...and I found the The Gift of Rain by first-time novelist Tan Twan Eng more emotionally engaging...I keep telling everyone about it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb, Exceptional and Uplifting, 7 July 2007
Swedish film about a sick maestro-conductor who returns to his village and there helps train a choir. One of the best movies ever, with a anthemic song at the crux of it. Recommended!

At least this is shorter! Well-written and moody. I'd also recommend The Gift Of Rain by Tan Twan Eng.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully written, 6 July 2007
This review is from: The House at Riverton (Paperback)
Loved this book. As good as The Gift of Rain by a new author named Tan Twan Eng, I feel. Will recommend both to friends and readers. Both books are atmospheric, exciting and gripping and yet literary.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good start and weak ending, 6 July 2007
A thought provoking novel with a strong first half but a disappointing ending. But I'd still recommend this and also The Gift of Rain by Tan Twan Eng, which I read based on friends' recommendations and the reviews n amazon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very readable, 6 July 2007
This review is from: The Kite Runner (Paperback)
Fast moving coming of age novel let down by several obvious Bollywood plot developments and unnecessary homophobia.

I would also recommend The Gift of Rain, by Tan Twan Eng - evocative and written in understated manner, dealing with similar themes of growing up in a time of war, love, family, loyalty and redemption.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 6 July 2007
I loved her first book which was funny and well-written. This one read like the first draft of a work in progress. Needed A LOT of editing and rewrites. Agree with the earlier reviewer: Someone was robbed of a Booker.

I would recommend instead The Gift of Rain, which is very readable and evocative and higly recommended by reviewers on amazon. The author is Tan Twan Eng.
