Kingmaker: Winter Pilgrims
Kingmaker: Winter Pilgrims

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Read, 29 May 2014
This is a complete change of direction for the successful author of a number of very amusing parodies. "Kingmaker: Winter Pilgrims" is a first class novel, set at the start of The War of The Roses. The author has meticulously researched the facts on which the book is based and constructed an excellent story around them. He makes no attempt to sanitize the events in which the main characters are involved and thus gives the reader a very accurate insight into these cruel and unforgiving times. The battle scene descriptions are especially harrowing and have a dreadful ring of authenticity about them that a less courageous author might have diluted. The book is a mighty tome but the pace of the story never slackens and I had great difficulty in pacing myself through it. I await the next volume of what I understand is to be a trilogy with considerable anticipation and impatience; and a feeling that I shall lose more sleep.

This is by far the best version of the Musical "Annie". Don't even think of buying the Albert Finney alternative. I had to buy a new multiregional DVD player just to play this but it is just so worthwhile. It's an absolute classic. "Easy Street" is absolutely perfect.

Rather like the "Alice" books but with a moral, albeit an unexpected and invariably unhappy one. Not a book for the Nursery.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent film, 8 Sept. 2013

This review is from: To Kill A King [DVD] (DVD)
I enjoyed this film very much. Watching Cromwell take the well-trodden path of those who find that " power corrupts..." was, I thought, well portrayed in the lines of the script. Yes, I'm sure that the hopes of those reviewers seeking perfect chronological accuracy may not have been fully realised but the film remains true to the overall thrust of the developments of the time and compares very favourably with the many films currently on the circuit dealing with other historical events. For instance, I would think it improbable that Francis Drake actually ignited the fire ships as in " Elizabeth: The Golden Age " but I still enjoyed the film. The acting in this film is universally excellent although I found Tim Roth rather disappointing in the early scenes; but perhaps I was expecting too much after his terrific performance in " Reservoir Dogs ". That said, his rather clipped, succinct delivery is much more appropriate to his change of character in the second half of the film. Fairfax is superb throughout as he watches in, at first, bafflement and then horror the downward descent in his friend and co-conspirator. The dilemma in which he finds himself immediately after their success is beautifully scripted and portrayed, as is that experienced by his wife and her family and does much to explain the events that occurred subsequent to Cromwell's demise. Rupert Everett is superb as Charles the first resisting the temptation to depict him as an effete, rather peripheral figure overtaken by events. His dignity and firm belief in his " Divine Right " to govern are beautifully portrayed as are his efforts to influence events from his isolation and his refusal to sign the document that would have ensured his survival. The script has some lovely, thoughtful lines that are generally well-delivered and the post-battle scenes are realistic without yielding to the modern generation's preoccupation with gore. I strongly recommend you see this film.

I've seen this opera all over the world and nothing has ever come close to this magnificent production. It has always amazed me that, other than an equally superb Carmen, it didn't provoke a rash of film versions of the popular operas. Currently I attend all the direct transmissions at local cinemas from the ROH, Glyndebourne and Met and these are gradually improving as producers realise that their singers are now not only required to be able to act but also, with the advent of close-ups, look appropriate to the part. Glyndebourne recently, in their dreadful production of " Ariadne auf Naxos" chose to ignore this rather basic principle with an Ariadne of significantly greater physical proportions than I suspect Strauss intended. Similarly, the Met recently tried to convince us that Radames' suicidal choice of a muscular Aida over a much slighter Amneris, who came with a kingdom and great riches, was one that we should accept as not fundamentally undermining the plot.
Everything in this wonderful "La Traviata" is pretty much perfect.

Prosy. Dull. Overlong. Unnecessarily complex. Huge reiterative sentences of little actual content. Attempts to be much more than an adventure story. Why? How on Earth did it get to be a classic? Read Tom Sawyer and compare. I'm determined to finish it but only because I hate to be beaten.

Tortured sentence construction makes this book tiresome to read. The storyline is so improbable that it is never remotely frightening. Read other books by this splendid author.

I read this book as a child and thoroughly enjoyed it as a ripping adventure story. I'm now seventy and decided to read it again. This time, I found that it is one of those two-level stories, fine for children to dash through and absolutely marvellous for adults to take the time to enjoy Twain's wonderful prose. His treatment of the slavery issue is non-judgemental and matter-of-fact. It reflects things as they were at that time. The final chapters regarding Jim's escape are extremely funny and made me laugh so loudly that I woke my wife up. No mean feat.

This system is absolutely terrific. The larger Filofaxes have to be carried around by hand or brief case. This one fits in a pocket or handbag. The "Week to View" version is the best: there's enough room for several daily entries without making the filofax too bulky.
I've been using the system for some ten years and I run my entire life therein. The filofax principle means that the annual transfer of information from the old diary to the new becomes redundant: that information, addresses, telephone numbers etc.,remains in the filofax. Only the diary section needs to be replaced.
