Second in Anderson's US War of Independence trilogy.
Great book to allow children to understand the issues around gaining independence, including the lack of rights to black slaves and women.

This is a great little cosy mystery. Within the genre it was a good read - mildly amusing, kept me guessing until the end and with interesting and credible characters. There is a bit of flitting back and forth between English and American vernacular which at first I wasn't sure about but it fitted the story.
For a bit of light relief this hit the spot - I would read more of Marty Wingate.

This is an easily accessible story of the build up and first stage of the US Civil War. It is written from various viewpoints which I found particularly useful as otherwise you get a one dimensional narrative. It is a book that lends itself to young adult readers or those who like an easy read. We found it useful for background to this time in history.

I read the first couple of chapters and it was like the author had swallowed a list of adjectives and adverbs - every single scene was swamped in words, words, words!! For example chapter 1 ' a young cockerel screeched its immature greeting to the fast approaching dawn.' 'Snatching up her BROWN,COARSE, WOOLLEN overdress, Bessie crept QUIETLY over the ROUGH, BARE, floorboards, away from her sleeping family towards the OPEN hatchway and DEFTLY descended the WOODEN steps.' Maybe this wouldnt bother you but within just a few pages it became so laborious that I could not continue.

4.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't kindle adjust this better? and if not, 17 Feb. 2015

This is a clear and helpful book on parenting skills and listening to your children.

My only problem with this is for Amazon Kindle - this book has comic strip pages to demonstrate role plays - on kindle it is tiny to see even when font enlarged. Later on the flip side, there are pages of assignments for you to 'write' in your own experience or response - obviously not possible on kindle - but these pages dont fit on the kindle properly unless the font is squished down to the smallest size. So the reader has to repeatedly change the font settings to read either the comic strips or the assessments. Couldn't kindle adjust this better? and if not, why cant Amazon tell us that parts of the script are difficult to access in this format? I would prefer to know such information before buying. However this book is worth reading anyway!

This is the best chapstick on the market and I was unable to find it any more in the shops so ordered it. Most chapsticks simply coat the lips to protect them but do not heal any cuts in the skin. This provides the protection to prevent further damage AND heals lips that are already sore. It does not sting nor have any nasty chemical flavour.
Another reviewer had issues with the 'dispenser' but I have used it for years and the mechanism to wind it up and down has not failed, neither have mine had to be manually pushed back down making it mushy.
For me, it is the best chapstick!

4.0 out of 5 stars reconstructing amelia, 15 May 2014

This is an unusual type of book. It is 'crime' in a way but also about coming-of-age, family relationships, bullying and identity. We follow the story from both the mother and the daughter's viewpoints. We know from the start that Amelia fell to her death, committing suicide, while at her very expensive school but when Kate receives an anonymous text saying that Amelia did not jump the story takes on a more sinister twists.

This is really a punchy story of teenagers and what they will and wont do to fit in. There are plenty of twists and turns, but what
Kate realises is how little she knew of Amelia's life.
Good book, plenty of food for thought concerning who is responsible for a teenager's well-being, how far should a parent interfere, what peer group pressure can lead to and how rapidly the world is changing.

Farmer Boy (Little House (HarperTrophy))
Farmer Boy (Little House (HarperTrophy))

5.0 out of 5 stars Farmer Boy, 28 Nov. 2013

This is the story of the man Laura Ingalls married - Almanzo Wilder. It follows him as a young boy aged 9. There is an immense amount of detail of life on a large, farm, the chores, the animals, the manners the parents required - it is a wonderful account.

Having read all the Little House books I have to say this is one of the best particularly if you have a boy - this is more accessible to a young boy reader as the protagonist is male and so easily empathised with. Almanzo is the youngest of 4 children and his lowly status among his siblings is amusing at times.

In addition to how good the story is I have to add that THIS copy is absolutely beautiful - the illustrations are so lovely they add a great deal to the quality of the book - so much so my child wants to sit down and try to copy some of the pictures. If you are thinking of getting Farmer boy do buy the illustrated version by Garth Williams.

These are consistently good books for children - particularly boys. My son and several friends children have become totally engrossed in Redwall and they are solid chunky reads for children. Anything that captures the imagination and keeps them reading has to be useful!!
