REVISED REVIEW

I wrote a review here in late 2012 praising the book's content (which is great) and criticising the layout / typography of the kindle version, which was truly dreadful. That kindle version has now been removed from sale and replaced by a 'print replica' version, which is simply beautiful. I'm now reading the book again, and enjoying it even more.

The only downside is that it can't be viewed on a regular kindle (needs iPad / computer), but that display probably couldn't do it justice anyway.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent bit of kit, 12 Jan. 2008
It's a shame the pictures Amazon have of this don't show it switched on, because the display is great. You can get 1:50k and 1:25k Ordnance Survey maps, which look fantastic.

The unit is solidly constructed, the software is pretty easy to use, the battery life is very good.
I'm extremely happy with mine, which I've used both for walking and cycling. Highly recommended!

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen
Salmon Fishing in the Yemen

2.0 out of 5 stars A good idea, ruined by an obsession with political spin, 6 Mar. 2007
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
The central premise of this book is amusing, and at times inspiring. The author's genuine love of salmon fishing and the countryside is vividly expressed. He may even have convinced me not to eat farmed salmon with a heart-rending depiction of a visit to a salmon farm. By far the best parts are extracts from the jornal of the diffident scientist who gets carried away by the romanticism and ambition of the Yemen project. However, the author ambitiously introduces several other narrative voices, which he largely fails to make distinct and believable. The book would I think have been better without this structural cleverness.

But it is when the author strays from the territory he clearly knows so well that this book really falls flat. The attempt to turn a whimsical fancy into a commentary on spin and the practice of government-by-headlines is perhaps understandable in commercial terms, but he has little that is interesting or original to say about this. All of the political characters are crude caricatures, and their interactions are not remotely believable. Much of this part of the book could have been improved by a little more research, or a diligent editor (for example the woodenness of the "interrogation" scenes towards the end), but the central problem is that the author deserts any attempt at plot or characterisation.

More Killing Defence at Bridge (MASTER BRIDGE)
More Killing Defence at Bridge (MASTER BRIDGE)
by Hugh Kelsey
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars Most instructive, 30 Aug. 2004
In the same style as "Killing Defence", this book explains good defensive technique and then illustrates it with many example deals, most of which can be tackled as problems. The central themes are discarding, and creating/removing options for declarer. The hands are almost all quite difficult, and some are extremely tricky. The overall quality of the deals and of the writing is very high.

Peace (FANTASY MASTERWORKS)
Peace (FANTASY MASTERWORKS)
by Gene Wolfe
Edition: Paperback

5.0 out of 5 stars His finest self-contained work, 30 Aug. 2004
In his usual style, Gene Wolfe doesn't make anything very explicit, but gradually builds a progressive sense of wrongness until you must start reading again and re-examine everything that has gone before. This is a very intimate novel, with very few characters, and a very small range of locations (or apparent locations), all of them convincingly evoked as partially remembered by a dying man.
