In the tradition of Adge Cutler RIP. A really funny song with a hint of pathos. Reminds me of my first wife many years ago.

5.0 out of 5 stars New life to old tracks worth it even if you are not a big Quo fan, 28 Feb. 2015
Ok never been a Quo fan, never disliked them but have not been moved to buy an album, I might have seen them in Carlisle back I the late 70s but can't remember.
I listened to their unplugged concert on BBC iplayer and was blown away. Gave a new lease of life to songs which to me were old hat. They had good backing musicians including a guy who played the accordion Cajun style now that really rocked. Am just about to buy the albim.

5.0 out of 5 stars Multi purpose, 22 Feb. 2015

Adequate as a wok and non stick if proved properly, but really adds value as a multi purpose cooking vessel. Works well in the oven, just throw a load of chickens in and away you go.

Cleans easily in warm water, no need for soap. Dry off in a low oven for a few minutes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A 'must have' book, 8 April 2013
Honey from a Weed

This is one of the few food related books that you can buy any cook, celebrity or otherwise with out fearing they will take umbrage.

It's not a cook book in the traditional sense, it is much like Claudia Roden publishing on a budget, and compares very favourably to A New Book of Middle Eastern Food, or one of David's early works.

I always rate food related books by what I can carry in my head that adds greatly to my cooking armoury. If I find one tip per book then I consider that twenty quid well spent.

This book has at least two valuable tips that I can bring to mind not having picked up my copy for over a year.

Season late as far as salt and pepper is concerned. Certainly the pepper continues to carry a big aromatic punch instead of just background warmth.

When adding garlic, also add late but more importantly purée it with a little oil and salt. The salt helps to purée the garlic and adding it late and in liquid form adds a whole new layer to the flavour.

Fantastic 'must have' book just like Billy Bragg's Mermaid Avenue!

The Fabulous Baker Brothers
The Fabulous Baker Brothers
by Tom Herbert
Edition: Hardcover
Price: £6.95

3.0 out of 5 stars Sourdough, 21 Jan. 2013
Ok I have not read the book, but I did watch one episode as I wanted to see their take on sourdough. I will make two points.

Firstly the vast majority of yeast in the starter will be that which survives the flour milling process, so from that point of view use an organic flour which should be relatively pesticide free, white will do, other types of flour will give a different flavour.

The second point is an important safety issue. Yeast gives off a significant amount of carbon dioxide during the fermentation process. It is this that makes the bread rise.

Therefore if you use a Kilner jar and seal down the lid, you run the very real risk of the jar exploding, it is not a pressure proof container. In worst cases glass will fly across the room like shrapnel and can cause serious injury.

Use a Tupperware type container and leave the lid slightly loose.

I really rate this flour for bread making. I also use it to make Levian starter (sourdough) and it is fantastic. With the right amount of water to flour the dough is light and elastic, a pleasure to handle. I cannot recommend it too highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best thing out of Scotland ever (even allowing for the A1 and Mel Gibson)), 23 May 2012

A fantastic duo that can still make me laugh (Don't turn out like your mother), smile (lets get married) and cry (your childhood). This album is more of the same quality and mixture of emotions including unreasonable anger as I have a recording fault on track one so this copy will have to go back. I saw them live at The Junction in Cambridge in the early 90's terrific, not a lot more I can say really.

A Moment of War (The Autobiographical Trilogy Book 3)
A Moment of War (The Autobiographical Trilogy Book 3)

5.0 out of 5 stars deeper than it appears, 23 May 2012
I first read this book when it first came out and downloaded it from Kindle whilst on holiday in Spain this year and it compares well with 'The Real Band of Brothers'. With the benefit of hindsight we know that the Republican Cause was doomed from the word go. The Nationalists had a core of battle hardened brutal troops fresh from colonial wards in North Africa and the explicit support of the Fascists governments in Germany and Italy. The Republicans were a disorganised disparate coalition which spent much of the time infighting and could only buy limited support from the USSR. The icing on the cake was a British embargo on arms sales backed up by a naval blockade to prevent gun running. In return for this the British got Franco to stay out of WWII and kept control of Gibraltar.

Laurie Lee (an innocent abroad having spent his entire life in a remote Cotswold village) literally walks into this war; not even knowing how to join up, he spends his entire time one step ahead of Republican firing squads who believe his apparent stupidity and lack of guile is a cover for a master spy. His time in Spain is chaotic but he does get to kill a Nationalist soldier before going home, this sad moment buts the tin hat on the whole affair and gives an honest down to earth portrayal of Civil War a gastly affair with no real winners. Not many writers would have the honesty to portray their own ineptitude and irrelevance, well worth reading.

Spent ages wading through reviews on docking stations and would have spent much more had it appeared worth it. More than happy reasonable sound quality and easy controls. Have just ordered a second machine for another member of the family.
