Les aventures de Buck Danny, Tome 1 : Sabre sur la Corée
Les aventures de Buck Danny, Tome 1 : Sabre sur la Corée
by Arroyo
Edition: Album
Price: £9.81

5.0 out of 5 stars Buck Danny Classic: excellent spin-off!, 9 Feb. 2014
I am very glad with this first album of the new Buck Danny spin-off. The drawings by Jean-Michel Arroyo, the scenario by Fréderic Zumbiehl, the region and the period (during Korean War)of the adventure, great! So far I have found no inconsistencies with the regular Buck Danny series. Congratulations to the authors and publishers. This is not a competition, but Jean-Michael Arroyo has exceeded Francis Bergèse. This is the first volume from the diptych "Duel in Korea". The 2nd album is "Duel over Mig Alley" with less jokes with Lt. Sonny Tuckson and a more visable Jerry Tumbler by the way. Great that we have a reunion with the heroic US-army nurse Susan Holmes in the next diptych. Miss Holmes is already painted on the fuselage of a B-26 Invader (page 14 of volume #2). But back to this volume #1: I had no choice regarding the cover-colours (blue sky [modern] or an orange sky [vintage]), but I'm glad that the colour of the received album was orange: historical, isn't it? As the story is between album #12 and #13 of the regular Buck Danny series and have a vintage look too.
I'm looking forward to read the next albums of this great spin-off series. Summary: "Sabres sur la Corée/Sabre in Korea": recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Impossible to play disc 'A Journey to the Highlands', 20 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Although this series is great, my Blu-ray player isn't able to detect disc 'A Journey to the Highlands'- episode 3.9 (disc-number 8291626-11/R0).
With help of the excellent After-Sales from Amazon-UK I received a second boxset, but the problem with just this disc remains.
Of course I tried 2 other Blu-ray players from 2 other brands and still the messages on their displays after a too long period of loading: 'disc unknown' or 'no disc', and their trays open. I also went to a local retailer and none of his Blu-ray players could detect this disc either.
Just one player, after more than 20 attemps, was able to detect -after (too) long periods of loading- 'BDMV' and could find the episode and played it trouble free. However, after player on/off, again on the display: 'disc unknown'.
It looks like the Blu-ray players are missing some data caused by a production failure (detecting info on disc #8291626-11/R0).
Amazon-UK now offers a refund, but as the 12 other Blu-ray discs in both boxsets are OK, I prefer the manufacturer to produce and send a no faulty disc.
I today have send an email to UniversalPictures-UK too to ask for a solution.

Dvd ~ Ed Bishop

5.0 out of 5 stars A Blu-ray release is the next step..., 26 Jan. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have to admit, before Gerry Anderson recently died, I didn't know this Sci-Fi tv-series, as it was never aired on Dutch televison. Thanks Google I noticed this series also, and I now know that UFO is very popular in neighbouring country Germany, the UK, Japan and especially Italy. When the German 2nd TV-channel (ZDF) broadcasted UFO, I was in the army by the way.

As I was convinced UFO would be an excellent tv-series and in my family there are 4 region-free multi-players (OPPO, DENON, Pioneer), and the recent Japanese Blu-ray release including shipping, is too expensive, I ordered this 8 disc DVD 'megaset'. Better late than never.

A lot is already told about UFO, but I like to add: UFO had all the elements in the making that a Sci-Fi show was all about, it even digressed in certain areas, to add variety, but the real main strength of UFO was the character dynamics and interactions, the actors and actresses were perfectly cast in their roles. It's a shame UFO went only 1 season.

As far as I know almost everyone involved with the making of UFO has died, fortunately some women are among us (like Sylvia Anderson, Gabrielle Drake, Wanda Ventham, Jane Merrow), and today some futuristic cars from UFO are being restored.

The video and audio are great, although the video is less when there are 4 episodes on a disc instead of 3 (disc 4 and 8). And I like the audio comments from Sylvia and Gerry Anderson, Ed Bishop and Wanda Ventham on some episodes.
On YouTube I saw some clips of a Blu-ray UFO, a Japanese, restored release, looks excellent.
This series deserves a decent Blu-ray release, outside Japan too: 'the next step'.
Be aware, the German Blu-ray release -with 9 episodes on 1 disc- is in DVD quality (SD).

Summary, I recommend this 'megaset': like in Germany and Australia, all the 26 episodes on 8 discs in 1 DVD box set. Excellent Sci-Fi tv-series on a great DVD transfer.
I now feel obliged to promote UFO and this box set in my country (Holland).
The delivery took 2 weeks.

My ratings: tv-series UFO (1970): 4.5/5. DVD transfer: 5/5.

Tatort: Reifezeugnis

5.0 out of 5 stars Tatort's best episode so far!, 14 July 2012
This review is from: Tatort: Reifezeugnis (DVD)
'Reifezeugnis' aka 'For Your Love Only' is the most successful episode of the popular German/Austrian crime tv-series 'Tatort' ('Crime Scene'). This episode (season 1, vol. 73) was produced in the summer of 1976 and first aired on German TV on Sunday-evening March 27, 1977. For Your Love Only with more than 25 million viewers (and the viewers in the neighboring countries were not counted...), still exceeds the level of the more than 700 Tatort episodes broadcasted so far. I would say the sum of a great story, acting performances by a creme de la creme-crew, movie directing by Wolfgang Petersen, locations, atmosphere and the film music. A significant contribution to the popularity of this episode is the smashing debut of actor Klaus Kinski's gorgeous and dashing daughter Nastassja as the young student Sina Wolf. Besides her ravishing look, the then 15 years old Nastassja is very natural and acts very professional, despite her young age. A crucial step in her career. For Your Love Only contains brief moments of innocent nudity (no exploitation). Today the film locations of For Your Love Only are a kind of pilgrimage, as this episode has for decades a 'cult' status. After the broadcast, a lot of (German) parents called their newborn daughter Sina or Nastassja by the way.

The story is about the 17 years old student Sina Wolf (Nastassja Kinski) who has a love affair with her high school teacher Helmut Fichte, age 32. One day Sina's classmate and boyfriend Michael Harms caught the couple intimate at a lake. The jealous Michael also wants to make love with Sina and blackmails her. In the mean time Michael tells his classmate Inge what he has seen. The sub-plot is, that Inge has bad school results and she blackmails her teacher Helmut Fichte to give her higher figures. The next afternoon Michael tries to rape Sina in the woods (as part of his blackmail) and during the rape she kills him with a stone. In a newspaper Sina had read an article about a sought rapist with a green jacket, so she frames him for the murder. Detective Finke is suspicious however. Will Sina get away with murder?

Because of her acting performance and her irresistible look, Nastassja Kinski had a lot of media attention (as well as the subject), but I like to mention actress Judy Winter also. She stood in the the shadow of Nastassja, understandable, but she has a lot of screen time too (more than I remember from first seeing in 1977) and performed her role as a high school teacher and woman of an adulterous husband very well. Maybe too well, as she understands his adultery; the only weakness in the script in my opinion. Unlike many other Tatort/Crime Scene episodes however, this time the cops are less prominent. I prefer that. Comparing this episode with the many other Tatort episodes I have seen in the past 4 decades, I still think this is one of the best, actually the best!

There is a full length, uncensored German language Youtube upload by the way, search: 'Tatort Reifezeugnis'; of course I recommend this DVD. In the past in Greece and in the US For Your Love Only was released on VHS; the latter censored from 108 to 90 minutes. Fortunately, since January 7, 2010, Reifezeugnis/For Your Love Only is available on DVD (German release), uncut(108 minutes) and a decent 4:3 full-colour print. Unfortunately, despite being Tatort's most popular episode and international theatrical release (like France and Turkey), only German subtitles are added. Maybe in the near future we may look forward to a Blu-ray release with subtitles in English language also. And perhaps with interviews with the director Wolfgang Petersen ('Das Boot', etc.), Nastassja Kinski and other members of the cast, as extra features. Disappointing are the extra features on this DVD: only brief moments of interviews with Wolfgang Petersen and Judy Winter plus some Tatort promo.

My ratings: Episode: 5/5; DVD (region 2): 4.5/5.

2.0 out of 5 stars The songs are great, however the CD transfer is not..., 9 Jun. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Complete Anthology (Audio CD)
I bought this anthology/4 CD with high expectations and was not disappointed with the quality of the music. The booklet and performance of all songs are great, but the transfer to CD is not! During the remastering proces the audio mid-range almost has disappeared, like all songs were recorded in a bathroom, and no audio depth at all (as on their 33 rpm LP's). Michelle and Mama Cass even sound like screaming bitches, very distorted. Council higher volumes.
A too much filtered, dead sound on all 4 discs. At least the audio quality is far, far away from what is possible with SACD for instance.
I compared the audio quality with their rather cheap 'California Dreamin'' DVD from 2005 also (on the same players), and the mid-range is back again and no distortion in the audio upper range.
Summary, I do'nt recommended this anthology if you like music with an analogue, natural sound.
(The used multi-players are the Denon DVD-e3930 and the OPPO BDP-95SE by the way.)

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent heist/neo-Noir, 22 Sept. 2011
This review is from: Payroll [DVD] (DVD)
After seeing other "heist Film-Noirs", like "Rififi" and "The Asphalt Jungle", I like "Payroll" aka "I promised to Pay" very much.
The stunning Françoise Prévost is an excellent-femme-fatale! Perfect casting. Allthough the image of the cover-art is NOT a scene from this movie. Probably a promo-shoot.

The (widescreen) DVD transfer is excellent too. No trailer however. To access the other European buyers, subtitels would have been appriciated, at least 'English for the hearing-impared'.

One questions remains, regarding the runtime: info DVD: 102 minutes; IMDB: UK 94 min., and Germany 105 min. Deleted scene(s)?

Recommended. My rating 4/5.

Backlash [DVD] [1956]
Backlash [DVD] [1956]
Dvd ~ Richard Widmark

4.0 out of 5 stars Above average Western!, 22 Sept. 2011
This review is from: Backlash [DVD] [1956] (DVD)
This Western was above expectation! 'Backlash' is certainly among the best: there is more plot, a lot of action scenes, drama, good acting, and realistic dealing with the plot's events than your likely to find in the usual Westerns, combined.

'Backlash' has an excellent cast and supporting roles too.
The extremely beautiful Donna Reed is very stunning. The love relationship between Richard Widmark and Donna Reed is well built.

Director John Sturges was at his best in the 50's: 'Gunfight at the OK Corral', 'Bad Day at Black Rock', 'Fort Bravo' and... 'Backlash'.

I enjoyed the great images like landscapes shot in widescreen Technicolour.
Look forward to a Blu-ray release.

Found 2 weaknesses: Donna Reed is always wearing beautiful clothing, despite the dusty, deserted surroundings and when Widmark tries to kill an Apache, this indian didn't scream to warn his tribe in the valley.

Nevertheless, 'Backlash' is a very entertaining and enjoyable production! My rating: 4/5.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fortunately LPCM 2.0 too., 19 Sept. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Fortunately the BD has LPCM 2.0 too as I still prefer analog stereo (2CH). On the cover on this re-release no 5.1 promo, great.

The video of this disc is very good, almost excellent.

Minor is the audio. Starting with track 7 the sound becomes louder and after some tracks again and again.

The bonus track is disappointing, the video as well as the audio: on the level of DVD.

Performance: I still hope that the music DVD 'C'Mon America' from 2003 will be released on BD too. Maybe with an improved editing. In this 2003 concert Sheryl has a lot of 'drive' and a better contact with the audience and her band. Compared with the present Chicago-2008 (studio) concert where Sheryl performes dimmed, more routine. But still a nice concert, recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's time for a Blu-ray release!, 19 Sept. 2011
To-day I watched the Sheryl Crow Blu-ray 'Live' from 2008.
However, I still prefer this 2003 concert. Hopefully we may look forward to a Blu-ray release in the near future!
Compared with the (Chicago) studio concert from 2008, where Sheryl looks dimmed and shows routine, in this 2003 concert Sheryl has a lot of 'drive'. Shhe looks very sexy and has a great contact with the audience and her band which boosts the atmosphere. And I like the setting. Very recommended!

PS
This (NTSC) music DVD has no region encoding.
