5.0 out of 5 stars Tonerider Pure Vintage Pickups, 1 Dec 2012
These are some of the best quality replacement stratocaster pickups I have fitted, for the money they are outstanding value, the construction is to vintage type requirements with fibre bobbins, waxed cloth covered output wires, I have fitted 5 sets of Toneriders to stratocasters I am building or upgrading, the sound is true vintage, powerful without being too shrill, I highly recommend this make of pickups!! These are probably the best kept secret in pickup upgrades!

Tonerider pickups are amazing value for money, (and I believe are even installed in Fender Squier Classic Vibe Stratocasters I have read on the internet.) If you have a nice stratocaster which sounds dull, these might be the fix you are looking for.

I recently purchased a used 2005 Mexican Fender Stratocaster in Fiesta Red which sounded ok but as I like Surf music and the Shadows music, decided to upgrade the standard pickups to Toneriders to try and get that vintage sound.

The pickups are nicely made and I believe to the quality of 57 reissue Fender ones, Toneriders having Forbon fibre bobins, proper wire and alnico in the magnets, the output wires are waxed cloth covered which is also used on the 57 reissue pickups.

One thing, these pickups in your hand feel 'heavy' as opposed to some which feel 'light' i.e cheap budget ones.

Installation was easy and the stiff wires solder up well, the wires are meaty not like some of the 'fusewire' type wires on cheap pickups.

The acid test is of course plugged in, so once I had reassembled the guitar, I adjusted the pickups approximately and tuned up, then played to a set of backing tracks and readjusted pickup height to suit the sound I wanted.

The verdict was - amazing - lovely vintage tone and sound, they give you that great stratocaster sound without being weak, they are great for Shadows and Ventures style music. Rythm playing sounds good too, you get clean articulation between strings when picking, all in all these are superb value for money and probably the best kept secret in pickup upgrades!

If you are looking for a nice quality pickup for a decent quality guitar, you won't go wrong with these, if you desire a bit higher output for your guitar, try the City Limits set, these are hotter wound (9.5k bridge!!).

So to the basics -

Value for money - Great

Sound - Great

Build quality - Great

I have bought 5 sets of Toneriders for guitars I am building or upgrading. I guess this shows how much I like them!

Highly recommended!!

Maintaining the Breed, The Saga of MG Racing Cars
Maintaining the Breed, The Saga of MG Racing Cars

For anyone who is interested in the classic MG cars of the 30's to the MGA, this will be right up your street.

There are perhaps about 4 classic MG books you must own, Tuning and Maintenance of MG Cars by Phillip Smith, an MG experience by Dick Jacobs, the MG bible as it is referred to by Blower and this book by John Thornley.

Maintaining the breed explores each of the classic models from the early small scale production cars such as the 14/40 Morris Cowley derived cars through to the 18/80 and to the M type, which came from the Morris Minor of 1928. The following cars from J types evolving up to the MG T series and the MGA are also discussed.

There is a lot of technical detail including camshaft and valve timing data, XPAG tuning information, supercharging information and many pages of annecdotes from the races that John Thornley attended or writes authorititively about. Indeed, many snippets of information about the races of the time such as at Brooklands, the Isle of Man etc are well covered.

There are a number of line drawings and some rare photographs of cars like the Q type, K3 and R type in rolling chassis form, ideal for the restorer and enthusiast alike. Although the photographs are not over plentiful, the quality is what counts. It is a shame that there is no index to the book, which is a small detail, but more than compensated by the valuable information the book contains.

I have been involved with classic MG cars for over 30 years and learned some 'new old' things from this book!

I would recommend that you buy the other books I have mentioned in addition to this one, they really are great, the Dick Jacobs one especially is a very informative book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bartitsu / Baritsu self defence as used by Sherlock Holmes, 31 Oct 2012
I have seen the illustrations for Bartitsu also known as Baritsu and it is a very useful method of self defence.

Part of the technique draws on Far Eastern martial arts moves and the Baritsu method was tailored for the Victorian / Edwardian Gentleman about town (although not by Gieves and Hawkes the upmarket outfitters!) to utilise the tools a gentleman of the time had to hand, i.e. a walking stick, umbrella or bicycle!

A great piece of nostalgia but also worth a look as you may just one day have to use one of the moves in the book and the book will have proven to have been a wise investment.

Fair warning to Cads and Bounders everywhere!

These are a good set of earplugs, they do cut the ear damaging attack and volume from sound signals, which whilst leaving what you hear slightly quieter, at least your ears are not being damaged!

I bought these to use with a 10 piece swing band I practice with as they often want me to turn up the guitar amplifier which I am right next to, so these are saving my ears!

Crime Story - Series Two Boxset [DVD]
Crime Story - Series Two Boxset [DVD]
Dvd ~ Dennis Farina

5.0 out of 5 stars Crime Story Season 2, 28 Oct 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Coming from Michael Mann, who would also make the groundbreaking Miami Vice TV Series, Crime Story takes a trip back to the early 1960's and the rise of fictional Chicago Mobster Ray Luca from Penny Annie stickup merchant to a major organised player. Season 2 moves from Chicago into Las Vegas.

The series is dressed in the 1960's theme very well with the right cars, fashions and set dressings. The acting is very good too, watch out for guest stars in both of these series such as Debbie Harry and Gary Sinise and others.

Really good screen action, both in the home lives of the actors on screen and the Police and Hoods action too.

Highly recommend this box set and also Series 1!

I saw this on ITV in the 1980's but as far as I know it was never repeated on TV again, I may be wrong but I certainly never saw it again, so was very pleased to be able to get the box set of series 1 and 2

Sabres Over Mig Alley: The F-86 and the Battle for Air Superiority in Korea
Sabres Over Mig Alley: The F-86 and the Battle for Air Superiority in Korea
by Kenneth P. Werrell
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Sabres over Mig Alley, 28 Oct 2012

The US North American F - 86 Sabre jet was the most effective jet fighter of the Korean War, not as fast as the Mig 15, it's Soviet rival, the Sabre when used to it's limits managed to acheive a kill ratio of 7-1 or greater. A case of saying, Do the math!

The book is packed with a wealth of information and although not as informal as Officers in Flight Suits which I have also read and highly reccommend, it is well researched and written.

I have long been interested in the Korean War as the first modern war, the first war where Jet on Jet combat took place and also the first war where Nuclear weapons were brought to the table but thankfully not used (Nuclear weapons were despatched to Okinawa in readiness for use at one stage).

Mig Alley was the Jet Pilot's playground where the Sabres and Migs dogfighted, and killed. This was the area right on the Yalu river where just on the other side of the river at places like Antung, the MIGs were based. The MIGs had the advantage of full tanks and nearby bases, the Sabres had to lug drop tanks from 200 miles back and then go into fight the MIGs.

Often Sabres would run out of fuel and have to glide back to base, or head out to sea or eject.

A good read!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Seven Ups, 28 Oct 2012

This review is from: The Seven Ups [DVD] (DVD)
With elements of the French Connection and Bullitt films, the Seven Ups is a good standalone product of its own.

Bill Medley, the stunt driver from the Bullitt car chase has a speaking role in this film, Roy Scheider is a good lead too. The real location scenes from New York are really worth looking at, some great places, from grimy back streets to swanky apartments.

There is some violence but this is a high power early 1970's film and the Police are dealing with the top hard criminals here, the criminals have no fear about killing people. Keep an eye out for Ken Kercheval, later to star in Dallas in a role in the film.

An enjoyable film and you'll take to it if you're into Police dramas.
