3.0 out of 5 stars There are better alternatives, 16 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Top pianists use the pedal with much greater skill and care than the rest of us, yet we don't spend nearly as much time trying to develop our pedal technique as everything else. Armed with that thought I bought two books on pedaling. I recommend the other one. There is nothing really wrong with this. I just didn't find it very helpful. The writing is extremely archaic and pedantic but that's a minor frustration. The pianist's guide to pedaling by Joseph Banowetz is a much better book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Serious exercises for serious pianists, 16 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
It starts with a short essay by the author in which he says most piano exercises are a waste of time - you would be better off making sure you practise in an effective way and do it on pieces you want to play. He recommends studies by Cramer and Bertini for beginners and, later, a selection from Clementi's gradus. Everything else he says, with specific reference to Czerny, is superfluous.

The exercises themselves are very awkward. He has spent hours concocting every possible awkward combination of finger movements a pianist might need and distilling them into 42 ruthless pages. Unlike many piano exercises, it does not sound like a piece of boring piano music - it doesn't sound like music at all. It sounds like an exercise. if you suggested he put in a few chords or accompaniment to make it sound more interesting, I am sure he would be appalled (Perhaps this is why he doesn't like Czerny).

I agree with him. I have used Czerny, Hanon and Joseffy according to the taste of different teachers and quickly felt I was better off developing my technique on Beethoven. I don't promise I am going to spend a lot of time on these but if I do any exercises these are the ones I will do. They are a serious workout. Be careful you don't injure yourself though.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my favourite Indie Games, 15 April 2014
Delightful Indie game showing that simple atmospheric graphics can be a pleasure to play. The puzzles are sometimes hard but rarely annoying. The game has a creepy feel which I found part of the fun but if you don't like creepy atmosphere and a bit of gore you won't like it.

This listing is for the Special Edition. You can buy the game itself on Steam for about 3

No Country for Old Men
No Country for Old Men

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable in a masochistic sort of way (no spoilers), 15 April 2014
This review is from: No Country for Old Men (Paperback)
This is my fourth Cormac McCarthy novel. I thought the others were bleak but this required a very strong stomach, not just because it contains a lot of blood. I won't spoil the suspense by saying more. If your stomach is strong enough just read it. I enjoyed every page, in a masochistic sort of way.

I give it 5 stars because its is well written and shocking without being sensationalist but, on balance, I preferred Outer Dark and The Road. These are less interesting stories but more complete and coherent studies of the dark side of human nature. No Country for Old Men is a mixture of thriller / detective story, brutal gore, and a bit of philosophy about violence and evil.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful study planner, 15 April 2014
This is attractively designed with plenty of space to set out study tasks and timescales. It is a good way to help disorganised students control their work. Given how unpleasant this task is I think it is worth paying the high price for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Interesting without being unreasonably long or difficult, 15 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I got this for the Game of Thrones fans in my family and played it with them. It is quite complicated and took a bit of effort to learn and a long evening to play, but we successfully completed our game and everyone enjoyed it enough to come back and play again several times.

The game has attractive artwork and several interesting playing features, such as competing for positions of influence which affect the game in different ways and placing concealed bids to see who will take the punishments of fate. The interventions of fate are brutal enough to keep the game open but not so brutal as to ruin it.

It is an expensive game and I wonder how much of the price has gone to the TV show's marketing department.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good introductory textbook covering a wide range of linguistic topics in reasonable depth, 15 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I found this thorough, clear and above all very logical and scientific. Despite this it does not pave the way to computational linguistics. If you are thinking of heading in that direction you would do better to get Jurafsky & Martin

5.0 out of 5 stars Good basic phone, 14 April 2014

There is a lot to be said for a cheap simple phone that is reliable and doesn't make you pay for a lot of features you don't want. If that is what you want, this is a good choice.
