5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic reworking of a Francis Durbridge classic, 26 July 2009
This review is from: Melissa [DVD] (DVD)
I am a huge fan of the 1974 production which remains faithful to the Original story. However I would have been very disappointed if this 1997 version had of turned out to be precisely the same. Whilst it would have still been very watchable it would have been essentially going over old ground due to the excellently portrayed earlier version. What Alan Bleasdale gives us in his version is a prologue to the original story which provides additional story lines and much more background to the original characters and how some of their pasts link up with one another. In the original story Cape Town is only mentioned in passing, however Alan Bleasdale uses this setting to portray Guy's past and how he meets Melissa as well as a backdrop for three additional murders. In my opinion this production was brilliantly written and offered us something much more than just a straight forward adaptation and the additional material fits seamlessly in to the original story. The cast consists of very well established names which results in very strong and memorable performances all round.

5.0 out of 5 stars Faithful adaptation, enjoyable mystery drama, 26 July 2009

This review is from: Melissa [DVD] [1974] (DVD)
This version of Melissa is very enjoyable to watch and having read the book by Francis Durbridge entitled 'My wife Melissa' it remains faithful to the original story. Despite the basic studio set and the now dated appearance it still stands the test of time as a well performed murder mystery. I would have been too young to have seen the original broadcast, however I can imagine how popular this mystery must have been at the time as despite it now being 30+ years old I found it throughly compelling and have watched it again many times since.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disapointing, 19 April 2009
After such a successful dramatisation of the Camomile Lawn I was looking forward to seeing the Vacillations Of Poppy Carew, especially considering the cast, Sian Phillips, Joseph Fiennes, Tara Fitzgerald to name but three. Unfortuntely the end result is unpolished and looks very cheap in comparison. Having read the novel beforehand quite a lot of the story is missing and only runs for 1 and a half hours. The Camomile Lawn is a similar size novel and had the benefit of 4 hours to produce a faithful adaptation. Very disapointing considering how good it could have been.

3.0 out of 5 stars Worthy adaptation considering the limited resources, 29 Mar. 2009
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This is essentially a very accurate P&P adaptation, in particular the use of the dialogue from the novel. Considering the obvious budget constaints (Limited outdoor broadcasting, use of studio sets rather than actual Stately Homes) the end result is a competent production that can still be enjoyed after nearly 30 years. The characters are portrayed brilliantly, in particular David Rintoul as Darcy and Marsha Fitzlin as Miss Bingley. In this version Darcy keeps his true feelings for Lizzie much more hidden. on balance the 1995 is the complete package (due to funding) however this version is certainly worth watching. One final point, you can buy a this on region 2 via Amazon Germany. At the start menu change the language to English. As it is a British production it is the original dialogue, not dubbed.

2.0 out of 5 stars Bitterly disapointed, 29 Mar. 2009
This review is from: This Life +10 [2007] [DVD] (DVD)
This life series 1 and 2 was fantastic, however very few TV shows have had a successful comeback after a prolonged period of abscence. Therefore when I sat down to watch it I bore the above in mind. Even allowing for the 10 year gap I was still bitterly disapointed. What made This Life so brilliant was its frankness, realism, mixture of characters and it's city location. What this comeback gave was a country house setting and with the exception of Anna complete strangers who 10 years ago felt like people we all knew.

3.0 out of 5 stars Worth Watching, 25 Mar. 2009
The cinematography is beautiful, a well acted film and certainly worth watching. However 2 hours is not enough time, as a result the dialogue is rushed and the story moves at an alarmingly fast rate. The BBC 1995 version cleary shows that 5 hours are necessary to do P&P justice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful drama, 21 Mar. 2009
I first watched ths programme when it was first broadcast on LWT in 1987 and again as recently as a few months ago and it has lost none of its appeal or edge. Fantasic performances all round. I have recently read the book by Allan Prior and the series is so precise that the book becomes the script. Its other strength is that it will never date as it is set in a very specific time @ 1938

Harnessing Peacocks (Black Swan)
Harnessing Peacocks (Black Swan)

Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars Engaging read full of life's ups and downs, 18 Mar. 2009
I really enjoyed this novel and found, like Mary Wesley's other novels the characters are interesting and real. I have noticed in several of the books written that they often refer to characters from the Camomile Lawn, and one of the character's great Aunt is Calypso. In this particular story there are many different characters and I found remembering them all to start with quite difficult. However once you get into the story you find they each have their role to play and it is easy to follow

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb TV adaptation of Mary Wesley's most famous work, 18 Mar. 2009
This review is from: The Camomile Lawn [DVD] (DVD)
I thoroughly enjoyed this adaptation and it stays faithful to the book. Only towards the end do you find a few omissions or minor changes, however nothing instrumental to the plot. The acting is excellent and the scenery superb. The house in Cornwall is now run as a Bed And Breakfast, what a treat for any fan. My only disapointment with the 2008 DVD edition is that after 16 years from its original broadcast it would have been wonderful if it had been digitally remastered as this would have sharpened up an at times grainy appearance. However I still rate it 5 stars as this has no bearing on the overall quality of the production.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good first novel, well developed characters., 18 Mar. 2009
On the whole I really enjoyed this book. The characters were believable and easy to picture in your mind. In fact after reading the book I discovered that the story had been made into a TV drama and Shelia Hancock played the part of Matilda. This matched my idea of Matilda perfectly. My only critisim is that the last few chapters and the eventual outcome left me feeling quite low. A more bitter sweet conclusion would have given the story a more balanced ending.
