3.0 out of 5 stars Too much analysis-too little narrative, 26 Oct. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
All very deliberate but consequently distant.
I would imagine the freezing landers might have gotten some
Sleep had they been reading this over elaborated treatise.
Needed to follow the action more closely and refrain from inserting
ten pages of randomly interspersed dissection of motives at each
campaign milestone. Dull.

5.0 out of 5 stars Astonishing, 16 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
As an example of the triumph of human spirit over adversity, or simply
a reminder of how fortunate we are to be living in a peaceful Europe
this book is equally outstanding.
Excellently translated ,it has an immediacy that makes it gripping
and emotive. Parts of the narrative seem inconceivable, yet absolutely credible.
I defy anyone to be able to put it down.

2.0 out of 5 stars Reasonable Value- but dull., 14 Feb. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An undoubtedly thorough step by step account of the battle, but very difficult to engage
with the narrative. The only moments that rise above the academic treatise are the very
few personal insights from those who took part.
If you need facts, this is fine but there are many more imaginative and captivating
accounts of the inevitable demise of the Wehrmacht in East Prussia.

1.0 out of 5 stars Apalling Rubbish, 29 Oct. 2010
This garbage left me vitually speechless.
Dialogue was painful, and induced sporadic nausea
interspersed with loud guffaws.
The two potential saving graces were wasted, as the
landscape only appeared in fleeting glimpses and Vanessa
Redgrave tried in vain to deal with a risible script.
Suitable for lobotomy convalescents- otherwise avoid
at all costs.

1.0 out of 5 stars Useless Junk- Dont touch it!, 13 Feb. 2010
If you enjoy exploding ESE pods, ridiculuosly frothy crema and an unworkable
milk frother this is the machine for you.
I cant believe that any manufacturer would continue to sell such a hopeless
product.
(Did I mention the excessive noise, vibration and the cold coffee?)
Safe to say it's going back after 36 hours.

4.0 out of 5 stars Turin Shroud and calamine lotion??? Come off it..., 14 Nov. 2009
This review is from: The Fountain (Audio CD)
Well here we go again- another enigma.
In my humble 25 year fan's opinion there are only
three tracks on this album that I'll be listening
to in a few weeks time. And they're strange.
The title track is a stormer, full of emotion
and, at last, free of that abrasive nasal vocal
and cold chopping guitar that has begun to annoy me since
Siberia. There are definite echoes ( see, anyone can pun)
of What are you Going to do with your Life, if not a
completely borrowed middle eight, but it works magically.
The other two real good uns are Drivetime, which sounds a bit like
Chris Rea, but creeps up on you ( a bit like Chris Rea, and maybe
diahorrea) and the appallingly
titled "Idolness of gods". this was a potentially
top notch tearjerker which only just manages to
overcome the titular handicap. Wordplay is very
clever, but doesnt guarantee emotive effect ( especially
when you then need a crib sheet to remember how clever
you were on stage.
All in all the rest of the album is loud and in your face,
but at least the hope is that the softer ballads are on the
way back. This is what Mac does best, and however much Will
wants to be Tom Verlaine's pet antelope, a mellower approach
yields the real gems- Kiling Moon, Ocean Rain, Zimbo etc etc etc...
Still the best live band on the planet, mind.

It cant be so long since this album came out- either that or it has
reached the holy grail of rock "timelessness".
There is no other Bunnymen album that stands so much play- all the others
have jarring moments (or with Flowers, the odd good moment). I cant help
associating it with the melodic quality, still having the space created
by Pattinson's wide, easy bass riffs but keeping Will's Velvet inspired
guitar abrasion under control. No tortured antelopes here, just souls.
Rust is the band's finest moment, and Baby Rain was immense live.
Shame about the next one, though...

2.0 out of 5 stars Why?, 17 Jan. 2007
This review is from: Me I'm All Smiles (Audio CD)
Massively disappointed in this album, given that this band is capable of

peerless live performances packed with emotion, atmosphere and power.

This was a break-in tour for the new band, and they're not yet the

finished article here. Although no-one could match Pattinson & De Freitas,

they have got it more together recently.

The real question for me is why release stuff most of us already have,

(only better recorded and played). Mac has a dodgy throat and adds nothing

to the recorded versions- no doors, iggy or reed, which quite frankly

make the live shows

Love the band to bits, but why not give us a different set, extended

songs- all the things we go to see them for in the first place?
