5.0 out of 5 stars GYNT`S BEST with Dear Murderer, 30 Sep 2007
This review is from: Take My Life [1947] (VHS Tape)
In 1947, the Norewegian actress Greta Gynt scored a triumphant success with two films; namely TAKE MY LIFE and DEAR MURDERER.... It lead to a Hollywood-contract with Robert Siodmak/Universal, but she withdrew.....

This fast-paced little noir-thriller is highlighted by memorable performances by the entire cast and crew(it was Ronald Neame`s first film) - and many a reviewer has stated that this could have been the Hitchcock-thriller he never was to make:-))

The last 20 minutes is pure cinematic gold:-)

5.0 out of 5 stars ELVIS IN HIS PRIME..., 7 Feb 2006
This review is from: Jailhouse Rock [DVD] (DVD)
Yes, he did make 33 films and most of them are utterly forgettable.... But a few deserves better observation, like Love Me Tender 1956, King Creole 1958, Flaming Star 1960 og Stay Away Joe 1968... AND Jailhouse Rock....
In this film Elvis Presley displays a raw edge and playes the role of the antihero quite well. I much more prefer Elvis to James Dean in that respect...
This is an MGM production and Elvis made it quite clear he was not to make a musical in the mould of the standard MGM musical tradition. The choreography is pure rock`n roll(c how Fred Astaire embaressed the new thing in SILK STOCKINGS, made the same year at MGM)...
This is NOT a classic or a GREAT picture by any means, but it captures ELVIS PRESLEY at his prime and as a pretty good actor and THAT IS THE BEST U CAN GET:-)

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT GREAT GREAT, 17 Jan 2006
This review is from: King Kong [DVD] (DVD)
I must say that after reading countless articles about what FLOP this film was in the 70s, I must came to rescue...
I saw the film at the theatrical release and IT WAS huge crowd to see it. Never mind what Peter Jackson experienced in New Zealand. It`s sad - but at the moment it is popular to give it the trash-treatment...
What is is.... it is a beautiful, strange, telling fable about love between a beauty and a beast. It`s that simple. It stands firmly on it`s own feet and while I love the 33 classic and espcially the color version which I bought yersterday, this is a more quiet, sober chapter to the myth of Kong.
I love this dvd and Peter Jackson SHOULD have learned something from the 33 and the 76-films... He found it necessary to OPEN the film(he tries to stick to the 33 version), but only succeeds when he is reworking the classic. It`s overlong and it takes tooo long to get to Skull Island.... he even tortures us with characters that are NOT essential to the plot(Jimmy and his friend)...
KING KONG 1976 have beutiful locations from Hawaii, while the 2005 film remains a computer game - too often we laughed at the blue screen and special effects - I MEAN C`MON....... THIS IS 2005!!!!!!!!! Movie kingdom has indeed come to an end if one is to film an entire film like KONG with blue screen(watch the making of th 2005 film)...
The 1976 film has a BEAUTIFUL SCORE and BEAUTIFUL locations and I don`t care if Rick Baker wore an apesuite.... HE`S SPLENDID IN THE JOB.... As far as I rememember the 2005 Kong also covered a certain actor?
Jessica Lange is as good as it gets and I MUST SAY; many viewers agree with me that the 1976 is an IMPORTANT tribute to the Kong myth. Unlike the 33 and 76 version, Jackson made Kong as just another monster on the island and the New York sequences(only the Empire State Building sequence survives)are boring.... Another letdown is when Ann entertains Kong with vaudeville tricks and they have a Bambi-moment on ice in New York....
Nope... Ignore articles about what flop this film was - and experience a great film with great performances and with the KING KONG of 1933 - the best film ABOUT KONG:-)

5.0 out of 5 stars STILL FRIGHTENING.... and amusing hehehe, 17 Jan 2006
I saw these films in the early 80s on television. And now after many runs on the vcr, finally own èm on dvd.... FRANKENSTEIN 1931 is still a fright to me. Because of Boris Karloff and a wonderful supporting cast headed by Dwight Frye, the gothic atmosphere and the absence of music - you can SMELL death and fear.... Compared to later films you might say that the production values are small, but the stylistic rich black and white photography and ingredients mentioned above make this an all-time-classic which STILL WORKS....
THE BRIDE OF FEANKENSTEIN 1935 is pure James Whale. It is a glittering celebration of drama, suspense, trick work and black humour.... After reading about and seeing GODS AND MONSTERS(about Mr Whale with Ian McKellen in a great performance) - this is indeed an auteur film....
These two films should always be seen together after a small interval....

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST PARODY EVER, 10 Nov 2005
This review is from: Scary Movie [DVD] [2000] (DVD)
....I have grown up with glowing reviews of Mel Brooks`"Blazing Saddles" 1974, BUT THIS 1 is it...
It manages BOTH to be hilariously funny AND scary.... I don`t seem to find any fault with it.... It is a constant joy to see this film and it never overtays its welcome.
The script, direction and performances are first rate:)(:

4.0 out of 5 stars Kirk in his 2nd "Norwegian" film, 6 Feb 2005
THE HEROES OF TELEMARK is fortunatley relased in a widescreen DVD edition, so the photography is in its full original splendour...
This is good entertainment without being too far from the truth... The film is shot in the original locations were the events took place. It has a raw feeling of truth and the sinking of the ferry is a standout... The film is a legend in my country(every "Inger" from Rjukan claimed to be Michael Douglas`girlfriend while he was working as an assistant on the film hehe).
Knut Straud(Richard Harris) was in fact Knut Haukelid, brother of the actress SIGRID GURIE(who starred with Charles Boyer in ALGIERS, Gary Cooper in THE ADVENTURES OF MARCO POLO and John Wayne in THREE FACES WEST)... He himself starred in the Norwegian-French original "Kampen om tungtvannet"(Battle over the Heavwater)1948 and cast Sigrid in the film, but her scenes were deleted. That film is OK, but it can`t catch up to the 1965-remake...
Another nice fact is that Gil Woxholt is the 2nd-unit director and cameraman. H e is the brother of GRETA GYNT, the heroine of the British classics DARK EYES OF LONDON, TAKE MY LIFE and DEAR MURDERER...
My father, a former military-man, met Knut Haukelid several times and spoke to me some days ago of a man of great integrity and courage... I myself co-starred with actor Helge Jordal in a TV-sitcom called "Martin`s Exciting Adventures" 1996, which told the story of workers at this factory in Rjukan in 1912.
But this is THE HEROES OF TELEMARK! An exiting tribute to the Norwegian resistance during the war... I place it alongside many a warfilm from the 50s and 60s...

5.0 out of 5 stars ANTONIE KAMERLING - GREAT, 28 Feb 2004
This review is from: Suite 16 [VHS] [1995] (VHS Tape)
I saw this in 1995 - I was spellbound - still is... It is the pinnacle of egotism, sex, maniplulation and sexual intrigue...
A GREAT AND DARING FILM:-) Antonie Kamerling is SEXY and has great acting recourses. Period!

4.0 out of 5 stars JOHNNY AT MOST MAGNETIC, 28 Feb 2004
Through the 90s I always heard myself quoting that Depp is the most magnetic since Valentino...
And here HE REALLY IS! He has something of Grabo.... we just analyze what we want in his faultless face.... the film is poetic, irritating, dull, compelling.... The indian is a metaphore of Mr Death - leading the protagonist through his last journey....
It is a bit hard 2 warm 2 at tiems; but it is worth it:-)

4.0 out of 5 stars JOHNNY`S BEST COMEDY PERFORMANCE, 2 Nov 2003
Johnny Depp gives a landmark performance as the pathetic Jack Sparrow in this pirate-film. The films owns much 2 old films, such as The Crimson Pirate 1952(when they walk under sea covered by a rowboat for instance...)
All good fun; but it overstays it`s welcome when the girl is kidnapped and the last 30 minutes are a much....
Editing would have been preferable. Still - good production values cannot diminsh that IT IS JOHNNY DEPP who is the watchable item in this picture.

5.0 out of 5 stars PURE HOLLYWOOD MOONSHINE, 12 Oct 2003
... though the producer and director was Alexander Korda(From Hungary, lived in England) on a mission(sent by Churchill)to make a propaganda film in order to get the Americans involved with what happened here in Europe. Indeed, his actions were questioned and he was ordered to explain himself before the goverment... A few days later things happened at Pearl Harbor and the case was dropped...
Vivien Leigh and Emma Hamilton had striking similaraties. Both were thought to be the most beautiful of the period and both made their men become knighted by Britain. They both har brains and the most important thing in their lives were Nelson and Olivier. Emma died at 50, Vivien at 53... When Emma died; Nelson`s crew sailed in her honour(not seen in the film - they never fotgot their leader`s Emma) and when Vivien passed away; the theatres of London turned down their lights in her honour...
They were both strong-willed women... In fact; I think Vivien recognised this and played Emma on a variation of herself. Hugo Vicker`s brilliant 1986-book on Vivien reveal her chararcter quite good and it`s then easy 2 c Vivien playing herself in the film.
Korda said to her; "Vivien - Emma was VULGAR" - to which Vivien snapped back; "You wouldn`t have given me a contract if I`ve been vulgar,"
This is a good film thanks 2 Vivien, Olivier, Sara Allgood(and the rest of the supporting cast), the scenic design(by Alexander`s brother Zoltan Korda)and the brilliant lines spoken by the best Shakespearian actors in the Hollywood community.
Churchill loved it and presented Vivien with a self-made painting, It hung in her bedroom till she died...
This is an all-time must-c film.
