Dvd ~ The Beatles

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor attention to detail, 29 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Disappointing, a couple of the talking heads really don't seem to know what they're talking about, some bloke from Liverpool gets the chronology of John Lennon's addictions completley wrong but talks like it knows it all. Further issues with chronology as I Feel Fine is discussed out of sequence! A bit shoddy that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Steven Wilson - Genius?, 11 May 2013
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
STeven Wilson is just a brilliant writer, musician, producer and catalyst. This is an outstanding album, the writing is excellent as anyone familar with Steven's work will expect, and the backing musicians are just wonderful. I can listen to the album just for the drumming and percussion, small things count for so much on albums like this!

Steven Wilson, he's a genius in my book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pale Green Ghosts, an excellent follow up for the Queen of Denmark, 11 May 2013

This review is from: Pale Green Ghosts (Audio CD)
I loved the last album with the Midlake boys providing the backing, this is quite a different proposition with Icelandic musicians and Sinead O'Connor providing the support this time around. BUt, you know what? it is another brilliant John Grant album. Much more electro this time around, some of it reminded me of Bowie in his Low period, and less of the humour of the Queen of Denmark album. The lyrics are ear catching, sometimes that warm voice hides a great deal of anger, the sound is moody, it is an intriguing album.

4.0 out of 5 stars BEAT COMBOS AT THE BBC, 28 Aug. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
There is some wonderful stuff on this album, tracks from the Yardbirds that would latter feature as part of Led Zeppelin sets, three tracks from Love Sculpture, including a splendidly Yardbirdesque interpretation of George Harrison's Inner Light. The other tracks by the Move, Tomorrow, Jimi Hendrix and Deep Purple are also worth the investment. Sound quality is occasionaly as you would expect from radio broadcasts but mostly pretty good. If you're into this era of music this is a definite recommendation.

4.0 out of 5 stars RHUBARB & CUSTARD, 28 Aug. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is a bargain set which contains lots of lovely stuff if you appreciate the Peter & Gordon style. There is some filler on the first 2 albums but the Hot, Cold & Custard set is an absolute psychedelic gem. It has all the ingredients, backwards drums, intricate arrangements, intriguing lyrics and should have been a monster hit if it had been released in 67 rather than 68. It's wonderful if you're into that sort of thing and well worth the cost of the set alone. If you think about it that way you won't worry about the odd duff track on the other albums.

4.0 out of 5 stars PUGWASH - On a sea of warm sounds, 7 Jun. 2012
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Olympus Sound (Audio CD)
Pugwash have made a lovely album. There are definite nods to the Beatles, ELO, Idle Race etc but the sound is their own. The song writing and production are of high order and the album deserves to be a commercial success. I hope that it gets the exposure that it deserves. If you like a bit of psyche sample 15 Kilocycle Tone, something warm & melodic try The Warmth of You, there is range and diversity to the song writing.

I first came across Pugwash on a sampler CD for the very excellent SHINDIG! magazine and glad I am that I discovered them!

Good luck boys

5.0 out of 5 stars SPOOKY TOOTH'S DREAM ANTHOLOGY, 5 Oct. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
If you are at all interested in Spooky Tooth this is an essential purchase. The set covers the major tracks from albums of the period plus a couple of previously unissued pieces that are also very good. That cannot always be said of previously unissed material that crops up on this type of release. I recall Spooky Tooth from the period and they really should have been more commercially successful than they were. "Sunshine Help Me" was a stand out track from Island's first sampler "You Can All Join In". For those unfamiliar with the Spooky Tooth sound on that track imagine the Righteous Brothers going psyche, in a good way that is!

As well as writing their own material Spooky Tooth did cover a number of songs including "Tobacco Road", "The Weight", "Son of Your Father" and "I Am The Walrus" (which featured on another Island Compilation if I remember correctly. These covers were not just run-throughs, the band made them their own and turned them into something quite different from the originals. From their psyche beginnings to masterly prog with a touch of wierdness with a French avant garde composer (along the lines of the Electric Prunes Mass in F minor in concept possibily but musically on a much higher level) this set shows the range of Spooky Tooths ambition and musicality.

Informative sleeve notes and the recording sounds lovely. I don't know whether there's been any remastering or whether this simply reflects the care taken at the time but as you'd expect from the Cherry Red/Esoteric Records, the job's been beautifully done. A great buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Musical Mozartian Mackerras, 29 Oct. 2010

Lovely CD set of some of Mozart's greatest symphonies (not quite the greatest as they're on the sister set to this collection!). I have many recordings of these works and each conductor and orchestra has something to offer but these are wonderfully played and recorded and come highly recommended. At the price, a fantastic bargain.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Swedish Psyche, 27 Sept. 2010

The Tages will be familiar to many due to the inclusion of some of their work on the Rubble and other 60s psyche collections. Very often the album fails to match the quality of single tracks and is padded out with filler, not on this occasion though. There are many recordings here of genuine interest and quality for those with a love of 60s rarities and psychedelic music. Well worth exploring.
