5.0 out of 5 stars A heart breaking story set in WWII Paris - a must read for Rachel Hore fans., 12 Jan. 2016

This review is from: A Week in Paris (Kindle Edition)
I'd read the downloaded sample ages ago and the book just didn't appeal. For some reason I decided to purchase it and am so glad I did. It is a heartbreaking story of Kitty's life in Paris during WWII. What a fascinating story as she struggled with a young child, Fay, hardly seeing her doctor husband who was busy working at a nearby hospital and, although Kitty didn't realise it, helping get men out of the country. The book was packed with detail and was in places extremely sad. Unlike WWII stories set in the East End of London etc. life in Paris seemed much more somber and there was not much laughter which one gets in stories set in war torn Britain.

Two things I didn't like but these are my own opinion. Would have preferred the story told entirely by Kitty without jumping around between the 1940s and 1960s Fay. The timescales were too near and like other reviewers I tended initially to be muddled as to whose story I was reading.

I did not think the names Kitty and Fay suited the heroines. They needed much stronger names than what I envisage a Kitty and Fay are like which in my opinion suit rather delicate women. No offence to any Kitty or Fay out there.

However the above two points did not distract from the story which I found impossible to put down at times. Thoroughly researched and never boring after the initial chapters. Well worth reading for the historical content.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting story and recommend for a light read on a wet day., 4 Jan. 2016

Really enjoyed this book although characters could have been better written. Rachel was a bitch of the first order and not sure whether she got her punishment in the end. Shauna was a bit weak at times but after what she had been through before arriving in France one could expect her to take a while to settle into a very different environment from what she had been used to. Overall a fascinating story and well researched as far as owning vineyards was concerned.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for young people, 4 Jan. 2016
An extremely interesting book probably the author’s best yet in the series, starts off with Jack Pepper wanting to know more about his ancestor John Nelson Pepper. He finds out the astonishing adventures of the young John Nelson Pepper and his brother Andrew two young Yorkshire boys in 1915. Following the death of their mother, their Irish father placed them, in a boarding school in Dublin, but they were so badly treated there that they ran away, stowing away on a cargo ship which they thought was sailing to Liverpool from where they could get home, but they ended up in New York!

The author paints a vivid picture of the problems of two eight year olds facing up to life as stowaways, sailing both ways across the Atlantic in two very different ships, making friends with as they learned to cope with new and vastly confusing situations. The torpedoing of the Lusitania is memorable and the description of what happened as the liner sank in 18 minutes plunging 2,000 people into the Irish Sea, stays in the mind.

I liked the way nurse Mary ‘mothered’ the two boys, saving their lives by pushing them both into the same life jacket, and they in turn saved her life when they were all in the sea together.

This is a very heart warming story bringing generations closer together as we learn of and appreciate what our ancestors experienced. It also proved that young people can have adventures from the warmth of their own homes and don’t need to be outside to have fun during wet holiday weather. I strongly recommend this impressive story for all young people.

2.0 out of 5 stars A very limited book, 19 Nov. 2015

This book had virtually no depth to it. It was a story full stop. So much more depth could have been put into the story yet the main events were brief without much feeling. Worst of all was the number of typographical errors in the Kindle text. The characters were bland and although Gloria might have confessed all (not giving anything away with this remark) would she actually have dared say anything in the war years. Probably not. Not my type of book but we all have different tastes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very hard to put down book... loved it., 16 Nov. 2015

Brilliant second novel in series. Absolutely loved it from start to finish. Never got bored and just wonder how Lucinda Riley is going to keep all the sisters stories as good as the first two books.

The problem with such an interesting book is that it is difficult to find another book to read afterwards which is just as full and enjoyable. Aley's story was just so different in her quest for her real parentage and although I have never been to Norway I just love Grieg's music and can't wait for Tiggy's story due out Nov 2016.
