I used the excellent Ladybird ABC book for my four children over 40 years ago and they learnt their first
words from the extremely lifelike (even though hand painted) pictures on each page, each one showing a familiar everyday object, 'a' is for apple, 'b' is for ball, etc. and have been able to find nothing currently available which in any way approaches the simplicity and accuracy of this little book, which I believe cost me all of 2 old shillings.
When I purchased My Home: First Words and Pictures for my grandchildren I was very disappointed by the insipidly coloured, indifferent pictures. As an example, the chair, which resembles a bear with wooden legs and looks nothing like any chair my grandchildren can relate to. The 'window' and 'garden' are totally wishy washy.
