3.0 out of 5 stars Not the best..., 5 Feb 2014
This review is from: River (Audio CD)
If you compare this to Ju Ju Hounds, Miami, or the fantastic 117 Degrees, it really is one of Izzy's worst efforts. It also contains one of his worst songs - 'Run In',... and 'Feelin' Alright' isn't much better. The production is not as good as his other albums as most songs seem to distort slightly. 'Underground' and the title track are the best tunes here.

Avoid this one and buy 117 instead!

I was very excited to receive this item from Japan in it's original artwork CD form. The opener 'Ride On' is one of Izzy's best tunes with a great middle break section and an equally good outro. 'Spazed' is a fantastic psychedelic rock tune as is the instrumental 'Trance Mission'. 'Primitive Man' sounds somewhat like the Ramones but with Izzy's own take on their sound. All the other tunes are good time rock & roll and are very enjoyable. The great 'Highway Zero' ends this great album.

This record is much better than River, Fire & Concrete, though not quite up there with 117, Ju Ju Hounds and Like A Dog. It's a shame he never promotes his music or tours, as it beats any of his old band mates recent efforts.

4.0 out of 5 stars Splendid record!...though not as good as 'Kollapse'..., 1 Feb 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
On this album the band have created a heavier sound for the first half, followed by a softer more melancholic sound for the second. The title of the album leaves a lot to be desired...surely one of the worst the group have ever come up with. The first track (also the title track) starts promisingly, but then has a pretty awful middle section whilst the hideous FOGFWPLOE is chanted over the top, however, the song then breaks into a sublime, powerful coda which is every bit as good as the groups highpoints in the past. The second tune continues in a similar manner, as does the third. It is not until the fourth track that there is a break from the heavy sound, as beautiful minimal piano creates a new atmosphere, which is then followed by the best track 'What We Loved...' which is the emotional highpoint of the record, even if it doesn't build to the great heights of past tunes such as 'So Some Lonesome..', 'Ring Them Bells...' and 'Could've Moved Mountains' etc. The last track is a great experimental sounding closer to an overall pretty good record.

As much as I love this band it is a shame they have lost the instrumental chamber sound of their first 2 albums and have gone more rock orientated. '13 Angels...' from the first album remains my own favourite piece the band have recorded.

If new to the band I advise getting the albums in this order;

1) He Has Left Us Alone...
2) Born Into Trouble...
3) Horses In The Sky
4) Kollapse...
5) This Is Our Punk Rock...
6) Pretty Little Lightning Paw EP
7) F' Off Get Free...
8) 13 Blues...

5.0 out of 5 stars Overlooked Classic, 5 Jan 2014
This review is from: 117 (Audio CD)
I first bought this album when it came out. On first listening I didn't like it as much as the Ju Ju Hounds 1992 album, however, over the years I grew to love it and now maybe even prefer it to the Ju Ju's debut. Songs like 'Gotta Say' and 'Good Enough' have beautiful melodies, a laid back acoustic approach and great solo's by Rick Richards. These tunes are stronger than any of the acoustic G N' R songs he composed I believe. 'Parasite', '117' and 'Freight Train' recall the harder and punkier influences of his GN'R days, whilst 'Grunt' and 'Surf Roach' take him into newer Dick Dale sounding territory. It's odd Izzy's solo career never gained the attention Slash's did, when he was and still is a very capable songwriter and the guy who started it all in GN'R. Any of his albums are far better than listening the Axl Rose project/ disaster!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars The finest of Young's live albums IMO, 7 Nov 2013
This review is from: Year Of The Horse (Audio CD)
Many would say 'Live Rust' or 'Weld', but for me this is easily my favourite of Neil's live albums. I was never too keen on the production of the Rust albums, and Weld was pretty much a live greatest hits (even though I love them both). I always liked Neil's lesser known songs best and this album includes superb versions of rarer tracks such as, Dangerbird, When Your Lonely Heart Breaks & Human Highway. For anyone tired of hearing live renditions of Cinnamon Girl & Like A Hurricane, this is a must. A shame an acoustic version of 'Sample and Hold' wasn't included (like the one cut from Unplugged), or perhaps a Crazy Horse version of 'Pressure'...or even better 'Interstate' - the best song he never properly released!

2.0 out of 5 stars AC/DC's low point..., 25 Jan 2013

Many say Fly On The Wall or Blow Up Your video are the worst AC/DC albums, but for me it is The Razors Edge by a long way. While Chris Slade is good on 1992's Live, here he makes AC/DC sound like they are playing to a drum machine. Angus and Malcolm's guitars sound way too produced and clean on this record. On the plus side the first four songs are good (especially the title track).I had a copy of this album 20 years ago and never got into then, 20 years later it still sounds only okish in places. Fly On The Wall is so much better than this album.

When you consider Neil & Crazy Horse are still producing music this raw and having so much fun making it at their age it is very impressive. People who gave negative reviews should lighten up. Crazy Horse were never meant to be a polished commercial top 10 triumph! They make ragged, sloppy, grainy yet passionate music and that is why they are so great. In a world obsessed with perfection it is great to hear Neil still doesn't care for the more commercial road. This album is fantastic, although I have to say God Save the Queen could have been left off the record. Whilst it is amusing, it is a terrible anthem in the first palce which will never sound good! Happy listening!

Only The Lonely is one of John Candy's best movies. I really enjoyed wathching this again after a few years since I last saw it. Excellent performances from the cast, and good directing by John Hughes make this film a true classic. The only thing I would say is the packaging design/ artwork is terrible!! If I hadn't watched this film before I would be very put off buy the cover. Looks very tacky, but ignore that fact and Only the Lonely is well worth adding to your collection. Buy it!

4.0 out of 5 stars Classic John Candy, 26 Oct 2009

I hadn't seen this movie for about 20 years, since I was a kid, so I wasn't sure if I would still enjoy it, but I did! This is not Candy's best film - I would rate Planes, Trains & Automobiles, then Uncle Buck, then Only the Lonely before it (and in that order), yet it was still very enjoyable. Some classic lines, esp. the wammo joke! Classic comedy!!

Narrow Margin is a well thought out suspense thriller, that keeps you interested throughout. The film benefits from a beautiful Canadian backdrop, and a tense atmosphere created whilst Hackman and Archer are in hiding on the train. Good special features too! One of my all time favourite movies.
