4.0 out of 5 stars Valuable reading, but does it miss the point?, 14 July 2014

A thought provoking book that opened up new ways of thinking to me. I liked the suggestion that sensing a table by sight and touch give two perceptions that are different about the same thing, what you get depends on the instrument for observation you are using.(I wonder if that is why subatomic particles e.g. photons appear as both waves and particles)
On a more confused note the author seems to take the possibility of the self being an illusion as meaning it does not exist, I thought being an illusion meant that it is not quite what it seems. My other reading suggests the self is often taken to be consciousness and be in control of the person, whereas there is some evidence that this is not the whole story, hence the claim that the self may be an illusion.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good book with a lovely broad review of the current state of related disciplines., 2 May 2014

I was impressed by the clarity of description, and how other lines of reading were offered e.g. Elllen Langer's book on Mindfulness that I hadn't heard of before and who doesn't subscribe to formal meditation. Most, if not all, of the academics who write about mindfulness that I have read, agree on the basics and describe them in lots of different ways that probably resonate with a section of the readers and thus probably reach a wide audience. This book hits a lot of targets.

Crash Course: Acoustic Guitar
Crash Course: Acoustic Guitar
by David Mead
Edition: Sheet music

5.0 out of 5 stars Super book, also mentioned in another super book called Guitar Zero by Gary Marcus, 2 May 2014

The initial quite long description of the starting phases of learning is really clear and detailed, just what I need to confirm the expertise of the author.

3.0 out of 5 stars Loss of money on return, too much to make this a sensible purchase., 2 May 2014

On the face of it this was a good deal, but on receipt the finish around the sound hole was poor, and when played it jangled as if there was something loose. Checking the strings were properly located and shaking it about didn't reveal the cause. Perhaps I was just unlucky. The return procedure worked OK (as most things connected to Amazon) but I lost £15 on the whole business. Perhaps they should role the delivery price in with the article so you get that back in the event of a return, I guess paying the return shipping is fair, but other net suppliers offer free returns too. So shipping costs make this exploration of the suitability of a guitar a bit risky. But on balance the supplier played fair.
