Yasukuni Swords: Rare Weapons of Wartime Japan

Edition: Hardcover

3.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book...but is it worth 165?, 17 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I can't really add anything to the other reviews of the content of the book but I will say the pages are not glossy although the images are very good and clear. Is it worth 165? I don't think so, personally, but this is a very subjective.

Cat out of Hell
Cat out of Hell
by Lynne Truss
Edition: Hardcover
Price: 6.99

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointingly predictable, 1 May 2014
This review is from: Cat out of Hell (Hardcover)
Having heard an interview with the authoress on Radio5 this sounded like it might be an enjoyable read especially since I rarely read novels as I often find them a little 'obvious'. Unfortunately, this novel met that very expectation and the little clues and points that the plot would later revolve around could've been telegraphed by Samuel Morse himself! It would be an excellent book for a young teenager perhaps but the premise of using cats in place of some other supernatural malevolent being was, for me, just....too obvious. It was beautifully punctuated though (unlike this review).

5.0 out of 5 stars One encounter, one opportunity...., 23 April 2014
I'm pretty sure I own the scroll shown here (having compared all the tiny details) and Ayako san did indeed create this for me an number of years ago. It's absolutely beautiful and people always comment upon it and discuss its meaning ('one encounter, one opportunity'). The quality of the materials is exceptional and the calligraphy itself is wonderfully bold and vibrant.

I wouldn't hesitate in recommending Ayako san's work as it will add a little subtle sophistication to any room in which her work is hung.

5.0 out of 5 stars An incredible fragrance...at a price!, 13 Mar 2014
This isn't cheap fragrance for the average person and I certainly can't afford to wear Oud everyday, but when I do, I unceasingly receive positive comments on its rich, complex and somehow refreshing fragrance. I won't try and describe it as that's impossible but what I can say is that it manages to oxymoronically be dense and classic but light and contemporary at the same time. It doesn't lose it's power throughout the day but it does evolve and the citrus notes seem to be the ones that linger the longest. The other delightful aspect is that you are highly unlikely to come across anyone else wearing it (?the male equivalent of someone else wearing the same outfit as you?) as it's a bit more exclusive that the usual colognes in the 40-80 price range-the range the inhabitants of most of our fragrance cabinet's contents occupy (I don't have a fragrance cabinet by the way, but I might look for one now...constructed from diamond or something).

So treat yourself, you work hard, and feel like a sophisticated man about town by wearing Oud (driving a Maserati helps with the illusion too),

4.0 out of 5 stars Nothing Special, 21 Feb 2014

It's exactly the same colour as the ink in a Uni-Ball Eye UB157 'light blue' (Mitsubishi Pencil Co. Ltd.) It's indistinguishable when writing side by side. I have found the same colour made by many other companies who make disposable pens, so please don't think this colour is amazingly unique.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Gyokuro tea, 14 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Work so well with loose tea. I simply spooned in the correct quantity of loose gyokuro tea into the pouch and poured on water @ 70 Celsius and brewed for two minutes whilst swirling the bag around a few times and resting the open end over the edge of my little cup? Works a treat and since the leaves have more space to circulate, I was able to get three 200ml cups out of it whereas with a metal ball, only two is possible.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dreadful by any standard!, 11 Feb 2014
Why make a film with such an evocative, historical title and then make the plot barely anything to do with that title? Imagine. making a film called 'Lord of the Rings' and having the plot about a dwarf jewellers on the Grassmarket. How about a 'Star Wars' film about the life-cycle of gaseous fusion reactors in space? The only reason I can think of is to fool some people into the cinema thinking they're going to see one thing when in fact it's something completely different. Even this is a tenuous idea since we live in an information-rich society, so why did they do this. I just don't know.

The film is at best, a pretty ordinary fantasy film replete with huge special effects, a child-friendly plot and lush costumes, but it's a forgettable film evidenced by the speed to which it's gone onto disc. I personally found it dull, formulaic and embarrassing for the actors starring in it, but then I'm not a fan of the recent gamut of super hero, Marvel/Vertigo Comics films finding them childish, vacuous and impoverished of any thoughtfulness. This version of 47 Ronin is aimed at people who do like these sorts of films and that's fine if you do like them, this film hits the spot. But don't sully the heroism, valour and memories of the actual 47 Ronin buried at Sengakuji, Tokyo, by naming this film after them.
