Jesse James [DVD] [1939] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]

There is little doubt that the real life person of Jesse James was a more hard-edged and evil one than the way he is portrayed by Tyrone Power in this rather glossy and glamorized Western that details James's various exploits.
I understand that Hollywood couldn't make the leading character too mean or angry, otherwise the general public wouldn't be rooting for him, therefore not caring in particular with regards to his eventual fate.
Tyrone Power's relative inexperience as a dramatic actor is rather obvious to see, as he is no match for Henry Fonda, cast as brother Frank James, nor against famous character actor Henry Hull as the cantankerous but lovable local newspaper editor.
The action scenes are a little sparse at times but what there is is good enough. This one has a good story behind it, it is well paced, has a fine cast of seasoned supporting players but should have been filmed in black and white.

Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia (1974) [DVD]
Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia (1974) [DVD]
Dvd ~ Warren Oates

4.0 out of 5 stars Pure Peckinpah!, 13 Feb. 2015
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This may not get mentioned in the same breath of "The Wild Bunch," "Cross of Iron," "Pat Garratt and Billy the Kid," or "The Getaway" but taken on its own terms, "Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia" is a worthy addition to Sam Peckinpah's C.V. Apparently, this was one of the few movies in the film-maker's career where he maintained complete control over every aspect of the film, from pre-production to post-production.
The plot needed a little tightening up in places but there is an excellent performance from one of cinema's more under-rated actors Warren Oates - who should have had more leads in his career - as well as some good support, exciting and rather x-rated action scenes and the usual breath-taking Mexican photography.

3.0 out of 5 stars Effective lowkey Western., 13 Feb. 2015
More lowkey than the average Western, "Rawhide" is sustained by good direction, a fairly well written screenplay and Tyrone Power doing his usual as the dashing heroic lead. However, it is interesting to note that Power's character is a rather unlikely hero, given the fact that he is a worker for the Pony Express in this film and has little experience with using a firearm. That alone makes for interesting viewing.
In a nutshell: a handful of people who find themselves situated at this Post Office in the middle of a rather barren setting, are taken prisoner by a gang of desperadoes and it is left to the newly recruited Postal worker (Power) to save the day. Although there is plenty of on location photography, the set used for the Post Office is about the only one to be seen.
The movie has some effective and tense moments but the actor who was cast as the lead villain is a rather poor choice. He simply displays none of the menace that is required for a Western film: someone of Robert Ryan's calibre would have been far better. The cast members are limited but that is no bad thing.
This does make for enjoyable thoroughfare, but not to be confused with the classic Western series with a young Clint Eastwood.

In the Pit with Piper
In the Pit with Piper
by Robert Picarello
Edition: Mass Market Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars A decent read but this was lacking., 4 Sept. 2014
A decent read but then Roddy Piper's story becomes rather vague as he switches from one story to another without presenting a tight and co-hesive narrative. I felt a bit let down as the sections leading up to his experience at Wrestlemania 3 are terrific and full of humour as well as some of the stories of his days on the road.
The choice of photos is o.k but could have been selected and there could have been a lot more of them.

Ted DiBiase: The Million Dollar Man (WWE)
Ted DiBiase: The Million Dollar Man (WWE)
by Ted DiBiase
Edition: Paperback
Price: £12.99

3.0 out of 5 stars I have to admit to feeling somewhat disappointed. His time at the WWE -or the WWF ..., 4 Sept. 2014
I was looking forward to reading about one of the WWE's biggest talents: Ted DiBiase. With that unmistakable cackle and the catchphrase, "Everybody has a price for The Million Dollar Price," I was on tenderhooks as I began to read his life story.
However, I have to admit to feeling somewhat disappointed. His time at the WWE -or the WWF as it was then called - was rushed through and not covered in much detail. The period from 1987 to 1993 was a true highpoint in the wrestler's career and I would have loved to have seen more attention to detail with regards to this period.
I enjoyed reading about his early years, how he decided on a career in wrestling, his time at high school on the local football team and his days whilst working in the different regions for the different companies before Vince Machon changed everything.
The man himself comes across as being fairly likeable, if a bit ungracious on occasion. I was glad to read that DiBiase was able to lay his own issues to rest, via finding God, becoming an ordained minister and other things besides. The one thing I would have liked to have read though, would be how he feels about bloodsports and fox-hunting as he admits indulging in some things before he became religious.

Peter Sellers: A Film History
Peter Sellers: A Film History
by Michael Starr
Edition: Paperback
Price: £20.50

4.0 out of 5 stars A worthwhile book on Peter Sellers the actor and also the man., 17 May 2014
This book is an examination on nearly of all Peter Sellers's films, along with some interesting photos that compliment the text.
The section of the book that held my attention the most, was the interview that the author conducted with film-maker and well known Sellers collaborator, Blake Edwards. what is revealed can hardly be described as complimentary! The rather fraught and difficult working relationship between Edwards and Sellers came as not much of a surprise to me. Very insightful though.
This is a worthwhile book, especially for those who are dedicated sellers fans.

5.0 out of 5 stars A worthwhile tribute, containing many previously unheard material!, 17 May 2014
For those who wish to know more about Peter Sellers the comic actor, then this tribute on 2 c.ds will make for the perfect beginning. However, if you are looking for something that is a "warts and all" documentary, then you would be better off in reading a biography.
This 2 hour tribute, includes various radio recordings by Sellers and before his stardom was assured with the radio comedy "The Goon Show." It is fascinating to listen to his early radio from about 1948 to 1950 and how he bluffed his way into securing a job at the B.B.C by impersonating Kenneth Horne!
Also along the way, we learn how Peter Sellers honed his acting craft by learning how to act in front of a camera, his rise to stardom via classics like "The Ladykillers," "The Naked Truth," "The Mouse That Roared," "I'm Alright Jack," "Only Two Can Play" and then sealed with the original "Pink Panther" film and then "Dr. Strangelove."
His difficult period from 1965 to 1974 when his career stalled, isn't all that well detailed which is just as well, given the quality of some of the films!
There are various clips of his most famous productions that complement Sellers's talents. Listening to this radio tribute, makes me realise just what an original comic talent Peter Sellers was and still is, via his films on DVD/Blu Ray and C.D. long may his legacy continue!

3.0 out of 5 stars plodding, wordy and rather cheaply made., 9 April 2014
This review is from: The War Lord [DVD] (DVD)
This isn't a bad film by any means: Charlton Heston gives a good enough performance, Niall McGinnis and Maurice Evans are better, the direction is good and the script is better than I imagined.
The problem with "the war lord" for me, is that the narrative is rather a muddle and the budget could have been greatly improved. There are a few scenes that contain needless back projection and a rather obvious set that supposedly represents a location in a forest. The whole production should have been made on the scale of "El Cid" or "Ben Hur," then it would have made for a more satisfying viewing experience.
The picture and sound quality are excellent for the most part but there could have been some special features included for this dvd.

it is nothing short of refreshing to see a Bronson movie where there is an actual storyline, less graphic violence and no scenes of a sexual nature.
"the mechanic" adds up to a damn good film. there isn't much of a cast but that doesn't matter and there is a last minute twist to the tale that should leave many Bronson fans feeling happy.
this is my second favourite Bronson/winner collaboration after "death wish."

oh dear, more shoot 'em ups, car chases, some poor quality footage, non-existent story all add up to very familiar territory! I only recommend this one if you are a big fan of Bronson, otherwise it's best not to bother.
