5.0 out of 5 stars Celluloid Heroes, 1 Feb 2014

This review is from: La Ronde [1950] [DVD] (DVD)
David Thomson's brilliant book 'A Biographical Dictionary of the Cinema' led me to this gem of a film. Anton Walbrook delights as the master of ceremonies and there is great support from other celluloid heroes like Danielle Darrieux. This is what cinema is all about. Max Ophuls at the top of his game on the carousel of dreams.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super, 21 Sep 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Classy 70's pop from now forgotten band Starbuck. Bruce Blackman writes and sings nearly all the songs in a witty, casual style not too disimilar to Michael Franks. Their signature tune 'Moonlight Feels Right' is the only reason I bought the cd but there are lots of other gems here like 'Sunset Eyes' 'Gimme a Break' and 'Got to Know'. Blackman knows how to write a tune. Super!

3.0 out of 5 stars A lot of padding out, 6 July 2012
One or two interesting bits but nothing new, as the last review said. There's a lot of padding out and a pointless section on Gerald Scarfe? What was his contribution to Wish You Were Here? I would have preferred an interview from the model standing upside down in Mono Lake on the postcard or the nude model behind the reg flag on the inside sleeve!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bright as a button!, 15 Jan 2012

Super light. I have three of them now. One is over a year old and is still performing well. Beware the light is not waterproof, so it needs to fixed under a porch or in a shed.

3.0 out of 5 stars Slide Guitars meet Indian Tablas!, 17 Jun 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: So Beautiful Or So What (Audio CD)
Slide Guitars and Indian Tablas embellish the country song 'Dazzling Blue', one of the highlights of a work that returns to the feel of his Millennium album You're The One. Lyrically it's an extension of the themes he pondered on his last album Surprise. The afterlife edges closer as he enters the endgame on planet earth. This album continues the high quality songwriting that we expect from Paul Simon. A lesser work than Surprise but essential for all fans.
What's next? Simon's reflections in heaven? Will technology be in place to download it? Or will he take a giant leap of unfaith?

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Dylan on Blu-Ray, 20 April 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
One of the films of the noughties and easily the best Dylan on dvd or blu-ray. The amazon review says all you need to know but I'll just add that there are some wonderful cover versions in here. Calexico's Goin' to Aculpulco is my highlight. Hanes plays it cool by choosing the less obvious Dylan. Brilliant!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Christmas Treat, 29 Sep 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Where would Christmas be without MR James? To be listened on a winter's night, preferably before Christmas with the tree lights on and a Baileys Irish Cream. The Michael Hordern readings are the best but as they are still unavailable on CD this is the next best thing.
The stories are Canon Alberic's Scrapbook, Lost Hearts, The Mezzotint, The Ash Tree, Number 13, Count Magnus, Whistle and I'll Come To You and The Treasure of Abbot Thomas. Read by David Timson with two by Stephen Critchlow. There are embellishes of classical music now and again but it doesn't intrude on the atmosphere.

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy Les Fleurs. Buy this one!, 10 Sep 2010

The best of Minnie is all here. Perfect Angel was her big breakthrough but Adventures in Paradise is her masterstroke. On the latter she enlists members of The Crusaders and a harpist to create a classy Soul/Jazz classic. We love you Minnie.

1.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Poor Sound, 19 July 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Pal Joey (OST) (Audio CD)
The very best of Rodgers & Hart but the sound quality is extremely poor and hinders your enjoyment of the cd. Regarding the soundtrack itself Sinatra's more swinging version of 'I could write a book' as heard in the film has been replaced by an inferior ballad.

5.0 out of 5 stars The worst band ever to play in Cornwall, apparently., 10 May 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Awesome book. You can follow the history of the band through their gigs and recording sessions, from the local pubs all the way to Live 8. Meticulously researched from a true fan in Glenn Povey. An interesting observation is that before Dark Side of the Moon they were gigging constantly in the UK. Afterwards they hardly played in the UK again. Just the odd Arena gig to promote an album release. The articles from the local press on the gigs are fascinating too. One particular gig in Redruth in 1967 prompted one member of the audience to write to the Melody Maker and warn potential goers not to bother- 'The worst band ever to play in Cornwall! ' ;-) Unputdownable.
