5.0 out of 5 stars A template for all Blu-Rays, 18 Jun. 2011
This really is how all Blu-Rays and box sets should be done , stunning picture quality , two versions of each film , fantastic sound and hours , no... DAYS UPON DAYS of special features !

Have to admit I did wait for the price to drop , what with Amazons confounding pricing structure which tends to change UP and DOWN on a daily basis , selling the same box set for £10 one day then £60 the next , also a little wary of how the transfer was going to be as I've had a couple of "rip off" experiences when it comes to older movies being transferred to Blu-Ray.

Needn't have worried as this is one of the best transfers I've come across and would have been pleased with this box set if I'd paid full price , but at £19 its an absolute steal.

A lot of time , care and effort have gone into this to make sure that the technology of Blu-Ray has been utilised , and makes the Alien Quadrilogy DVD box set , which was excellent by the way , look positively archaic !
Didn't think that they could possibly cram anything more into this Blu-ray than what you already got on the DVD box set , but you get hours more features on this Blu-ray !
Its taken me weeks to get through it all , and there are some nice little touches too like the Wayland Yutani screen saver when you eject a disc.

Can't say enough about this box set and wish other companies who do their transfers would follow suit when it comes to older movies , and just shows what Blu-Ray can really do and how money grabbing and lazy some companies really are... See my Star Trek box set and Superman reviews for prime examples of being ripped off !

New films on Blu-Ray are generally excellent , but older films (anything pre 2006) are a real minefield to get a decent transfer.
But like this box set... you can strike gold !

5.0 out of 5 stars Its as if Darth Vader made it himself !, 17 Jun. 2011
Now I know that there are better AV receivers out there , but for pure looks you'll be hard pressed to find one better looking than this , and I do admit , I only bought this particular model purely on its looks as most AV receivers look like they belong in a radio tower on an army barracks.
I've been stunned at how brilliantly this thing handles and included is full HD 1080/60p and 24p video signals via HDMI, as well as the advanced audio codecs, including Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD high resolution audio, DTS-HD master audio and LCPM

Although there is a bewildering array of setup options that you can select from (2.0 all the way up to 7.1) , although, why you would choose anything other than 5.1 or 7.1 is beyond me , its standard factory setting is on 7.1 , but the main thing I was worried about with this AV receiver was that it changes 5.1 audio into 7.1 automatically , and I didn't want that "forced sound" from something that wasn't recorded in 7.1.
Having only a handful of films that are recorded in true 7.1 sound , this was a concern , BUT ! And heres the clever thing about it , it DOESN'T just pump sound through the extra speakers just for the sake of having them and really does make everything , including games consoles sound like a proper true 7.1 recording , as it transfers the sound flawlessly!
Now I know you're not actually getting anymore sound with the receiver doing this , but honestly , you'd have to be a professional sound engineer to be able to tell the difference between the 2 formats , the transfer really is that good!

Have Xbox 360 and Blu-ray hooked up with room to connect at least 8 other devices.
Game playing has been taken to a whole new level with this AV receiver , particularly driving or combat games , and when watching Blu-rays , I really couldn't tell the difference from a true 7.1 recording from a 5.1 audio track at all , and can't get over just how fantastic everything sounds.

I can't stress enough NOT to buy one of those DVD/Blu-Ray players with home cinema systems built-in having owned two of them , as they really are no where near in the same league for quality level , although there fine if you're just starting out.
The only reason I used them is because they came free with the TV's that I'd bought , that and the fact my old AV receiver desperately needed upgrading being 15 years old at that time , plus you usually can't connect any other devices to these all in one systems with the exception of maybe by a USB port , but a games console , Sky box or even your PC ? At the same time ??? Unlikely !

Theres also the added misery with these built-in systems of when the player breaks , your whole surround system breaks !
With an AV receiver if you needed to change your player due to damage or upgrade your player to...Whatever comes next , you don't have to buy the whole system again , and its only the recent use of HDMI cables for Blu-ray and games consoles that has forced me to upgrade... Well , that and wanting to have 7.1 as well , so its always best to buy a separate AV receiver when building a home cinema system as it will last you a minimum of 15 years before needing to upgrade again.

If you want a BRILLIANT 7.1 sound for your game playing or movie watching with looks that Darth Vader would be proud of with it strapped to his chest , this is the one to get... Certainly not the best you can buy more mid-range , but its far from the worst and still wipes the floor with these all in one systems...And DON'T even think about buying one of those awful SoundBars that are available , they truly are RUBBISH!

3.0 out of 5 stars A few minor glitches, 17 Jun. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This was the last of the speakers I bought to complete my 7.1 setup.
Really cant say enough about the other speakers I bought from Crystal Acoustics as they are faultless ...However !

Couple of gripes with the subwoofer , one is that when you get it out of the box you'll soon discover that it has a European/American 2 pin plug on the end of it and had to buy a 3 pin adapter , which only cost me £2.99 and wasn't that much of a problem , but really should have had a 3 pin plug to have started with.

Not sure if this was Amazons fault for sending a European/American speck or if the whole range is like that ???

My other gripe is that it has an automatic switch to stand-by after 10 minutes if no signal is detected and automatically powers up when a signal appears at the input...Good idea you might think ?...but this mode cant be turned off , and when watching a film where the subwoofer is hardly used you can hear it switching off with a faint clicking sound as it deactivates itself , as even high action films such as Star Wars or Aliens have their quiet moments that last more than ten minutes.

So if your watching a film by Michael Bay , where there's an explosion every 5 minutes or a slow-mo helicopter shot ever 1 minute , its fine , BUT FORTUNATELY ....most films aren't like that , so this really should be a minimum of one hour before stand-by kicks in as so you wouldn't hear it deactivating or just not have this mode to begin with.
Although my wife says she can't hear it switching off and says its just me... KEEP QUIET WOMEN AND GET ME SOME TEA !

Apart from these minor gripes it does look and sound (minus the clicking) excellent and finished in gloss black to match the other fantastic speakers I bought , but cant help thinking how this subwoofer (down to the stand-by mode) has let Crystal Acoustics down with their range of otherwise excellent speakers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quite Beautiful !, 17 Jun. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
These little beauties are absolutely gorgeous , so don't judge on the pictures as they really don't do them justice.
These really are a work of modern art and would still probably have bought them just for the way they look let alone sound.
A little on the expensive side for satellite speakers I admit , but when you get them out of the box , you'll be glad you spent the extra cash.
Nice solid heavy feel to them with gloss black sides , and the quality of sound you get really complements your movie/music experience with a rich crisp sound.
Got these to go with the 5.0 speaker set from Crystal Acoustics to build up to 7.1 sound , and these really don't disappoint.
If your thinking of upgrading to 7.1 then these little beauties are a great addition. Small , discrete and powerful.

The build quality and sound you get on any of Crystal Acoustics speakers that I've bought , I would have expected to pay twice the price, so these really are a bargain for what you get.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nice box ...Shame about the rest !, 6 Jun. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
My review title is not about Katie Price... The box it comes in is really quite good but that's as far as the enjoyment goes unfortunately. This really is the laziest transfer to Blu-Ray I've come across as you really don't get much in the way of hi-def viewing experience at all.
To add insult to injury these are the PRE TIDIED UP theatrical release versions , where bits of dust that got caught in the negative at the time of filming are still VERY visible and haven't had any effort to remove them as they are on the new print DVD versions , and the lack of extras compared to the DVD's is almost none existent.

Blu-Ray is an excellent format don't get me wrong ! When companies CAN be bothered to do it right on older movies like the Alien Anthology or even Tron for example (which only cost an extra £2 when buying Tron Legacy) , you'd think they'd filmed them only yesterday with state of the art cameras the picture quality is that good , and all having cleaned up prints of their films.

For me , removing dust contamination and cleaning up a negative on a film is the most basic of basic things to do before making a transfer to what is supposed to be the ultimate versions... They did it for the DVD's , why go backwards for the Blu-rays ?
I read in other reviews about how they couldn't transfer the updated versions because technical reasons or format differences blah blah blah , but I have NEVER HEARD of this problem with any other movie that exists , and make out as though the updated versions were filmed on some mystical one-off digital encrypted format that no one can ever access. So it just sounds like a lot of feeble excuses to justify the release of these particular versions from those people buying it !
Even to the point where a VERY boring and EXTREMELY dull person complained that I was "Obsessed with dust particles" and thought I was quite mad that I couldn't see that the contamination was at the very least in Hi-Def , and that this should be acceptable as high quality ! ... Honestly , some people really shouldn't be aloud to breed ! Dirt is still dirt no matter how sharp the image is and simply rolling a turd in glitter doesn't make it anymore appealing !

OK... Lets just say for arguments sake that they "REALLY" couldn't release the updated versions because of technical blah blah... Still doesn't explain why they haven't cleaned up these theatrical cuts for a Blu-ray release ?
The scene where the Enterprise leaves the docking bay in the Motion Picture (Meh , I like it) , has the worst case of dust and grit that hasn't graced my eyes since the days of VHS , but was wiped clean on the DVD versions , and I'm not talking about the speckling effect that some Blu-rays suffer from either , but actual clumps of dirt !

If any of you out there own the Alien Anthology box set on Blu-Ray you'll know , THAT IS HOW A BOX SET SHOULD BE DONE !
I love the Star Trek movies , even the odd numbered ones , but unfortunately for me this box set is one of those rare times where , IT PAINS ME TO SAY , to stick with the DVD's. The picture quality is more than adequate and you get a brand new clean print of the films with a ton more extras.

Not overly concerned about whether they're Directors cuts or Theatrical versions , although the choice would have been nice and really should have been a standard addition to this box set for the price their asking for , but what does concern me is the complete and obvious lack of effort made.
Whatever company did the Blu-Ray transfer certainly appears to have just pumped these out as quickly as possible to make a quick buck , and think that all the other reviews on how the picture is superb are just people being in denial that they've been suckered into paying for the movies yet again !... I've said it once and I'll say it again , dirt is still dirt no matter how sharp the image is !

5 stars for the box...5 stars for the films...Minus 100 stars for the transfer & extras

As for Katie Price ?....I would !

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent quality at this price range., 21 Nov. 2010
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
These speakers are just gorgeous to look at , although the picture shows them without the black mesh coverings so if you want them to look a little more discrete , you can.
These just sound awesome when hooked up to a 7.1 system , also bought a subwoofer and two satellite speakers from Crystal Acoustics and are also just as pretty to look at as they are to listen too , although a couple of minor glitches with the subwoofer (check my review) but nothing to do with the quality of sound.
Cant rate these highly enough as I would have expected to pay a lot more for this level of sound quality.
If you were in any doubt as to which speakers to go for you could do a lot worse and have been very pleased with this set.
Not sure why Amazon have put this on as a 5.1 speaker set when its only 5.0 , you DO NOT get a subwoofer with this bundle !
