These stories deservedly helped make his name , object lessons in how to write great Western stories, not a dud among them... and they're all here! Elmore Leonard fans perhaps not familiar with his forays into the genre really should not miss these.

4.0 out of 5 stars swivel chair, 11 Jun 2014

Item arrived very promptly with all parts in good order. Assembly instruction leaflet a bit sketchy and could be more helpful i.e. comprehensive. As it was , not being the handiest person in the world, I struggled but got there in the end! The ( eventually assembled) chair is very comfy and just what I wanted.

On Stalin and Stalinism
On Stalin and Stalinism
by Roy Medvedev
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars On Stalin and Stalinism, 8 Jun 2014

Fascinating stuff on the rise and rise of the old monster from by far the most clear sighted and impartial of the Russian ( Soviet) historians. Much of the material in this relatively short volume is covered at far greater length in Medvedev's masterly " Let History Judge." Both works are essential reading for students of modern ( not only Soviet) history.

Another terrific read from David Lodge, beautifully structured, full of insight, humour and superbly drawn characters. I was trying to think recently of which of his novels I have enjoyed most over the years. It's a tough call.

David Lodge brings it off again, this latest offering a sort of intimate biography of H G Wells with fictional bits mixed in here and there. Lodge must surely be regarded as a leading contender for Foremost Contemporary English novelist.

More excellent and inimitable crime writing from Leonard, he really did maintain an incredibly high standard and his recent death is a great loss to the genre.

First-rate Leonard, deft American crime writing at its best featuring the usual gallery of quirky characters including a second appearance by Cuban criminal Cundo Rey. But watch out for that treacherous sexy wife of his!

5.0 out of 5 stars City Lights, 3 May 2014

Great stuff from Waterhouse in two volumes, the usual lovely sharp writing and humour. I think I preferred "City Lights" in which we get to know the younger Waterhouse but both volumes are well worth a look.

Giant Book of Private Eye Stories
Giant Book of Private Eye Stories
by Raymond Chandler
Edition: Paperback

3.0 out of 5 stars Private Eye, 3 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Rather disappointing collection. Even the Chandler, Ross Macdonald and Ed McBain stories are nothing special and several of the others are poorly written. For hard core fans only.
