3.0 out of 5 stars A Great Heart, 8 Jun. 2013
This review is from: Poems (Kindle Edition)
Sometimes L.D.Gliddon uses the wrong word. That needs to be said. "Preach" rhymes with "reach" but it summons up thoughts and ideas that have nothing to do with the excited shouting of "higher, higher!" by a boy as his father pushes him on a swing.

A serious flaw? Yes, if it stops you from opening your heart to "Our Last Goodbye", the poignant story of a man reminiscing at his father's deathbed.

There are other faults in these poems which arise similarly from inexperience or the lack of a good rhyming dictionary. But to miss what L.D.Gliddon says about love, family, alcoholism, anxiety, feeling responsible for a tragedy... because of them, would be to miss the birth of a poet blessed with courage, empathy for others and a great heart.

Lovely to have "Anchored Down In Anchorage" and other great songs by Michelle. She's a great lyricist, a great human being.

I was a child when my dad brought this wonderful album home from America. Joan Baez sings Bob Dylan with what sounds like amplified acoustic guitars.

This book is contemptible. The print is so tiny it's a chore to read. In fact, I don't think anyone will read it. Whoever is responsible should be locked up on Robbin Island for about twenty years.

Ingrid Jonker was one of our greatest poets. This film captures her tragic life. It also gives an authentic view of South Africa of that time. Odd having her speaking English though, not Afrikaans, her mother tongue. They could have used subtitles.

I haven't read the book. It's not a novel. For me it's for dipping into. It's like having Kurt Vonnegut alive and at hand.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Story of Unrequited Love, 24 May 2011

When I first saw this great film, a good few years ago, I was haunted by Richard Harris's Frank Machin, registering his struggle both off and on the rugby field while somehow overlooking the love story at the film's heart... Seeing it again has shifted my perspective. Frank has a fatal need to win over and earn the respect and love of his landlady, the widow Mrs Hammond - played by Rachel Roberts. Her rejection of him and refusal to acknowledge him as a man is at the core of the tragedy.

There are scenes between the two of them I will never forget. Praise must go to director Lindsay Anderson but especially to David Storey who wrote the screenplay from his novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars O Lucky Man!, 24 May 2011
This review is from: O Lucky Man! [DVD] (DVD)
Naive and cocky, Mick Travis played by Malcolm McDowell, finds it easy to smile at the start of this Candide-like tale. Will he still be smiling at the finish of it?
Recruited to sell coffee to the impoverished North, he is plunged into a series of encounters with corrupt, malicious or amoral characters, who all want him to sell them his body and soul. Mick learns fast but will he learn fast enough?
The joy of this film is in spotting who's who in the merry-go-round of actors (Ralph Richardson, Helen Mirren, Arthur Lowe, Rachel Roberts, Mona Washbourne and others) playing multiple roles... In Alan Price's caustic and witty songs (and his presence with his band in the film) while we follow Mick's rising or declining fortunes. Mick stands for a kind of Everyman.
I love the film, directed by the great Lindsay Anderson (look out for him acting as himself) and have done since I first saw it in 1974, the night before my son was born. I was a lucky man.
