1.0 out of 5 stars Lazy cash-grabbing release, 24 Aug. 2015
This review is from: CD Singles 1986 - 2014 (Audio CD)
Nothing on here that you can't get for much cheaper than buying the album re-issues. Do that instead and save yourself the disappointment.

This singles box set inexplicably doesn't include the single mix of one of the singles (I Feel The Magic) rather lazily using the album version. A lot of the tracks that were on the album re-issues could have been added on but rather lazily were not. The aborted singles I Plead Insanity and Remember September are missing, even though there were tracks the record label could have used.

The one selling point of this album is actually ripped from YouTube. Save yourself the money here and just rip it yourself!

This is nothing more than a nice to look at box set that has been released to make collectors cough up £100 just to have a full set. Seriously, don't bother.

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost the perfect Belinda Carlisle collection, 11 Jun. 2014
This review is from: The Collection (Audio CD)
Belinda Carlisle has had a fair few Greatest Hits or budget compliations over the years but they have always missed out her IRS years (on the UK compilations) or her later years (Real onwards on U.S. compilations). Finally, we have a compilation that spans all her English studio albums with a couple of new tracks added on. The quality of the songs are great and serve to remind people what a force Carlisle was in the world of pop.

The collection of songs is slightly intriguing - the majority of the hits are present along with some minor hits (interestingly the 1991 remix of Vision Of You which hit #71 is on here rather than the original) and the minor hits of La Luna (#38) and Runaway Horses (#40) are favoured over higher charting hits such as Lay Down Your Arms (#27) and Love In The Key Of C (#20), though the former two are bigger fan favourites and regular staples of Belinda's live sets.

The main drawback/ sticking point with this compilation is that despite the songs, Belinda only had 7 UK Top 10 hits and one of them is notably missing - Always Breaking My Heart - which seems rather careless (even if it is widely known that Carlisle no longer likes the song), particularly as 19 tracks is a rather odd number for a compilation.

Despite that, this is probably the best compilation released for the casual fan - just go and download Always Breaking My Heart afterwards and manually stick it into the album!

4.0 out of 5 stars Almost the perfect package, 11 Jun. 2014
Belinda Carlisle has had a fair few Greatest Hits or budget compilation releases over the years but due to the politics of different labels owning different songs there has never been a definitive collection. Until now. CD1 and 2 cover all the hits (Heaven Is A Place On Earth, Leave A Light On, We Want The Same Thing, Circle In The Sand, In Too Deep, Live Your Life Be Free, the not quite hits (Lay Down Your Arms (making its first ever appearance on a Belinda compilation), All God's Children), the singles that were released only in the U.S. (I Feel The Magic, Band Of Gold, I Feel Free) and the intended hits that never made it past promotional release/ planned release (I Plead Insanity, A Prayer For Everyone, Valentine). Even a track from her 2007 French album Voila makes an appearance (ironically in English format! - I Still Love Him). The quality of the songs is undeniably great and makes you question why she doesn't continue to record. A minor niggle is that it is the album rather than single versions of In Too Deep and Always Breaking My Heart on this release (the version of 2013's Sun on here is also the full length version rather than the radio edit, but given this is the first time the full length version has been released in the UK we can overlook that!).

CD3 is a slightly disappointing mash of rarities and live tracks. The rarities include two soundtrack singles (Dancing In The City and I Won't Say (I'm In Love) and three other tracks - all which have been previously released but are hard to track down. Unfortunately there are no rare unreleased recordings that truly warrant the 'rarity' tag.The rest of the CD, a live recording from a Tokyo 2013 gig is largely filler given Carlisle released a live CD/DVD only last year containing almost all of these songs from a different gig. The only notable inclusion is Emotional Highway.

DVD1 contains all the videos (bar I Won't Say (I'm In Love) which could not be cleared due to it containing Disney excerpts) in an almost chronological order (another minor niggle in that Love In The Key Of C and California are the wrong way round). DVD2 contains an interesting mash of clips from BBC appearances (including unfortunately a lot of mimed performances) though it all seems a bit too mish mash for an Anthology.

The book itself is beautiful - presented in a 12"x12" hardback book with lots of large photos of Belinda. However, this is where the product really falls down in that it only covers imagery from Carlisle's albums that were owned by Demon Music Group at the time (Heaven On Earth, Runaway Horses, Live Your Life Be Free, Real and the A Place On Earth era). Unfortunately there is nothing from Belinda's early years (Belinda), later years (Voila) or any of the stunning photos from the A Woman And A Man era which is a real shame and makes this product seem a little rushed.

The price will out off casual fans (who would be better off with The Collection, but hardcore fans should have plenty to be happy about here. The real hardcore fans might be a little disappointed though.

Still, as previously stated, Carlisle's back catalogue is fantastic and it's great to hear it all in one collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yet another great read, 29 Aug. 2007
This review is from: A Mother's Sin (Hardcover)
Billed as a departure from her usual saga's 'A Mother's sin' is yet another captivating read from a fantastic author. The book is quite darker than her previous books (but not too dark) yet is reminiscent of her previous novel 'Just by chance' albeit set in a different period and packaged differently. Whether you are a fan of misery lit or not, you will be guaranteed to enjoy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must buy!, 14 Mar. 2004
This review is from: Against the Odds (Hardcover)
I bought this book for my mum for mothers day and was intruiged by the book, so I read it (sorry your presents second hand mum!). Although the new jackets do define the book more than yor usual rags n shawls saga cover, I was expecteing the usual predictable stuff.
And I must say that I am pleasantly surprised! Without giving anything away (as I know Lynda hates it when people do that on amazon), the story branched completely away from what I thought would happen, and the book is so well written that it keeps you intruiged into reading more.
I will definately be reading more Lynda Page in the future and highly recommend you to buy it!
