The First Three Years
The First Three Years
Price: £8.27

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, 30 Sep 2014

This review is from: The First Three Years (Audio CD)
I bought this album expecting to hear the rough early work (plus a few covers) of one of my favourite singer/song-writers. Instead I was shocked how accomplished the whole things sounds, from the powerful lyrics to the intensely emotive singing, underscored by some really evocative riffs on the acoustic guitar. Even the covers are unfailingly inspired interpretations and work brilliantly. If you're a fan of Frank Turner this album is a must have. This is, I think, a work of an unusual rawness and intensity. As an added bonus you get a shedload of songs for your money.

I'm waiting for Amazon to deliver the Second Three Years now.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great accesory for car jacks, 31 July 2014
This review is from: Ice Hockey Puck (Misc.)
As has been said in many reviews, this puck works very well on top of a hydraulic jack, to provide a fairly soft and level surface between the jack head and the jacking point of the car. I don't understand why the manufacturers of hydraulic jacks don't make such parts, as you can't really use a jack without them, but since they don't this puck is a vital accessory for any jack owner.

Be warned, however, that the puck is very tough (as it needs to be to support a heavy car), so cutting the four necessary grooves into its surface is quite hard - I had to use a cutting blade on a Dremel rotary tool at over 20,000rpm in the end, in conjunction with a tough flat-head screwdriver. It took about an hour to do this, but once done it fitted securely onto my jack.

As a bonus I'm told that you can use this to play hockey on ice, although I can't see why you'd want to. Good product.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent but overated, 12 Mar 2014

If you buy Clearzine expecting the miracle cure alluded to by many of the top reviews of this product, I think you're going to be disappointed - ultimately it's a dietary supplement and is of some use alongside a good regimen (I use a gentle facial cleanser in the morning and evening).

I've taken Clearzine for about six weeks now (results were noticeable after a week or two), starting with four capsules a day and gradually working down to two a day (some think Vitamin B5 may lead to hair-loss if taken for too long in excess). As a result, my skin became noticeably less oily, spots faded slightly and cystic acne (hard inflammation) was almost entirely prevented. A few weeks in however, I had a breakout and disappointingly a lot of the spots which had faded reappeared.

At this point I decided to purchase a benzoyl peroxide cream from my local pharmacy (has to be bought behind the counter, although no subscription is required) - Quinoderm 5. This cream has almost completely got rid of my spots (although I've had to start using an oil-free moisturiser as the cream really dries the skin out) and only costs £4.29. If you've not yet tried benzoyl peroxide (perhaps you've only tried products you can get off the shelf) I can't recommend it enough - it's hugely effective.

As for Clearzine, it's worth trying if you've already tried most other products without success and it should help with your acne - just don't expect too much - it's an over-priced and overrated product in my honest opinion. Worryingly, many of the top reviewers have only ever written one review, and included in the package there really is a slip offering free pills if you rate the product (I didn't follow the link however, so I'm not sure if it has to be a favourable review - I presume so given what others have said).

My top piece of advice is try Benzoyl Peroxide if you haven't already. Clearzine is useful, but didn't get rid of my spots.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Incredible, 22 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Taking the Viewsonic out of its box I was immediately struck by what a great looking thing this is, before I'd even turned it on - the bezel is really thin and the glossy plastics are nicely used. The base is reassuringly sturdy as well. The cables provided in the box (an HDMI cable, crucially, as well as the power cable, an audio wire [for those not using HDMI] and a VGA cable) are generous considering the low price.

It's the image quality of the IPS display which really excels, however - it is utterly superb and you'll never want to go back to TFT again. Genuinely fantastic.

The only disadvantage is the mediocre speakers, but then again I bought this monitor to use as a monitor - I have speakers already, so for me this is barely a criticism.

To sum up - this level of quality for £150 is simply astounding. It's a beautiful monitor with beautiful image quality. Don't be put off by the apparent obscurity of this monitor and the lack of reviews on Amazon - it's a great product. Take a look at Techradar's review for a professional opinion.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Amber Lager, 31 May 2013
This review is from: BROOKLYN Lager Lager 355ml Bottle
This is a lovely lager; on opening the bottle you are greeted by a strong and flora aroma of hops, and the taste is well balanced, with a pleasant body, crisp palate and a rich (and slightly bitter) aftertaste. It's also agreeably carbonated. Which is good. Brooklyn is a really nice and easy lager to drink on a warm afternoon - I strongly recommend.

3.0 out of 5 stars Functional but Irritating, 31 May 2013

This review is from: Jumbo LCD Timer (Kitchen & Home)
I bought this count-down timer to use with exam practise papers, and it does an adequate job for the price. That said, it emits a loud and shrill beep every time you press any of the buttons, so setting the time is a far more irritating process that it should be. Holding your finger over the speaker on the rear helps, or alternatively you can undo the two screws on the back and cut the speaker wires. Which is clearly not a modification you should have to make. Anyway, the screen is perfectly big, so it does an okay job overall.

It works well, the connection is sturdy and the price reasonable.

It's worth noting that there is no difference between a 'SATA II' and a 'SATA III' cable (providing both are of decent quality, such as this one)- cables are labeled 'SATA III' entirely for marketing purposes.

To quote the official SATA3 documentation ([...]
'Changes to the protocol itself are minor, and the physical connectors and cables remain unchanged.'
So it does not matter whether you choose a cable labeled 'SATA2' or 'SATA3'- the cables are exactly the same- please don't be fooled into paying more for a meaningless label. This "SATA II" cable should suit everyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic collection of BIS games, 31 Mar 2012
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Arma: X is a complete collection of BIS' mil sims since the original Operation Flashpoint (now called 'Arma: Cold War Assualt' on the box for reasons involving an unfair copy right dispute). The added bonus material included in the case is a nice extra- but it's the games inside which really shine. Arma: Cold War Assualt feels very outdated graphically yet is still really great fun to play (more than a decade after its release), whilst Arma 1 has decent graphics even by today's standards, and is a good experience, if slightly rough around the edges. There are (or rather there used to be) a huge range of mods for Arma 1 which take the game to a whole new level- although you may struggle to find them around as most websites took them down a while ago. Arma 2, its expansion pack Operation Arrowhead and its two DLCs ('British Armed Forces' and 'Private Military Company') are the pinacle of Arma: X. Arma 2 is an epic game with beautiful graphics and open gameplay. Very challenging yet rewarding. The editor in Arma 2 gives you complete freedom and allows you to make your own scenarios with minimal hassle. The multiplayer is great. Plus there are a huge range of mods for Arma 2 and a very active and talented community, which continue to strengthen and widen Arma 2.

Considering the large amount of content included the price is very reasonable.
Well worth getting for any BIS fan. Be warned: it's very time consuming.

5.0 out of 5 stars The CPU King, 27 Feb 2012
The Intel i5 2500k really is an incredible CPU. For under £170 nothing else comes close. It's impressively power efficient and runs at a very reasonable temperature. Yet more importantly its performance is staggering- a genuine tour-de-force from Intel.

To start it overclocks brilliantly- a stable 5 GHz is possible with a good air cooler, whilst 4.7 or 4.8 GHz is a perfectly achievable everyday overclock, which should avoid excessively high voltages. That said you don't even need to overclock it in order to get good performance- its architecture and IPC are both brilliant and as such it offers great performance even at stock frequencies. The turbo feature is also very useful for anyone who doesn't fancy- or really need- an overclock.

Furthermore it bulldozes through applications (AMD can't hope to match it unfortunately) and is sensationally good in games. Just google 'i5 2500k reviews' and have a look at some of the benchmarks recorded. Sensational.

I remember being shocked when the i5 2500k was first released a year ago- despite costing a fraction of the price it gave the beastly £800 Intel hexacore i7 980x a decent run for its money, even managing to surpass it in less multi-threaded applications. I couldn't believe that Intel could possibly sell a £200 CPU which could match their king-of-the-hill £800 hexacore. This concept made no economic sense. And a whole year later the i5 2500k still remains the unchallenged mid-range king. The perfect trade-off between price and performance (much more of the latter). A remarkable achievement indeed. It even fares well against Intel's newest extreme hexacores (LGA 2011) which easily cost three or four times as much. The i5 2500k isn't the fastest CPU in the market (although it isn't too far off...), yet it offers by far the best value for money.

I used around about twelve of these brilliant CPUs in 2011- I used them in every single rig I made, for myself, for friends and for family- all were centred around the black magic of the i5 2500k.

So there you have it- as 2012 commences it appears there still isn't any worthy challenger to the i5 2500k. Someone bring me a bucket- I'm going to need a whole lot more of these :D
