris' poem, 'The Daemon Lover', which provides a glorious and exuberant end to this fine, but little known symphony.

All 3 works on this CD are sympathetically played by the Malta PO under their conductor Michael Laus. Thoroughly recommended.

Miklos Rozsa is perhaps not that well known in the classical repertoire, albeit that many recordings of his music have been released on the Naxos label including a Rhapsody for Cello & Orchestra, 3 Hungarian Sketches, a Viola Concerto, a Violin Concerto a Hungarian Serenade etc, but he is best known for his wonderful film scores. Here are superb recordings by the BBC Philharmonic under the baton of Rumon Gamba of 4 suites from the scores of the films, The Thief of Bagdad, Jungle Book, Sahara and Ben Hur. Grandiose music that sets the scene for these screen epics. This is wonderful orchestral music which can truly be enjoyed seperated from the films as great music. Great recording quality helps these scores to shine.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Beatles as Chamber Music, 10 May 2014
Well, this CD was certainly a very pleasant surprise. This is a selection of 12 well known Lennon and McCartney songs written for the Beatles and one (Here Comes the Sun) from the pen of George Harrison. All have been arranged by Lubos Krticka, a Czech composer of chamber music, who is also well known in the Czech rock and jazz music scene.

This CD shows how well the superb songs of Lennon/mcCartney can be adapted for other music genres. You don't think it will work, but unexpectedly, it most certainly does. The melodies are at times well hidden within the string quartet arrangements, but careful listening reveals them in a truly different light.

The Wihan Quartet, also from the Czech Republic are very well known on the British chamber music scene and they are shown to be capable of treating these songs with great respect, tenderness and loving care, in the rich sound of a top quality recording. My favourites are the slower Beatles ballads performed here: Julia, Michelle, Yesterday and The Fool on the Hill, but the uptempo numbers such as Eleanor Rigby, Can't Buy Me Love and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, also come over very well.

For lovers of both the Beatles music with tastes wide enough to accept these melodies in an unexpectedly different format, and also lovers of the string quartet repertoire, here is a recording to treasure and it is a superb disc. I strongly recommend it to you.

Enjoy!

This CD features 2 symphonies by Philip Glass in his own inimitable style, but based on 2 of David Bowie's albums from many years ago. Fine music, well constructed and a great listen.
