The War Lord [DVD]
The War Lord [DVD]

3.0 out of 5 stars plodding, wordy and rather cheaply made., 9 April 2014
This review is from: The War Lord [DVD] (DVD)
This isn't a bad film by any means: Charlton Heston gives a good enough performance, Niall McGinnis and Maurice Evans are better, the direction is good and the script is better than I imagined.
The problem with "the war lord" for me, is that the narrative is rather a muddle and the budget could have been greatly improved. There are a few scenes that contain needless back projection and a rather obvious set that supposedly represents a location in a forest. The whole production should have been made on the scale of "El Cid" or "Ben Hur," then it would have made for a more satisfying viewing experience.
The picture and sound quality are excellent for the most part but there could have been some special features included for this dvd.

it is nothing short of refreshing to see a Bronson movie where there is an actual storyline, less graphic violence and no scenes of a sexual nature.
"the mechanic" adds up to a damn good film. there isn't much of a cast but that doesn't matter and there is a last minute twist to the tale that should leave many Bronson fans feeling happy.
this is my second favourite Bronson/winner collaboration after "death wish."

oh dear, more shoot 'em ups, car chases, some poor quality footage, non-existent story all add up to very familiar territory! I only recommend this one if you are a big fan of Bronson, otherwise it's best not to bother.

I was led to believe that this Bronson outing was near impossible to keep up with, owing to a rather muddled plot. whilst the story is a little hard to follow, this was much better than I thought it would be. there are some fine actors supporting Bronson, a fair measure of action and incident and some good photography.

I get the impression that as time goes by, old stone face grows more violent, if the body count in this "death wish" film is anything to go by!
there isn't a shred of originality or creativity to be found but it is marginally less sickening than the previous paul kersey outing.
I didn't know until recently that "death wish 3" was filmed in London for the most part and that most of the extras that had any dialogue were dubbed by American actors. it helps to save on the budget if nothing else.
at the age of about 63, Bronson was beginning to slow down but could still switch on the speed when called upon to do so.

not a good film by any means, the plot makes no sense, hardly anything happens, jill Ireland has little to do and Bronson himself can't save this turkey. best to avoid, unless you are a compleist like me.

for those who don't know, this western was issued cut on video but is now nearer its full length and thank god! this is one of Bronson's stronger westerns and contains plenty of action and excitement to keep fans glued until the end.

this is the film that put lee marvin on the map as far as i'm concerned! he plays his character as the hitman with evil relish and is menacing throughout. this film belongs to him and to director don siegel.

Valachi Papers [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]
Valachi Papers [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC]
Dvd ~ Charles Bronson

2.0 out of 5 stars untidy, too low budget and graphic., 4 April 2014

Charles Bronson actually does well as the main character in his later years but fails to convince as the character in his younger days. This is certainly no threat to "the godfather" movie, that one has more style, a better budget and better actors.
"The Valachi Papers" had promise and is tolerable in bits and pieces but the pace is uneven, the setting is not convincing or detailed enough and the violence is rather over the top.

a solid and watchable spy thriller but this needed a stronger plot and more action. Burt Lancaster and Paul Scofield take the acting honours, they work well together as they did previously in 1964's film, "The Train."
