Photo Recipes Live: Part 2: Behind the Scenes, Part 2: Your Guide to Today's Most Popular Lighting Techniques
Photo Recipes Live: Part 2: Behind the Scenes, Part 2: Your Guide to Today's Most Popular Lighting Techniques
by Scott Kelby
Edition: Paperback
Price: £28.00

4.0 out of 5 stars It's OK for anyone new to lighting, 30 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Purchased this on a whim. If you are new to off camera flash or flash in general you may watch it two or three times. Mr Kelby does have a nice laid back approach to tuition which is great for beginners.

However if you a confident in: balancing available light with off camera flash, know what a pocket wizard is, understand how to darken a sky with a flash gun, know the difference between a beauty dish and a soft-box I would suggest this is not for you.

I got nothing out of it, but I have given it a 4 as to be fair it is a 4 when viewed by the audience it was intended for.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nothing to complain about, 30 May 2014

Have a couple of these and use them for weddings. They take just as much punishment as the branded Canon packs and last just as long. Correctly logged by the camera which reliably reports their remaining charge. No hesitation in recommending them.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's an 'OK' read, but left me a little dissapointed., 30 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
First the negatives:

This book appears to be dated, published in 2008 it references Photoshop CS3. The HDR software has also moved on too.

It follows a standard pattern adopted by many HDR books, lots of wow images and general guidance on how to create them.
I was disappointed in the area I struggle with, movement in merged images. This is covered with bullet point suggestions and a small paragraph. In general, the content is not difficult to comprehend, but I could not absorb the information without the software up and running so I could refer to the program. My eyes just glazed over trying to read it on the train.

The plus: It did give me creative ideas, I had not thought of some techniques such as the merging multiple flash images together. It also pointed me in the right direction on how to assess images and a better workflow with PhotoMatix Pro.

To sum up: Not a complete guide, if you don't mind reading off a screen then others have posted the same sort of guidance online for free. A nice book to browse and dip into whilst using the software. If you ever spot it on sale for £7.99 ish then snap it up. At £15 if I had seen it in a retail outlet and flicked through it, I would possibly not have purchased.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good value for money, 15 Jan. 2014

Really cannot moan, its a good price, quality is good. The holes for the sensor and camera are a little close on tolerance and can be out of alignment a bit from time to time. Not an issue though, just a quick wiggle to reposition..

3.0 out of 5 stars Not sure they got the rating correct for this.., 15 Jan. 2014
Good for a 'watch once' DVD
Never quite sure if I am simply behind the times, but a 15 rating for some of the material left me dubious they had got the rating correct.

1.0 out of 5 stars Yes, its a toy, but it's still not fit for purpose, 2 Dec. 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Very disappointing.

I appreciate that this is a toy, but even so, it is sold as an operational metal detector.
Even with tons of fiddling and adjusting the only thing it was capable of detecting were items placed on the the surface, and I can use my eyes more effectively to find those!

With the smallest of covering of sand or dirt this will render the device useless.

Spend you money elsewhere.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another tool to help inspiration, 2 Dec. 2013

Many books of this style are now being published which are aimed, I would suggest, at the enthusiast and those studying photography. The lighting set ups are clear and concise. Images showcased are created from natural lighting, constant lighting, portable strobes and multiple 'studio' strobe set ups. Some on location others within a studio, so not everyone will have the ability to recreate every image.

In general each double page spread consists of a reference image on one side and the lighting diagram and accompanying text on the other. Printing quality is good, with clear descriptions.

A good book to flick through for ideas and as a reference on how create a certain style, and a good place to then expand on those ideas with your own interpretation. Useful if you are stuck for an idea.

Certainly worth adding to your library.

Tefal FV3680 Superglide Steam Iron - Purple
Tefal FV3680 Superglide Steam Iron - Purple
Price: £24.99

2.0 out of 5 stars Not up to Tefals normal standard, 7 Aug. 2013
Originally purchased this iron from a local retailer five months ago. I expected more for the price (at the time). I notice it seems to have dropped considerably in price since then. You may be happy with the quality at the current selling price.

Having had several Tefal Irons over the years this is the poorest of them all.

1. Filler lid has small vent hole. This constantly drips water when in use down the side of the iron and your hand.
2. Steam output is poor, boost button is good for a couple of blasts then needs time to reheat
3. Vertical steaming is also poor. Unlike previous models this one requires you to pump the steam button five times when vertical, then you need to return the iron to the horizontal for 5 seconds to allow gravity to load the sole plate with water again. Steam output is not so much a puff - more a wheeze.

Contacted Tefal who were dismissive and said it was working to specification. Iron is now a spare and have invested in a higher spec iron. To be honest very disappointed in Tefals customer care, I expected a little more belief in my complaint.

Again at £25 its probably 'OK' but personally spend a bit more and do yourself a favour.

4.0 out of 5 stars As good as any branded reflector, 16 May 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Little to be said about this larger version of the more commonly found smaller sized reflector.
Good construction with a decent zip. Slightly more bulky to carry around, but the additional surface area allows for more light to be
directed at your subject.

The £12 price at purchase is easily justifiable and the quality is as good as the known brands.

Giottos Short Column for MTL92/82 Tripods
Giottos Short Column for MTL92/82 Tripods

4.0 out of 5 stars A useful addition, 4 Feb. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
I have always been a fan of the Giottos tripods, the MTL92/82 range come with a long column which is OK if you need the extra height. I tend to avoid using columns extended as they reduce the stability. The down side of the long column is the inability to get the camera low to the ground, spreading the tripods legs out to the maximum requires the column to be extended upwards - which is self defeating.

The short column removes this obstacle. Easy to swop between the two as required.

Drops a star for innacurate instructions on how to swop the thread adaptor. This has been criticised for some time and still Giottos have the old paperwork being shipped, unless this was old stock.
