5.0 out of 5 stars Gay empowerment coming from antiquity, in a very enjoyable way., 25 May 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A very informative and, at the same time, enjoyable book. Gives a good idea of what homosexuality was in antiquity, in an inspiring and empowering way, for the contemporary gay reader. It provides all necessary information but in a lively and dramatized (by the author himself) way. Not a book for the scholarly interested but perfect for the average reader. Historically accurate according to its sources. Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative and emjoyable., 23 April 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Very informative about early christianity. The author undercovers many forgeries indeed. Only objection, I can't see the reason why to take the existance of the apostles for granted. Especially when forgeries were so common.
Overall a well written and enjoyable book.

The Song of Achilles

5.0 out of 5 stars The most famous love story between two men from antiquity, comes alive!, 1 Jan. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Song of Achilles (Paperback)
I 'd like to comment on whether the story of Achilles and Patroclus was a sexual one, as the author very rightly presented it in her book. Although subtle in Iliad, it was widely believed in greek -roman antiquity (from at least 6th century BC until well into the 5th century AD) that the two heroes were lovers, and their love was regarded with reverence in schools, army camps etc
Many ancient writers, philosophers, play writers represented it clearly as a homoerotic relationship ( Sophocles, Plutarch etc).
Male couples aslo used to visit and worship Achilles tumb in Troy, as very famously Alexander the Great and his lover Hephaistion did.
And of course there were other historic (and not mythic) male couples who were higly praised during antiquity, such as Harmodius and Aristogeiton, who helped bring the first ever democracy of the world in Athens.
So when in doubt about male to male relationships in antiquity, we should clearly trust ancient (not christian censored) sources, who seem to be more open minded about this particular subject, even compared to modern ones.

Fortunately Madeleine Miller also did that, and produced a wonderful book, fascinating and with thoroughly researched material.
Strongly recommeneded!!!

PS If only some day this could be filmed as a movie....nothing like the tedious "Troy" film of a few years ago...

3.0 out of 5 stars Informative but somewhat tiring., 7 Dec. 2013
The author has done extensive research and is accurate in most things described. He tries not to deliver a superficial touristic guide of the city, but to investigate into the real life of Athens and also Greece in general. Quite successfully, but not always. Also becomes tiring after a while. His obsession with the Middle East, where he 's lived for years, and the constant comparison to Greece, is rather naive sometimes (he's surprised to find bookstores in Athens for example !!!!) and very trivial, focusing on details rather than wider notions of democracy, freedom, education etc which actually shape a nation's life and mentality. Also his other obsession with greek folk music, is way overdiscussed and may not interest the potential reader. (a somewhat amusing instance is when he visits a mainly classical music concert hall and leaves when he realizes there's no bouzouki music!!!).
Overall an informative book nevertheless.

2.0 out of 5 stars Pretty accurate, except an "embarassing " (?) field... Why???, 18 Oct. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Good, pretty accurate and generally enjoyable book.... BUT:
There s no mention whatsoever of any element of homosexual conduct, a proven and important part of the life of male Athenians . This matter was carefully omitted by the author , especially in two places where it should definitely be mentioned : the Gymnasiums and the Symposiums.
There s plenty of evidence of sentimental connections of men, both older with younger plus younger among themselves,(plenty of erotic writings and images in the gyms) and definitely of male to male sexual intercourse , especially during feasts .
I would expect a more objective view on the matter by a book published in 2008 (!) London, instead we get a carefully scrutinised "christian" version...pitty !!

5.0 out of 5 stars intelligent humour, 24 Jun. 2007

This is one of the best comedy series I 've ever watched!
Absolutely delightful!
It helps a lot to know a bit of France's 18th century history but the humour is so contemporary in any case! And all the actors are brilliant.
Definitely a good purchase. Scales higher than any French & Saunders show!
Now that French revolution, Marie Antoinette etc. are so popular stories again (thanks to recent films)... could we hope for a second series from Mr Learmouth? If only...
