not a great series but bruce lee makes it worth seeing!, 27 April 2013
i'm not a big fan of "the green hornet" series, it takes itself far too seriously when it should have been played for laughs, like the "batman" series. however, the latter programme wasn't blessed with bruce lee and his martial arts skills. he is the one that makes this compilation of episodes watchable, with his on-screen charisma and athletic abilities. as the opening and closing credits aren't included with these "green hornet" episodes, i was a bit confused when footage that isn't part of any of the storylines was included here and there. not a bad dvd but only worth watching and keeping if you are a bruce lee fan.

the man himself would be insulted., 27 April 2013
a right load of cheap rubbish, featuring yet another "bruce lee" fraud who isn't even capable of polishing the master's shoes. this joke for a film is meant to be a sequel to that other poorly made film from 1979(as if we need a sequel!) but i personally can't see the connection between the two. what doesn't help this film is seeing unused footage of the real bruce lee from "enter the dragon" and also footage from "fist of fury." it somehow makes it all worse and certainly not better. the fight scenes might be worth a look but that is about the only faintly positive comment i can make.

this brings back many memories!, 27 Mar 2013
i felt i had to wait for years to see this particular "spiderman" cartoon series surface on dvd and what a viewing pleasure it has been! this takes me back many years to the early 1980s when i would rush home from school to see my favourite "marvel" superhero. great days. all the best villains are here: the green goblin, dr. doom( in 6 episodes no less), doctor octopus, the sandman, kingpin and many others. i feel that the writers and animators have done a good job in re-creating the drama and action that is in the comics. the plots are fairly straightforward but that doesn't bother me in the slightest. the theme music is one of the best i've heard out of all the superhero cartoons i have seen. it is a catchy and well-written piece. the animation in "spiderman" is exactly the same as in the other series around the same year, "spiderman and his amazing friends." i'm guessing that some of the same production crew worked on both. as the previous review mentioned, i hope that the first 2 volumes of "spiderman" 1981 have been improved as the colour problem was fairly evident, sadly. however, it is a mere quibble and shalln't affect my enjoyment of this classic superhero cartoon series.

saved by some fantastic photos., 20 Mar 2013
this is a somewhat lightweight guide to "the avengers" series. for those who seek a more detailed book, i can recommend volumes penned by dave rogers and by mr. steed himself, patrick macnee. the actual information included in this volume is rather bare and minimal. there are some interesting bits and pieces about how the series developed, the various changes that were made throughout its history but i was hoping for something that would have more depth and detail. i was disappointed and annoyed to discover that a good number of episodes weren't chosen to be illustrated. for example, out of the 26 shows with original leading man ian hendry, only about 7 or 8 of them had photos included. not impressed with this at all. what does partially save this book from being a complete letdown, are the photos that have been selected. there must be at least 200 and for the most part, they are fantastic. i don't recognise most of them which is a bonus as it offers more of an insight into how the series was done and how it evolved. this was supposed to be a celebration of the 50th anniversary of "the avengers" but i just don't see much evidence of that here.

another marvellous collection!, 7 Mar 2013
i have so far been very impressed with this latest collection of "armchair theatre" episodes from the 1950s and 1960s. the writing and acting in particular are first class as we are witness to some of the finest acting talent this country has produced. i am referring to the following actors: patrick mcgoohan, donald pleasance, harry h. corbett, terry thomas, arthur lowe, anthony quayle, amongst others. inspite of the rather grainy footage and thin sets, it is the sense of excitement, intrigue and also suspense that has kept me rooted to my seat as i watch each plot unravel before my eyes and in my opinion, this is mainly what made british t.v such a force to be reckoned with in those early days, during when live broadcasts were made. i can particularly recommend the stories with anthony quayle, patrick mcgoohan and terry thomas. all are completely different in the way that they are written but each one working tremendously well in its own right. it has been a pleasure to be entertained by this classic t.v series of drama and character and i do hope that more will be released by "networkonair" in the future.

i can't wait for this one!, 7 Mar 2013
it always gives me a good feeling when "networkonair" go through the british t.v archives and release some of the classic programmes from yesteryear. i have read and heard good things about "the fraud squad." generally, popular opinion is that this series benefitted from good storylines, some fine writing and of course the usual standard of acting. it also has been said that this programme was a slightly different kind of police drama, completely unlike those of "callan," "sweeney" or "special branch." as with most of these dvd releases, there isn't anything in the way of special features but that doesn't bother me in the slightest. i have reasonably high hopes that this will turn out to be another watchable series from "networkonair."

this could have been worse, pretty fair comedy., 27 Feb 2013
when i first heard of this film, i wasn't sure how i'd react to seeing peter sellers looking and acting like a hippie. however, i think he did a pretty good job and it's his performance as the middle-aged, slightly dis-illusioned lawyer that makes "i love you alice b. toklas" memorable. his american accent is convincing and i like the way that his is a slightly soft dialect the early sections are probably the best as sellers struggles to accept the fact that his own brother is a member of the local hippie commune. the funeral scene is fun to watch, it's well done without resorting to bad taste. the latter moments contain the weaker scenes, sadly. after the sellers character has given in to his desires to become a fellow hippie, the film's plot and pace suddenly drag somewhat(no pun intended there). the climax leaves the whole thing slightly in mid air, as though the ending hadn't been properly constructed. when released in 1968, "i love you alice b. toklas" failed to make much of an impact at the box office but i think this is one of peter sellers's stronger comedies of the period. worth watching if you are a dedicated sellers fan.

not very thought-provoking but an interesting addition., 21 Feb 2013
this book on the comic actor peter sellers, shouldn't be regarded as a biography as the material here looks more into his career than his personal life. however, this does make for good reading. there are some brilliant photos, some of which i haven't seen in print before, there are some interesting bits of information about some of peter sellers's films but mainly his classic ones. the more obscure ones don't get much of a mention. i particularly enjoyed both the text and the photos about "the goon show" period. all members put on some pretty crazy and wacky looks for the camera! for those fans who seek a more in-depth study of the man behind the films, i recommend the immense biography by roger lewis and the more recent book entitled, "mr. strangelove."

a dud of a film for the great sellers to finish on., 21 Feb 2013
about the only remotely positive thing that can be said about this film, is that its star, peter sellers, died before it came out on general release. i'm not sure where to begin but here goes: there are almost no laughs to be found at any time, the supporting cast are completely wasted and given the most abysmal dialogue to act out. in addition, the "plot" makes no sense, the production values are about as cheap as they could get, the ending adds nothing to the film and sellers is looking tired and ill, which he had been for a few years at this time. the "behind-the-scenes" friction and complications sound more interesting than the film itself, what with sellers having fired the original director then trying his hand at it himself(with no success), causing mayhem and tension on the set and wanting his name removed from the credits, except that of actor. i only wanted to watch this mess of a production to have a last glimpse at one of my favourite comic actors and considering all the classics sellers made years previously, i felt a deep sense of disappointment throughout the viewing. the picture and sound quality is very good but that doesn't compensate i'm afraid.

great to see this one due out on dvd!, 30 Dec 2012
i have all the surviving episodes of "the reign of terror" on video, along with the soundtrack on c.d and i rate this story of being one of william hartnell's best. the sets, costumes, the writing and hartnell's performance are the highlights. as this dvd will contain animated episodes to compensate for the two missing ones, i reckon it will work very well. when i saw the animated episodes from the story "the invasion," i was impressed with the results and i hope to see more in the future with who stories like "the tenth planet," "the moonbase" and "the ice warriors." i expect there will be the usual generous special features with this dvd. i can't wait to buy this!
