This Norwegian jazz pianist has his very own melodic new-age style of jazz and I have all his CDs. This latest is a superb example of his quartet style (piano/sax/bass/drums). Really great acoustic jazz. Try it; you won't regret it!

A very good CD of Christian music. Some tracks excellent but the style is similar throughout. Needs more variety, I feel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ignaz Brüll: Symphony in minor; Serenade No. 1 (19th Century Jewish German Composers Volume 2), 20 Feb 2014
What a wonderful discovery this CD was!

Ignaz Brüll (1846-1907) was born in Prossnitz, Moravia to a musical Jewish family and young Ignaz was encouraged to pursue a career in music as he had considerable talent at an early age, particularly at the piano. (His 1st & 2nd Piano Concertos are available on a Hyperion recording by Martin Roscoe) He began composing in his early teens and his 1st Piano Concerto and the opera 'Das Goldene Kreuz' show great promise. He became close friends with Brahms once the family had moved to Vienna and Brüll's music shows considerable influence of the older composer, being strongly Romantic, but I also find Bruckner to be another influence or perhaps it was the other way round.

Brüll's Symphony in E minor, completed in 1880, is a fine work and should be much better known. Strong hints of Brahms pervade the score and it is skilfully constructed. Opening with an introduction in the low strings leading to a theme of richness and significant melodic expression. It is followed by a gentle Allegretto of lighter orchestration. The lively Scherzo has a robust, hugely tuneful section and the central trio is a romantic delight. The finale, the longest movement at just over 12 minutes, has a slow march-like theme of great beauty. A faster section drives the music forward, with lower strings and woodwind prominent, and the melodic strands are cleverly brought together before the movement winds down to its conclusion.

Brüll's First Serenade is in 6 movements of wonderful melodic invention, delicacy and beauty. It has a Viennese dance-like quality that is particularly appealing and would make a very popular addition to concert programming.

This is a fine disc on the Cameo Classics label, and this is the World Premiere Recording of these works made in 2007 by Marius Stravinsky and Belarussian State Symphony Orchestra. My only criticism of this recording is that the upper strings can sound rather shrill, otherwise, it is a delightful disc. Highly recommended for the music it contains!

Augusta Read Thomas Selected Works for Orchestra
Augusta Read Thomas Selected Works for Orchestra

3.0 out of 5 stars Selected Works for Orchestra by Augusta Read Thomas (American Contemporary), 1 Feb 2014
Augusta Read Thomas is a composer unknown to me before this release. She was born in Glen Cove, New York in 1964, and studied composition at Yale University and the Royal Academy of Music in London and is currently Professor of Composition at Chicago University.

This CD of 6 orchestral works range from 1995 - 2013 and provide a good indication of her style of composition. 'Aureole' for orchestra opens with a brass and percussive fanfare, which does not develop much over its 7+ minute span. It has insistent bell-like sonorities but without a recognisable melody to latch on to.

'Words of the Sea' is a 4 movement concerto for orchestra again features 'diamond-bright' sounds in both the percussion and high strings of the orchestra and give the impression of an edgy, storm-like scenario. The second movement provides a brief episode of calm before a fast scherzo of jagged random notes on brass and percussion take hold once again. The piece ends with a movement called '... mountainous atmospheres of sky and sea' and is in homage to Debussy. It certainly gives the listener a thrilling sea voyage to experience.

'In My Sky at Twilight' for soprano and ensemble presents Christine Brandes with two songs, 'Deeper than all roses' and 'Lament'. The title comes from a poem by Pablo Neruda but a number of other poets also feature and focus on love as its subject. Brandes has a fine, Straussian voice and she handles the moods of the texts well, creating an eerie, atmospheric mood. This is a lovely work.

'Carillon Sky' is a piece for winds, brass, percussion and string quartet as is less strident than the preceding orchestral works. Thomas calls it a violin concerto, but the violin is often exposed by sparse accompaniment.

'Terpsichore's Dream' is a work featuring n abundance of pizzicato strings and bell-like sonorities in a piece of balletic quality, hence its title using the Greek muse of dance. There is also a gamelan-like quality typical of Indonesia in this work.

The final work here is 'Silver Chants the Litanies' beginning with a fine horn solo before the 18 piece chamber orchestra joins in. The feel again is generally percussive and fanfare-like being a collection of disparate sounds that do not seem to be developed.

This is very difficult music to like at first hearing, but with perseverance, I'm sure I will grow to appreciate it in time.
If you're looking for something completely different in the contemporary classical scene, give it a try!

This is a very good value for money product. Good instructions, easy to fix to the house wall and very clear signage. Only problem I had was that the holes of the template and those of the acrylic plate did not match up perfectly but this was easily overcome.

Holst The Hymn of Jesus and Delius Sea Drift & Cynara
Holst The Hymn of Jesus and Delius Sea Drift & Cynara
Price: £11.06

5.0 out of 5 stars Holst Hymn of Jesus; Delius Sea Drift & Cynara Halle Orch, 30 Sep 2013
The Hallé Orchestra and Chorus under the directorship of Sir Mark Elder are on a roll at the present time. Having just overwhelmingly won the Gramophone magazine's Annual Award for Best Choral recording with their CD of Elger's lesser known oratorio, 'The Apostles', they are out to repeat this success with another fine choral recording.

This latest CD features Holst's choral masterpiece, the 'Hymn of Jesus'and two works by Frederick Delius, 'Sea Drift' for baritone, chorus and orchestra and his little known 'Cynara' for baritone and orchestra. Holst's 'Hymn' opens with a haunting prelude played by trombones and cor anglais based on the plainsong melody, Pange Lingua, leading to Vexilla Regis, played on the organ. The Hymn itself follows with full double chorus which creates a sound filled with tension and drama. This is beautifully recorded and every detail of voices and instruments are remarkably clear within a huge vista of aural magnificence.

Roderick Williams is the featured soloist in the Delius works that follow. His rich, warm chest voice is ideal for these pieces and he is again superbly recorded. 'Sea Drift' is based on Walt Whitman's poem, 'Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking' and is a wonderful work and rightfully regarded as one of Delius' best compositions. The work flows and Delius described it to his amamuensis, Eric Fenby thus: 'the shape of it was taken out of my hands as I worked and was bred easily and efortlessly of the nature and sequence of my particular musical ideas and the nature and sequence of the particular poetical ideas of Walt Whitman that appealed to me.'

'Cynara' was the mistress of the poet, Horace in classical literature. Delius' work is based on a poem by Ernest Dowson. Again, Roderick Williams is in fine voice and sings the verses with feeling, warmth and great beauty, ably accompanied by the Hallé under Mark Elder. 'Cynara' was dedicated to the memory of English composer, Peter Warlock.

This is a highly recommendable recording of the best of English vocal and choral music. You may buy with confidence of lasting musical pleasure. Enjoy!Holst: The Hymn of Jesus - Delius: Sea Drift, Cynara

If you watched the Wallander detective series last year starring Kenneth Branagh, you will already have heard this lady sing on the theme tune used in the drama. Here is another set of original songs, sparsely sung in Emily's unique style. Highly recommended.

Martha Argerich is well known for supporting her younger musician friends at her annual festival in Lugano. 2012 was another excellent year and the mesmeric playing of Argerich and her fellow musicians is again from the top drawer.

Excellent value stands which solidly support bookshelf speakers. They can be filled with sand or similar dense material to improve stability further and deaden any resonances heard from the metal construction of the stands.
