this is a great book for anyone who loves baking - there is a really varied selection of recipes to suit a variety of palates and occasions....and a lot of extra detail in the book that you dont always get in recipe books, e.g. spotlight on where to find the best places to sample cakes and pastries in different cities around the world. a very good purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars an essential addition to any martial artist's book shelf!, 29 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a great book and though it is not a huge volume, not a word is wasted - it is packed full of information that is useful to practitioners of any martial art. When I first read this book (and I have returned to it many times) I was already studying a sword art, but the book's appeal and usefulness is wider than that and I would recommend it to students of any discipline that requires discerning practice and integration of mind, body and energy to achieve mastery.

The writing style is very engaging - a good mix of anecdotes from author John Evans' 40 years of experience and knowledge, combined with clear and insightful explanations of all of the core components of sword technique and practice methods.

Besides the practical information on technique - which will be instructive to students of many different styles of martial arts - the two things I personally found most useful about this book are its exploration of correct mental attitude towards training in martial arts, and the guidance offered on effective forms of practice. One theme of the book is "shugendo"; the discipline of testing what is taught for oneself, to be able to truly understand and integrate it, rather than attempting to learn through merely accepting / imitating what is offered by the teacher. And in respect of practice - while the need for repetition is acknowledged - Evans explains very clearly how the skill of discerning self-observation and awareness at the minutest level of detail is ultimately what will make the difference between counterproductive hours of fruitless practice, and real progress.

5.0 out of 5 stars practical, informative and clearly explained, 17 April 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Having developed an interest in this subject quite recently via martial arts, I do not have a detailed working knowledge of Daoist theory or of the subject matter of this book. I found the content of the book to be well structured, taking the reader through each component of critical foundation theory and practice without assuming / requiring prior technical knowledge. The explanations provided are extremely clear and certainly this book will be very helpful and informative to anyone like myself who doesnt have much background knowledge in the subject.

I would also recommend the book to more experienced / knowledgeable practitioners of chinese medicine and related studies, due to its highly practical approach based on exercises designed to experience the energy system within the body. The book contains very good descriptions and illustrations to guide the reader through these exercises and gives some ideas as to what they can expect to observe for themselves and how to use their observations to diagnose and treat imbalances. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars great new translation of "The Spirit of the Sword", 29 Mar. 2013
This book is a very good translation of Nakamura Sensei's original text published in 1980 and is full of practical and detailed information covering a range of topics valuable to any practitioner of sword arts. The book begins with a discussion of the development of modern iaido and kendo and how the practice of each of these arts benefits from greater integration, along with the importance of incorporating tameshigiri - test cutting - to refine technique and learn the principles of correct grip, movement, and trajectory / blade angle, that keep practice of any style grounded in an understanding of what is actually required to produce an effective (and safe) cut with a sword.
The style of writing is very engaging, incorporating many anecdotes and personal stories, and explaining the results of the many researches into different aspects of sword technique that Nakamura Sensei carried out over his decades of experience as a teacher and swordsman.
In particular, I found the chapters dealing with topics of sword selection and maintenance and training with a tanrenbo to be full of very useful information, along with the chapters outlining the kata of Nakamura Sensei's school. These are illustrated with hundreds of photographs and are set out very clearly for the reader to follow. This book is essential reading for anyone practicing or interested in sword arts or martial arts more broadly.

5.0 out of 5 stars great quality reishi tea, 24 Oct. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
These are very good reishi tea bags and I recommend them - I have tried several different brands, and while these ones were not the most economical, they were definitely the best. Also, this seller delivered very promptly - all in all, a good purchase - thank you.
