by S. J. Parris
Edition: Hardcover

5.0 out of 5 stars Historical Detective Fiction, 23 April 2014

This is another brilliant novel in the Giordano Bruno series. S J Parris' semi fictional Bruno has been cleverly drawn from the many sources available - the author has studied Bruno and his published works in great depth to achieve such a clear picture of Bruno and his era. The plot is well paced, making this book a real page turner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Renaissance Philosophy, 23 April 2014

De Umbris Idearum is the key to the thinking of Giordano Bruno. This is the first English translation, and it is an excellent clearly written work. The translator, Scott Gosnell has worked miracles in getting this book into intelligible modern English. This book is indispensable for anybody interested in the work of Bruno, or in Renaissance occult philosophy.

David Munro was an important figure in the revival and popularisation of early music. This compilation uses the instruments of the time in a great number of styles and tempos. The notes included are reasonably comprehensive. Anybody who likes this style of music will enjoy these recordings.

Vines Vintage American Bay Rum Hair Tonic 2 litre
Vines Vintage American Bay Rum Hair Tonic 2 litre
Offered by Diamond Edge Ltd
Price: £23.75

4.0 out of 5 stars Traditional Hair Tonic, 5 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a quality bay rum, exactly as has been used for non-greasy hair styling for more than 80 years. The only disadvantage of the packaging is that it is very difficult to pour without spilling. If the package was provided with a pull out spout it would be easier to use.

The Dictes and Sayings of the Philosophers: A Facsimile Reproduction of the First Book Printed in England by William Caxton, in 1477.
by Abu Al-Wafa Mubashshir Ibn Fatik
Edition: Paperback
Price: £5.99

5.0 out of 5 stars Renaissance Classic Book, 5 Jan. 2014

This book is considered to be the first printed in England by William Caxton. As such it is a landmark in the progress of the Renaissance. The language of the book is early modern English, essentially the same as that used by William Shakespeare. This demonstrates how much language had moved on by 1477 from the time of Chaucer, only 100 years previously. The Gothic style print takes some adjusting to, and a knowledge of Middle English will help the reader, as the text uses many runes in their print abbreviation context. The sayings attributed to the philosophers bear little relationship to what they actually said and are generally homilies of good sense. This in itself demonstrates the interest that literate people in the late 1400's had in philosophy - an absolute mind shift from the Middle Ages.

It is possible to find all the necessary extra information about obsolete words and type styles on the internet, but it would be more convenient if the book could be reprinted with a glossary.
