5.0 out of 5 stars 4 stories into 1: What a fun! Come see the glory...of FISH STORY!, 1 Aug. 2010

There are four things that make a good movie: a solid story (which always should have a twist inside), great visuals, perfect acting and some flawless direction. Fish Story contains all of that, but is not just good, it's ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!

The first scene shows us a weird guy in a wheelchair driving through a deserted town while a meteor is getting closer to earth. Films who start like that can't let you down at all. With the story set in 4 different time zones, the movie has never any boring moment. Every segment stands on its own and ends with the first half of a cliffhanger ending. The last part of each ending is explained (and linked) in the final minutes of the film. When you watch those pieces coming together at the end, it simply leaves you breathless!

Another plus point is the title song (and its highly entertaining story incorporated in this film). I listened to a lot of punk rock but this track is totally awesome! It begins with an unlikely soft ballad intro (which creates a great atmosphere) and then shifts into powerful punk rock action. The silent part in the middle is NOT ruining the song but is giving it more depth. And last but not least the lyrics: they are absolutely outstanding, almost philosophical and require repeated listenings to fully understand them.

Third Window's 25th DVD release is a worthy anniversary title that fits extremely well with the company's other masterpiece movies. If you don't buy that, you'll miss a lot of thrills! 5 Stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars This Candy tastes sweet and sour!, 21 July 2010

Peppermint Candy is not your average kind of Drama and that's why I like it a lot. What a refreshing concept to let the story begin in the future and end in the past. At first we have no idea why the lead character is so sad and suicidal in the opening sequence. So we have to go back in time and find out what's driving him to his final decision. There we learn that he lost his money and wife. And to top it all he receives news that his true love lies on her deathbed. Many years before that he was a brutal cop (and treating his suspects in horrible ways). That's diminishing our sympathy for him a bit. Then we finally get to see his true love, but her scenes are too scarce, which is causing some questions:

It's obvious that both love each other, so what was the reason that they separated?
Or were they never together? But why did it seem that they were so close then?

When the film reached its end I thought: "Yeah, give it to me. Show me what happened between the two." But then the end credits were rolling. No fight, nothing.

There are some movies like Lost Highway or Marebito where you don't need an explanation of what's going on because they are supernatural thrillers. But a high - sophisticated Drama like Peppermint Candy definately could use some answer. It doesn't need to be a clear one, just something where we can get our own interpretation from.

Aside from the ending, this movie is providing some great dramatic moments that need to be seen. So don't miss it. 4 Stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beware! There's a dragon in your swamp!, 20 July 2010

The film starts off very promising with that fast but great opening scene which is some kind of mini biography of the lead character Haname. Then we are introduced to her daily routine of work for the magazine she's assigned to. That sometimes becomes a little bit boring but hold on, your patience will soon be rewarded with the appearance of Light Bulb(who might be Haname's long-lost dad). This guy's a real joker and responsible for a lot of fun later happening in Haname's life. Some unforgettabe example of that would be the scene where he wants to challenge himself by eating a meal in a restaurant fast enough to be back at home in time to close the water supply of his bathtub before it's running over. Simply hilarious, but my favorite part of the movie is the infamous King - Tut - Fortune - Telling - Machine. What a nice concept: the machine that looks like a egyptian pharao would ask you for your birthday and gender, and prints you in return the picture of your soon to be loved one.

But then it gets a little bit weird... Light Bulb is leaving and sells Haname his greatest treasure (for 1 Million Yen!): 5 tons of sand!
She takes it home and waters it and it turns out to be...drum roll please...a instant swamp! Then suddenly a dragon comes out of it flying straight to heaven.

All in all a very good film and worth your time because of the Pharao Machine alone! 3.5 Stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Highly entertaining comedy with nice twists!, 10 Feb. 2010

Fans of Tetsuya Nakashima (Kamikaze Girls, Memories of Matsuko) will absolutely like this movie. Even though he does not direct here (Nakashima only wrote the story/screenplay), the film is not disappointing at all. Director Masayuki Miyano is totally faithful to Nakashima's colourful visual style. The flick contains 6 short stories (which are all more or less linked to each other) about Japan's Sex Industry. In case you are now expecting something like a Pinky Violence DVD, you're on a wrong track. It's not the sexual scenes (by the way, they are not really graphic) that matter here. The funny situations that surround the sex stuff are much more important and make this film a Comedy Classic. As an added bonus fans of Deja Vu will get a nice surprise: The 43 year old mother on this DVD has a striking resemblence to Matsuko (from Memories of Matsuko)in her final years. 4.5 Stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lots of potential but not many kicks, 13 Jan. 2010

The film begins very promising but then it just gets too boring. I would have loved to see more of Yu Aoi instead. Her part was just too small. Maybe more of her could have made this movie a masterpiece. Why didn't they make Yu a Spy,too? Then she'd team up with Juri Ueno. Now that would have been fun! Don't get me wrong, this flick has potential but some certain kicks are missing. On the other hand, I wouldn't turn down watching a sequel.

5.0 out of 5 stars 10 Star Masterpiece!!!, 10 Jan. 2010

I don't like Hollywood movies, mainly because they are totally predictable and many of them contain some kind of glitter happy world that's absolutely not believable. When I watched the first minutes of Memories of Matsuko, I almost got the impression it's an very Hollywood - inspired film, probably because of all the beautiful visuals and the Musical Performances. Boy, I couldn't be more wrong with that! Soon I realized there was one of the best Dramas ever produced running on my TV screen. One of the reasons why this movie is so outstanding is the great combination it is displaying: You got beautiful pictures with happy musical songs (which are actually not that happy if you listen closely to them - you'll notice a little sadness) put together with the painful life story of Matsuko. I must confess I'm not a big fan of Happy Endings, because most films just don't deserve it. But it's totally different with Matsuko's story, after going thru such extreme hardships in her life she absolutely deserves the ending (and as a spectator of that you just can't help but cry when you see her finally at peace in heaven). Five stars is not enough for this MASTERPIECE!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Drama ain't getting better than this, 9 Jan. 2010

This movie is a close look behind the facade of a deranged family. That would sound boring to some of you, but give this film a chance cos it's absolutely amazing! The most interesting aspect of the story is truly the skeletons in the closet of each character and how they are affected by that. You like Eye Candy - films? This one's got totally awesome visuals including lead actress Eriko Sato (look at the DVD cover and you know what I mean). You like movies with twists? This one's got plenty of them, so get it now! Highly recommended!

I never avoid strange or complicated movies, mainly because you always find something refeshing new in them. This film is no different from that except that it completely blew my mind! There's not a single boring moment in its 4 hour running time! The Drama displayed here is toping everything I've seen so far. Never was an ending so justified in a movie! Definately worth the hype because if you have no expectations for the film you'll have the most amazing journey of your life seeing it! Buy it now and enjoy the Magic!!!!
