Two good reasons to buy this CD: since Ralph Sutton's disparition, I have never heard a young lady with fresh mind and hands delivering such a perfect style of stride piano. Second the sound is perfect.

If you buy this excellent Concord box of 5 CDs (1960-72, 100 titles) covering the ABC-Paramount singles, the wallet of 8 CDs Atl R274731 covering the Atlantic recordings (1952-60, 165 titles) and the 2 CDs Ebony 8001/2 covering his first sessions in LA for Down Beat and Swingtime, you will possess all worthwhile recordings of Ray Charles up to 1961 and you will be free to search for the 2 fabulous black & white DVDs on early concerts Ray Charles's with a stupendous Marjorie Hendricks among the Raylets.
The present Concord box contains 80% masterpieces, or more if you like numbers with strings. Atl covers his best period. You may be deceived by the Ebony CDs as Ray Charles is not yet himself singing as a Nat King Cole clone. Nevertheless Nat was a great jazz pianist earning his living with his velvet voice. A personal memory about this last point: I was staying in South Africa in the 50s when a tall blond women, an afikaner of strict apartheid obedience, invited me in her luxuous house. Hearing that I liked music, what did she put on the record player stressing that she beloved this man and singer? A Nat Cole's Capitol LP!

This Classic Jazz CD contains the entire session (9 titles) recorded in New York in 1960 by a Bob Wilber quintet composed of Clark Terry, Dick Wellstood, George Duvivier and Panama Francis. The musicians were evidently quite happy to play together and were in top form. Just think of sharing the pleasure of listening with a friend to very good arrangements by Bob Wilber on various facets of the blues, a hard swinging rhythmic session, a pianist who still can play "stride" and a trumpet part which is one of the best of the 60's I can think of. This CD is a must.

Excellent purchase. Cheatham was 70 when this studio recording took place in Toulouse, France in May 1975, still sounding fresh and elegant as in his primes. The backing is first rate (Sammy Price-p, Carl Pruitt-b, J.C. Heard-dm). This CD proves eloquently that Doc was one of the best tp in mainstream jazz, unfortunately rather underrated even after his stay with the DeParis brothers in the fifties. Of the 12 titles, 3 were previously unreleased on LP. Highly recommended even if you have the LP as the studio remastering in Paris is excellent.

Has the same content as another B & B CD entitled "Lonesome in my bedroom", that is the last session recorded by Luther Johnson's sextet in Paris, December 18, 1975, 3 months before his untimely death at 41 years old. There are no many CDs as this one: 13 titles (one alternate take) all of them very good, in the Muddy Waters Blues Band rhythmic style of Luther's beginnings. One of the masterpieces on this CD is "Lonesome in my bedroom", a dramatic blues in minor key lasting more than 6 min. Luther's voice and guitar and Fred Below backing are the main assets (Willie Mabon and Little Mac Simmons are rather indifferent) and Hubert Sumlin intervenes efficiently in two titles.
This CD is very worth buying, as well as another Luther's B & B CD entitled "Born in Georgia" in trio with Sonny Thompson and Johnny Shines.

Boozoo Chavis predates Clifton Chenier and this CD will be an interesting discovery if you only know those of the latter. A cajun musician full of energy. Recommended.

If Jim Galloway is not in your collection, this double CD is a good start. The material was originally issued on LP as "Three is company" (1973), "Thou swell" (1981) and "Humphrey Lyttelton in Canada" (1983) with a generous 171 minutes total playing time. Dick Wellstood can be heard on 10 titles and is decidedly a magnificent pianist. Jim plays on all 27 titles either soprano sax (excellent), baritone sax (less so) or clarinet. Recommended.

Excellent. Shirley Scott's recordings with Eddie Davis are outstanding and are a must for any mainstream jazz collection. On the present 1966 Impulse session, Shirley can be heard as a solist backed by Ron Carter (b) and Jimmy Cobb (d) and her organ expertise can be appreciated to the full. This japanese CD is remastered from the original analog 1960's source material using 20 bit A/D converter (K2 interface) and the sound is excellent. Recommended.

Excellent. The complete Bluebird recordings from May 15, 1939 to March 22, 1940. The great Joshua Altheimer can be heard on 8 titles, probably the most authentic and moving classic blues pianist of all times. Horace Malcolm holds the piano on 8 other titles with some short but magnificent solos. The pulsation of Big Bill is recognizable on all 24 titles. Washboard Sam's vocals are not particularly attractive but his washboard beat sure is. Recommended.
