Well what turn up, with such a quick follow up after "Among the Leaves" I did not expect such a fresh sopund from Mark Kozeleck. As long time fan since his days with RHP this "project" with Jimmy Lavalle ( with whose work I have to confess I am not familiar) seems to have given Mark a real sense of enthusiasm in his work. This is very good album from start to finish with an excellent blend between the electronic musical sounds of Jimmy Lavalle and the superb vocals of Kozelek. The sound sort of reminds me of Blue Nile and later Matthew Ryan records. If you are a Kozelek or Jimmy Lavalle fan you will love this,if not it may take a few listens, highly recommended though. If you are new to Mark Kozelek start at Ghosts Of The Great Highway

5.0 out of 5 stars More Gourds, 10 April 2013
This review is from: Well After Awhile (MP3 Download)
Just discovered this excellent record and so pleased I am too, as a long term Gourds fan this is excellent so like the Gourds and yet so different, much lighter and happier but still the same. So if you like the Gourds then this is a must along with the soon to be released "Gulf Coast Museum". Great easy listening Austin Americana featuring Scrappy Judd Newcombe of the Gourds on vocals along with guests Ray Wylie Hubbard and Michael Fracasso to name but two.

What nice surprise a new reord from Hayden the first in 4 years after the excellent "Place Where We Lived" the Canadian songster returns with a great album, not a bad song on this CD. Unusualy for Hayden a bit more upbeat an album than is normal along with more electric guitar and yes even drums. A very happy and relaxed sound very easy to listen to several times over and over again definately one of his best efforts to date a must if you are a fan and a great place to start if you are new to his work. Massively underrated everywhere even in Canada. I only review a fraction of the records I buy so this has to be great and worth investing in you will not be disappointed trust me. There is even the sad Oh Memory at the close where he has nicked the melody of a Scottish folksong as an intro, it works believe me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Return to form, 25 Nov. 2012
After the relatively poor album "I Recall Standing As Though Nothing Could Fall" this is a startling return to form and more like his early work, gone are the annoying electronics and just great songs and vocals a must for Matthew Ryan fans just like "May Day" excellent!!!!

For the uninitated this is the fourth Album from the the Sumner Brothers and by far the most accessable, sure "In The Garage", In The Garage 2 are good records (available from [...] in the US)as is the aptly named "The Sumner Brothers" but they are only for fans like me who love very unpolished performances. This new LP "I'll Be There Tomorrow" is better produced and the songs seem to be more rounded, finshed as it were. So lovely bare voice and guitar one whole. Manely for fans of pure Americana like Black Swans, Baptist Generals and the new Albums from Will Johnson and Patterson Hood not bad at all.... so if you like this one, work backwards; but slowly as they are an aquired taste...... I love them (but not at 25 quid)

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant David Eugene Edwards, 13 Sept. 2012

What great new record form one of my all time favourite bands. So often in the past David Eugene Edwards new band Wovenhand have been very unlike his previous band 16 Horsepower, however here we have record which is more like them than any previous offering, that is not to say that this sounds like 16hp far from it it's just that this a more rocky guitar orientated record which to my mind is not a bad thing. The lyrics on most songs often have religous references Jehova, Elijah etc but this is rock music at it's very best. After several good records by Wovenhand this is outstanding in my book. If you like dark music like the Black Heart Procession, Swans and the like then you must get this, if Wovebhand are new to you, then this is the place to start and then spend a lot of time buying up their back catalogue along with that of 16hp

Nice album a bit different but a must if you like Bon Iver, Midlake and the like. I liked it on the first listen I just wonder if thats a good thing sometimes you get bored quickly if the music is too accessble, however the music on this album is so variable I doubt it.
So great atmospheric record and a great ine album

So one reviewer does not like Fiona being a bit different.. god forbid she turned out another voice at the Piano album there are plenty of those around. This is truely a bit of a experiment for an artist that tends to make very few records and she has obviously thought long and hard about it, so you are going to have to do a bit of that also, as it you would have to be a real musician to appreciate this record with just one listen. It takes a few goes but believe me it's certainly a grower. A must if you like a great voice and a good song. I would have to concede thought that if you have never listened to miss Apple before this is probably not the best place to start. When The Pawn...Tidal

4.0 out of 5 stars Shame about the price, 27 Jun. 2012
This review is from: Phanton Limb (Audio CD)
1st off the price of this Album is going to put some off taking a chance, thats a pity because this such a great debut record by a very tallented band. A slow growing LP with some really atmospheric tracks, essentially a late night or relaxing record with jangly guitars and droney voices, reminincent of The Black Angels, Nathaniel Ratecliff, James Vincent McMorrow and Gregory Alan Isacov which is no bad thing. So at least worth a listen and maybe a buy, but perhaps not at fifteen quid.

5.0 out of 5 stars American Indie, 3 Sept. 2011
This review is from: Rise Ye Sunken Ships (Audio CD)
What an excellent Album made by some of the former members of Pela very good American Indie indeed definately shades of Matthew Ryan in the voice. So lots of guitars, drums and angst smashing debut record much more to come no doubt, will probably be missed by most what shame.
