1.0 out of 5 stars formulaic and lazy, 1 Feb. 2012
It's about time Clive Cussler packed it in. The formula has run its course and this book has contractual obligation written all over it. The tongue is now so far into the cheek that CC takes the names of British characters from the cast list of Corrie - Julie Goodyear - sorry all I could see was Bet Lynch in the Rovers! Another reviewer noted that Buckingham Palace was now on the Thames....Time to call it a day.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent value, 5 Nov. 2009
The idea of this Pen and Sword series is clearly to give general readers a good understanding of the battle or campaign backed up with a wide variety of contemporary photographs and in this Stalingrad - Victory on the Volga succceeeds admirably. The text is informative and detailed veering away from the oft-repeated 'laundry list' of division x did this and that unto division z sufficiently to give some interesting info' about the units and individuals concerned in this hellish maelstrom. Enjoyable and worth every penny but a simple map might have been useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to a little covered aspect of WW1, 24 April 2009
I knew only scant details about the tsarist army's activities during WW1 until I read this remarkable book! The text is straightforward for the non-military specialist and the maps are clear and easy to follow. But, wow, the photos are in a class of their own! So often text can be dry and almost dull but the choice of photos and the supporting captions are fabulous. I can't praise this book too much so will end here. If you have an interest in WW1 then this will add to and expand it. a worthy adition to anyone's military library.
