5.0 out of 5 stars Three Floors, House and Garden, A Simple Solution to Both Problems, 16 Aug 2014
When the courier delivered this the doorbell in situ played 'Jingle Bells'. During a heatwave Christmass carols get old very quickly so I was relieved when this came.
The simple genius of this is having two receivers; the portable one is the size of a pack of cigarettes so can be carried in any pocket. Mine can receive at the upper floor of the house and also out in the garden.
The other obvious advantage is that people with defective hearing can place the portable unit within a couple of feet from their ears.
A satisfying bing bong repeated is such a relief from the random tunes inflicted upon me by the cheap and nasty itemit is replacing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Small Beginners Guide, 16 Aug 2014
At thirtytwo pages there are obvious limits to what a pamplhlet can show. There are ninety six items listed and about eighty are illustrate in colour. Unfortunately the items can all be covered by a thumbprint but at least it give some ideas of the pottery and porcelain of the region and period.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Beginners Guide, 16 Aug 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Arts and Crafts Style (Hardcover)
Reasonably large format with a colour plate on every other page this is a good beginners guide to the subject, The author covers the precursors with the obsessions for japanese and gothic revival influences right up to the edge of the modernist movements like the Bauhaus. All the major names are covered plus a section on the American versions with the likes of Frank Lloyd Wright. Not just concentrating on the U.S. and U.K the likes of Klimt are illustrated here.
The tendency to allow fabrics, textiles and wallpaper designs is mercifully avoided but a page just about the Martin brothers with no illustration to accompany it is a repeated habit I did not care for.
A good overall beginners guide with an extensive bibliography for further research.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Does What It says On The Tin, 16 Aug 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As Curator of the V and A Roy Strong had an easy task finding items to fill such a book. The nightmare must have been the choice of items to leave out.
Nice large format, coloured plates on every page, alphabetically arranged with a good bibliography and index this is one of the few titles that can be relied upon to do exactly what it says. It also does not confine itself to just the major names; plenty of the smaller or less well covered aspects and names of the period are commented upon here.
An excellent beginners guide to the subject.

5.0 out of 5 stars All Stupid, All True., 16 Aug 2014
This is a great book to dip into if you are the kind of person who respects the title. My fathers favourite saying was "You could not make it up". This is one of those books. It reminds me slightly of 'the book of heroic failures' for its sense of the ridiculous culled from actual reports of real events.
If you can see the macabre black humour in an example like the man who drowned while trying to hang himself from a bridge this book wll appeal to you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Form, Function, Performance Plus Good Looks, 16 Aug 2014
For a change a design team has produced an item that answers a customers needs rather than looking cool. But it does look really cool and the bigger but is the functionality. A stand for a tablet is a grat item, bit one that turns into a speaker that connects via bluetooth or jack is even better. And one that recharges from the samesources as tablets. And connects to a phone so you can receive and answer phone calls without changing any connections. The list goes on. Of course it would be useless if the sound was rubbish but this mske music stored on tablet and phone come alive in a rich full sound youcould not imagine. Overall a brillliant piece of design.

3.0 out of 5 stars Some Use As Fifth or Sixth Book, 14 Aug 2014
I despair of U.S. publishers ever recognising the importance of a good index. At the end there is a section listing all the views but I am particularly interested in tracking down the wares of three minor english factories, namely Riley, Rogers, and Turner. All three were represented here but without bookmarks I would never be able to find them again.
Having close to seven hundred pages with an illustration on each page sounds quite impressive but the printing is not the sharpest and the amount of white paper due to the size of the plates is disappointing.
The text and explanations are adequate but this is one more American book by an enthusiastic author with a format that could do with some improving. After the volumes by Coysh and Henrywood have been purchased this is one in a dozen that helps fill in the gaps. Top ten, but outside the top five.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Very Useful Picture Book., 14 Aug 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book is of little use to a collector of nauticalia. I used to deal with a few collectors and even at the time of publication the majority of the items shown here were scarce or reserved for museum type collectionsIn fact most of the items shown would be the pride of a museum. There were a few too many American itemss for my taste and their availabilty here would always be limited.
This is a book on antique nautical items rather than nauticalia that a collector would find available on the market outside of specialist auctions. Not much relevance, and who needs instructions on how to use a sextant anyway?

5.0 out of 5 stars Heavy Capacity for Four Items, 11 Aug 2014
The critical term in the description is 5Amp rather than just the 4 ports. The heavy output means that I am using a Samsung Galaxy while nephew is using an ipad and charging his iphone and we are listening to music via bluetooth speakers. And using the items takes more power than just charging the items so we have a winner here.Having surge and overload protection built in means no worries about leving things on overnight.
The AC cable is provided and is a reasonable length so you are ready to go within seconds of opening the box..

1.0 out of 5 stars Reprint With Important Items Missing, 11 Aug 2014
No Stars should be awarded to this waste of trees. It is little more than an unreliable list written during a war by a clergyman who stinted himself on purchasing chargers because it took money away from his missionay work.
the lack of plates and original poor illustrations would make this item dear at five pounds
