5.0 out of 5 stars THIS BLU RAY IS THE DEFINITIVE VERSION TO OWN, 6 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Don't waste your cash on any other version. This is the one to buy and own. Don't worry if it says its locked region A. It isn't it's region free and will play happily on UK Blu Ray machines. What a fantastically rich and detailed picture....presented in full Technirama scope ratio with DTS HD Master Surround Sound. Wonderful songs and brilliant lead performances by Rosilind Russell and Natalie Wood...and probably cheaper to buy than the awful dull lackluster 4:3 pan and scan rubbish UK DVD. RECOMMENDED

4.0 out of 5 stars UNDERATED HITCHCOCK GEM GETS A REASONABLY GOOD BLU RAY OUTING, 5 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Underated but nevertheless highly watchable and enjoyable Hitchcock offering. Okay so Julie Andrews is no Tippi Hendren or Grace Kelly, but she is a damn fine actress who doesn't need to break into song to get by in the acting stakes.
A solid blu ray release. The opening credits are quite grainy (but in a filmic way so not as bad on the eye as the opening credits of Mary Poppins on blu ray and the 3D Dial M For Murder) but once the action switches to Coppenhagen. the picture bursts into blu ray gold. Colours are deep and rich and quite sharp. The sound is DTS Master HD 2.0 Mono (but very full bodied with good base) Recommended if you like Hitchcock movies

5.0 out of 5 stars 5 STAR RMASTER ON BLU RAY FOR A WONDERFUL MOVIE, 28 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
just received the blu ray from the states. IT IS WONDERFUL! Amazingly sharp (with slight film grain - but it doesn't warrent any worry as the picture quality (in full cinemascope 21:9 / 2:35:1) remains excellent with deep rich colour that makes the film look as you remember seeing it in the cinema. The sound is DTS HD Master 5.1 and is tonally rich and full bodied with excellent use made of the surrounds. RECOMMENDED for all lovers of this film. Dont be put off that it's an American disc and rated as LOCKED REGION A - IT ISN'T - IT WILL PLAY ON UK BLU RAY PLAYERS! With any film go to Blu Ray.com site and type in the film you wish to purchase and it will tell you if it has region B (UK) compatibility. We do that now, and have since ordered blu rays of "Gypsy", "Lost Horizon", "Jason and the Argonauts"

Oh the love that has gone into this Blu Ray is evident. The depth of colour, sharpness, detail and clarity are a thing of beauty (like the movie itself)..The sound is totally evokative and full of depth with all speakers getting a good work out with effects and Jerry Goldsmith's haunting fairytale score (probably one of his best) swirls about you in full 5.1. Tom Cruise is ok, Mia Sara (in her first film) is amazing....whatever has happened to her in recent years? And Tim Curry (well Frank N Furter meats The Devil!) is good camp fun! If you love this movie (and the director's cut on this disc is over half an hour longer, so the story is better explained) this is the version to buy

Great fun movie adaptation of the French farce "La Cage Aux Folles" Brilliantly cast and acted. Nathan Lane is wonderful. Blu Ray looks better than the standard DVD, In the main, very sharp and good colour hue but on occassion does look a tad grainy. Sound is very good DTS HD and the surrounds get a good work out during the club scenes.

This is one of my favourite horror movies (I have fond memories of sneaking in to see it as a 15 yr old when it was certified as X) and have owned it on many formats, from VHS through to the last Anchor Bay 2 disc version. I won't bore with a plot synopsis as those looking to buy will surely know it. This blu ray version does contain a jaw dropping print of the movie that is very sharp and detailed with a depth of colour that literally shines. One is able to see so much more than was visible in previous versions/formats. Inside the coven/dance acadamy, you see for the first time that the walls are not just painted blue, but papered with vivid peacock blue velvet with embossing. There are however two niggles - hence the deduction of 1 mark for the disc. First in a few scenes, the colour pallette goes a bit AWOL especially in the scenes outside the acadamy that houses the witches' coven. The exterior of the building has always been painted a deep red (Dario purists please note pun!) but on the blu ray the building takes on a pink hue. This occurrs a few times but is forgiven by the rest of the picture which is so very good. However it could be that this is an accurate mastering of the original colour and it was previous versions that were wrong as dvd manufacturers changed the colour to red thinking this was what was needed. the rest of the colours are so vivid and accurate, I feel sure this is the case. Especially as the coven/acadamy is painted a deep red colour in the scene when Jessica Harper arrives for the first time...AT NIGHT (so no bright sunlight to diffuse the colour)> Second, the DTS 5.1 soundtrack which though it makes good use of the surrounds and is loud and pulsing, does not come close to the awsome sound featured on Anchor Bay's 2 disc DVD. That had a DTS 6.1 and Dolby Digital EX soundtrack which literally threw the viewer into a whirlwind of sound as the music and effects bounced from one speaker to another. However if you are lucky to have an amp that has 7.1 or 9.2 surround it is possible to boost the surround effect to make it more engulfing. Apart from that, this is a good buy and for those who like Argento's movies, this is now the definitive and best version of the movie available ......for now till a 4K version comes out in the next 5 years and we all scrabble to re-buy our large collections!

4.0 out of 5 stars VERY CLEVER DEVICE, 11 Mar 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The unit arrived within two days (very impressed by that) and was simple to connect. The HDMI goes into the AUX on front of the
9.2 Surround Amp whilst connecting the phone to the HDMI by way of this little "gizmo" (don't forget to connect your mobile charger to it too). Now you can watch movies and use the mobile's ipod on your big screen TV..(we were watching on a 65" 1080p TV) and listen through your surround amp. I watched "Frozen", "Gravity" "Saving Mr Banks" and "12 Years A Slave". The picture is well formatted switching from cinemascope, 16:9 or 4:3 depending on the movie. Although not as sharp as full 1080p HD it certainly is as good as the very best standard DVD or 720p HD...The sound outputs in 5,1 (or 7.1 or even 9.2 depending on your receivers capabilities). Overall we are very impressed for something that only cost 6. If you have 'sky go' - this is not supported by HDMI so won't work. But if you have sky go then you'll have normal Sky HD service so won't need to play back from your mobile anyway

5.0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST 3D BLU RAYS PRODUCED, 23 Feb 2014
Who would have thought that a 3D conversion could look like this? One would never believe it hadn't been shot originally in this process. The depth and layering of the action is jaw droppingly good and there is quite a bit of "in your face" action as things pop out from the screen too. Also the sound is amazing. Remastered in 7.1 DTS HD. The sounds bounce from side to rear to fromt speakers giving an enveloping sound. Maybe in the future we will see more classic movies given this treatment. The 1938 classic "Wizard of Oz" is on it's way, having been released in America already in IMAX 3D! ......so how about some of the 70's disaster movies? "Towering Inferno", "Earthquake", Jaws" and "Rollercoaster" which would all look pretty darn good in this format.

4.0 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL STREISAND, 23 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An excellent remastering of a wonderful musical. Picture is sharp (for the most part although there are a few soft focus close ups of 'la streisand') and rich warm colour. The sound is 5.0 DTS Master but this can be increased to 7.1 or 9.2 surround if you have the necessary extra channels on your home cinema amp). Definately the best version/format of this movie. The remastering is quite obvious (though not in the same class as the Blu Ray remastering of "Hello Dolly" or "Ten Commandmends" - both of which take the top prize)

5.0 out of 5 stars OMG - NOW THIS IS WHAT I CALL BLU RAY!, 23 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Where do I Begin. This has to be one of the most sumptuous blu ray discs ever produced...and a lesson to other studios of how a movie should look and sound when released on the Blu ray format. The sharpness of the picture (with absolutely NO digital artefacts or halo images) and the rich colour palette makes you realise how wonderful blu rays should look. The 5.1 DTS Master sound is wonderful too (especially if one has an amplifier that is capable of outputting the sound in 7.1 or 9.2 surround). We all know the story so there's no need to go into that suffice to say watching in this format is like seeing the film for the first time. The only downside is that the picture is SO BLOODY GOOD that it is obvious that over 70% of the film featured the cast in process shots (as there was no CGI back in the 50's even though the movie won the oscar for best special effects)that is very very obvious. This is especially true of the parting of the red sea. However the disc is a wonder to behold Buy a copy ....it's money well spent.
