Fine acting by Philip Seymour Hoffmann or was he just being himself? Either way it was most effective. A good thriller, for once with no blood or someone getting shot. It held my attention and I could actually hear what they were saying.

3.0 out of 5 stars REPLACEMENT FILTER UNOBTAINABLE?, 2 Feb. 2015
I thought this was the best thing since sliced bread until the gauze filter 'perished'. Replacements seem to be unobtainable. So, great for a year or two but after that you need to replace the whole thing, in which case, not good value for money.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT VALUE FROM AMAZON, 30 July 2014

I haven't tried it yet but, hey, it's a Bosch!

A 650 watt Bosch power drill with its own carrying case for £40 (half the price of my original old 500 watt one) and sent post free in 2 days - what is there not to like?

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT, 20 Jun. 2014

An excellent performance from Tom Hanks. Highly enjoyable - streets ahead of its Oscar rivals. I had to turn the volume up (as usual) but at least I could understand the dialogue. Highly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars GRAVITY, 3 Jun. 2014
This review is from: Gravity (Blu-ray)
Indistinct dialogue, a cacophony of background noise and two very irritating characters spoiled what should have a been a great film. Yes, the special effects were marvellous but isn't one supposed to be able to follow the storyline as well?

3.0 out of 5 stars 12 YEARS A SLAVE, 29 May 2014
This review is from: 12 Years a Slave (DVD)
Virtually indecipherable dialogue, jarring background noise (and I don't mean the few bars of music soundtrack) and a compacted and disjointed story line amounted to a big disappointment for me, following this film's performance at the Oscars and the hype surrounding it. It's frequently been said before, but the book was far better. Whereas a film will often bring a book to life, the opposite was the case for me. Indeed, I'm glad I did read the book first as I probably would have had difficulty following the story - as did my partner who had not done so.

Nevertheless, it was well acted and the gratuitous violence, unbelievable cruelty and 'Southern' attitudes towards slavery brought home the horror of this man's experiences.

Utter tosh. Another £2+ wasted. I don't recall any of the newspaper reviews saying that this is essentially a film for kids. And as for the American military-style theme - yuck!!

4.0 out of 5 stars INTERESTING, READABLE BUT PREPOSTEROUS, 27 May 2014

This review is from: The Bisley Boy (Paperback)
An interesting proposition, readable and entertaining - but surely preposterous - with many of the main events which took place in Elizabeth 1's reign being glossed over, which is probably just as well as it was presumably not written with 'academic' intentions. Nevertheless, It would have been interesting to hear a new angle on Elizabeth's relationship with Mary Queen Of Scots, for example.
