5.0 out of 5 stars First-class, 29 Sept. 2009
Obviously from the price this is not an amateur lens. But it's much, much lighter than an 2.8 zoom, the stabilization is excellent (I've made sharp photos down to 1/15 sec at 200mm), it's full frame, and it's damnable sharp. It's one of those lenses which makes me feel I am not wasting the 21 megapixels in the 5D mark II.

3.0 out of 5 stars I'm confused, 12 Aug. 2009
This review is from: No Country For Old Men [DVD] (DVD)
A difficult movie to review. Through 80-90 percent of it I thought it was one of the most powerful and moving films I'd seen. Also had a lot of subtle humor. Beautiful acting and cinematography, and never clichéd.
But then it ended in not one of the many possible endings you could have imagined for the story, and it felt very unsatisfactory. To me at least. Pissed me off. I thought that was unnecessary, I don't know what the point was. It was like somebody putting out a delicious desert after an excellent meal, and then taking the desert away after you'd had one bite.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good interviews, 22 Mar. 2009
Interestingly, I find the interviews more compelling than the concert footage. For one thing, they avoided playing any songs from Raw Power, which to my mind is the strongest Stooges album. [Update: I just now see from an Iggy docu on the disc that on the third album, the Asheton brothers were not there. I don't know how they could call it a Stooges album. By the way, Ron Asheton just died in January of a heart attack.] [Update: according to wiki, the Ashetons were actually on it. Odd error in the documentary.] And in extension of that, I don't think Iggy is the greatest song writer on the planet, all my favorite records of his were done in collaboration with Msr. Bowie. (Bowie produced Raw Power. Iggy claimed he ruined it, but see what a classic it became.)

I am sure the girls still love Iggy, even at sixty. His stage persona is as kinetic as ever, he is fit, and he's continually fighting the tendency of his trousers to fall down. (I don't understand why he doesn't just buy a belt or suspenders...)

I always find it interesting when an artist manages to still be on top after 40 years. That's just a super-human accomplishment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, seminal, and funny, 15 Feb. 2009
This review is from: Adam & Paul [DVD] [2005] (DVD)
If described superficially, this movie is nothing appealing. It's a low budget, depressing film about two junkies.
But it's one of those films which for some reason or another, perhaps just raw talent, is brilliant. The timing, the acting, the dialogue, the photography, all outstanding. And not to mention, it is just damn *funny*.
If you like oddball, seminal movies, don't miss it.

I agree with the other reviewers. Even after I oiled the second one I bought, the slats still warped after a few months, and tend to come loose.

3.0 out of 5 stars Stop-button distress, 13 Dec. 2008
= Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
Works OK, but I'm hugely irritated by one thing: while the button which takes you to the game console menu politely asks you if you really want to stop playback, the Stop button (the one with a square on it) simply stops it, no going back.

If you press it, then you have to start the player up again, you have to sit through *all* the menus and disclaimers and warnings, language selections, logos, graphics candy and general BS, and *then* you have to navigate to the last place you played, because the machine does not remember it (why not, Sony? My DVD player remembers).

*And* the Stop button is right between the Play and the Pause buttons! I've pressed it several times by accident.

5.0 out of 5 stars Drama and humor, 28 Nov. 2008
This review is from: Reign Over Me [DVD] [2007] (DVD)
I just watched Reign Over Me. Brilliant movie.

Normally one would think it would not be something for me, because it's a "human drama" story. But it's a good one, it avoids the usual sentimental sand traps most of these movies are mired in.

And importantly, it has a lot of humor. It's subtle, of the kind people may not remember after, but it's there all the time. One small example: a therapist, played by lovely Liv Tyler, is told by a defensive patient that what he thinks about are her perfect tits. And next session she is wearing the bulkiest sweater you ever saw... and it's not even mentioned! That's excellent.

There's a bit of dangeous casting by Adam Sandler as the messed up guy, but he actually does a wonderful job.

One of the main themes of the film is also unique (so far as I know): even if it's obvious that a person needs to Get Help, and Open Up, and Face His Past, how much can you do for him? How much can you push him? Can you really help him? Is it him you really want to help, or youself?

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good, 5 Nov. 2008
Rincewind the wizard was never my favorite Terry Pratchett character, but I have to say they did a fine job turning this book into a three-hour film. (Or two TV episodes, whatever.) It had a good cast, including Jeremy Irons and the toothsome newcomer Laura Haddock, who did a fine job in the role as octogenarian Cohen The Barbarian's fair maiden.

Most of all, the dragons, buildings, and space turtles were detailed and beautiful to behold, created on a budget which would have lasted a Hollywood studio through lunch time. We are clearly out of the age where a TV production would have inferior graphics.

I'm hoping they will continue to make films from Pratchett's books, there's a wealth of humor, great stories and outlandish ideas to explore.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not multi-region, 7 Oct. 2008
I've only used it a little so far, but I just had to share this: contrary to some reports, this is not a multi-region player.

At least it remembers how far it played a disc!

... Update: it turns out my local hi-fi center can do it for a tenner, so that helps.

1.0 out of 5 stars Just not good, 24 Aug. 2008
This review is from: I Want Candy [DVD] (DVD)
Sorry, I just did not like this film. Every turn in the script was totally unbelievable, and it was not very funny.

Maybe some will like it. Put it this way: if you think that somebody eating toast with pubic hair in the butter is hilarious, and if are not bothered by the logic of two guys apparently believing that combining their epic love story film script with a porn movie will get them into Hollywood, then you'll like this film.
