HP Probook 4740S H5L38EA Intel® 2600 MHz 500 GB 4096 MB Radeon HD 7650M

5.0 out of 5 stars Very happy and satisfied with this laptop, 8 April 2015
i decided my old, slow hp 8730w needed an upgrade so after lots of research i went for this 4740s. i wanted something capable of playing some games, but didnt want to spend silly amounts for a gaming laptop. saw this one going for a fair price on ebay so it seemed to be the right choice.

the positives first. i read some reviews saying this fan is noisy, but i can honestly say its the quietest laptop ive ever had. i barely even notice it has a fan most of the time its so quiet. the screen has good level of brightness, not top of the line but its just enough to make it enjoyable. screen has a matte finish so obviously the image is not quite perfectly clear like it would be on a glossy laptop but the screen image is more than adequate and of course there are no reflections like there would be on a glossy screen which is why i wanted to buy matte. it has a 1600x900 resolution on the 17.3 inch screen, another reason why i bought it because this resolution is the "right" size for what my eyes think a resolution should be in my opinion. 1920x1080 on 17.3 screens is just too small to read for my liking. the processor on this laptop is blazing fast im very satisified with how fast the machine is in general usage. it comes with option to choose windows 7 or 8. i chose windows 7 and it boots up so fast in about 3 seconds i was amazed. it is also the lightest laptop i have ever bought i was pleasantly surprised with this too.

the negatives about this laptop are there is no backlight for the keyboard, so you struggle typing in a dark room sometimes. and the graphics card is not a bonafide gaming graphics card. the radeon 7650m is a low/medium range card capable of playing games like battlefield 2 on medium settings or battlefield 3 on low settings and most games released before 2012. graphics intensive games after 2012 will probably not play on this machine. lastly, in my opinon the fan does not spin fast enough when the temperature reaches high levels during gaming i think they should have made the fan spin faster to keep it cooler. so i think its a good idea to monitor what settings you use on games and try to make sure the temperature does not go up into the late 80/90 degree range if you want to keep the components safe and long lasting.

overall, if you want a mid-range gaming laptop that is very fast and a good all-round machine i would recommend this machine i am very satisfied with it.

Breville Juice Fountain Junior JE22
Breville Juice Fountain Junior JE22

5.0 out of 5 stars gets the job done very well, 12 Feb. 2014
the juicing on these brevilles is really good, it just blasts through everything, do not hesitate to get a breville. one small drawback on this particular model is the feed chute is very small so you have to chop stuff sometimes to get it in, but doesnt bother me much, for example just quickly halve an apple and it goes in.

if you want to avoid this you can spend a bit more and get the JE2 sized models which have a bigger chute. if youre strapped for cash this gets the job done very well. the juicing mechanism is extremely powerful! give a quick rinse after and youre finished! love the breville juicers :)

subtitles will not even slightly affect your enjoyment of this one. couldnt stop laughing all the way through i was wiping tears of laughter rather than tears of sadness. the french film industry have been churning out good quality films like this for quite a few years now but this the best of a great bunch. funny, moving, then after all the giggles the ending really gets you teary eyed.

fantastic, superb, brilliant, must watch!

4.0 out of 5 stars good film, nothing special, 6 Dec. 2013
the basis of a great story here and i enjoyed that part of it, a good old western throwback. however the violence felt like putting a square peg in a round hole, the script was very average and it was a bit slow. on second thoughts its not the pace, rather the anticipation during and between scenes.

gone are the days of tarantino films with razor sharp scripts, with the tension in scenes so intense it would get the hairs standing up on your neck! none of that here, just an good story and good direction. im sure the crowds lapped it up but i wasnt impressed.

overall, its good, but nothing special

its not an easy film to watch, very close to the bone in places and thats why i liked it, it doesnt pull any punches. makes you close to tears throughout but also a lot of optimism along the way. good script and some nice, sharp dialogues sprinkled throughout. acting and direction very good also. good quality british-style film making at its best once again here.

only negatives were i thought the first 20 minutes were bad, and the hugh grant-esque actor wasnt great.

overall, highly recommended

3.0 out of 5 stars mmmmm, 6 Dec. 2013
This review is from: The Impossible [DVD] [2013] (DVD)
a movie about a tsunami, it should be great, right? well not quite. the story is as you would expect, painful and somber, cant fault it. however the film was disappointing.

i thought the actors and script were poor. the directing was bad too, shaking the camera for no reason and lots of sideways sliding camera angles that werent needed. put this all together and the impact of the story is greatly reduced. if that sounds like nitpicking then its because i think a story like this about a tsunami deserves to be produced much better than what they managed to come up with.

overall, its a good story that could have been made into a much better film if the producers were different. worth a watch.

5.0 out of 5 stars hard to find any faults!, 4 Dec. 2013
i feel a bit generous giving it 5 stars, but then i cant really come up with any reasons not to! its got lots of interesting storylines, its funny, its a little tearful, its got everything really! the film itself is faultless. the only negative perhaps is steve carrell, not an awful actor but not very good either.

wouldnt call it an amazing all time classic, but all in all a good quality film well recommended.

one of those films that tries to squeeze 5 plots into one and sets itself up for a great finish, then only to fall flat on its face. starts out quite good but then the story seems to drag along. if the ending had been better it would have been a much better film but the finish was a complete damp squib.

overall, if you want to kill 2 hours then its watchable but nothing special here.

4.0 out of 5 stars above average romcom, 3 Dec. 2013
typical romcom plot but with a twist, they are both mentally impaired which makes for a some interesting viewing and some funny moments.

might have got 5 but it felt like it was missing something extra, the second half was disappointing after a good start. also the dialogue was too fast and inaudible in some scenes and the betting story at the end left me scratching my head

overall, not your typical cheesy, awful romcom, and with a bit of extra polish it could have been 5 stars. well worth a watch
