This film is out now on DVD at long last. Unfortunately it is on 4.3 but it is on Region 0 PAL, despite what it says on amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, 22 Aug. 2008
What a charming film with the late great Bob Peck. I knew nothing about this film, even though it was shot near where I come from in Keighley, until I read about it in MADE IN YORKSHIRE. It is also based on true events which happened in Yorkshire.

I had thought it must be dire otherwise I would have heard about. How wrong I was. Was it shown in the cinema ? I have a job tracking it down but found a copy in the Keighley lending library.

Check it out as its well worth watching.

5.0 out of 5 stars A star, 21 Aug. 2008
This woman is a star. I first saw these in the 70's. She looked old then. Therefore I was amazed that she is still alive. They are so watchable because she really is a star. A lot of actors would pay to have what she has. You just watch her all the time. I just hope she has earned some money out of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes a classic, 21 Aug. 2008
I agree this is as good now, if not better than when it was first made. The only downside is that because it was not shot on film the tape stock has not lasted very well. That said it is what is on there that is more important and this is, without doubt one of the best TV series ever made.

If you have never seen it treat yourself. Watch it all in one go. Such larks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Harwood is a genius !, 21 Aug. 2008
When I first saw this in the cinema when it first came out, it was empty. For whatever reason no one went to see it.

Then it won Oscars and people now think it a great film. I sometimes wonder if they are affected by the awards. I don't think it was that well reviewed on first release.

I saw Ronald Harwood recently in Bradford. I have his screenwriting book. He said that he was chosen by the director to write it because he, Harwood had just written Taking Sides which is set in WWII and it about music. And you only thought actors were typecast.

I do wonder if the book on which it is based is any good.

The film really should be watched in all schools, now and at all times in the future. So few children these days know anything about history - before 1990, that films like this are an important tool to help them understand the horrors of mankind and how to prevent them in the future.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but could have been better, 21 Aug. 2008
This review is from: Calendar Girls [DVD] [2003] (DVD)
I do like this film but it is very, very American. Why ??

Did any of the classic Ealing comedies cater for Americans. Why do we do this so much.

Apparently Victoria Wood wrote a script of the same story but this one got made because it had an American part to it.

No doubt someone will make Wuthering Heights soon with Heathcliff going to America in his " missing" years.

Helen Mirren and Julie Walters are sooooo good in the film.

4.0 out of 5 stars The only Keighley man not to be in this film., 6 July 2008
This review is from: Yanks [DVD] [1979] (DVD)
Every other person you meet in Keighley over the age of 40 seems to have been in this excellent film. The acting is suberb except for American actress Lisa Eichhorn doing a really bad Yorkshire accent which almost spoils every scene she is in. Were there no Yorkshire actresses available ?

Richard Gere was not a star when he made it but was when it came out. Everyone who worked on the film said how friendly he was, unlike some other other American actors, all of whom seem to have not made it.

5.0 out of 5 stars From extra to MP, 6 July 2008
This review is from: The Railway Children [DVD] (DVD)
My MP Ann Cryer is in this film as an extra.

One of the best childrens films ever made in the UK. Jenny Agutter recently made another version ( her third; she was in the BBC serial of the same book prior to this version) this time playing the mother. However it was not as good and lacked the charm of Lionel Jeffries version.

A must for lovers of trains and Yorkshire.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great film, 9 Dec. 2007
This review is from: Brassed Off [DVD] [1996] (DVD)
Channel Four developed Brassed Off and The Full Monty at the same time. A man called David Aukin, I think had to decide which to make. He could only choose one, so he chose Brassed Off.

Although The Full Monty is an excellent film he made the right choice as Brassed Off is more complex with a greater insight into the problems facing "old" industries in the 1990's in Yorkshire.

Well done Mr Aukin and everyone who worked on this brilliant film.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Film ever shot in Yorkshire, 8 Dec. 2007
This review is from: Billy Liar [DVD] (DVD)
This is without doubt the greatest film ever filmed in Yorkshire - Bradford and a bit of Leeds ( and a short scene in Oxford Street). It has no faults, so rare for any film.

This was the film that made Julie Christie into a star, however she was not the first choice. The first Liz was played by Topsy Jane who became ill during the shoot and had to be replaced. Julie Christie was chosen because she was the first person they asked who was free to go to Bradford that week.
