Dr Pelham has drawn upon obscure records of Birmingham to provide insights into population movement in Birmingham & Aston, citing names & trades. For those of us who were unaware that the records existed this book provides is a real treat.
It is a great pity that the war interupted Dr Pelham's research into Birmingham history, but at least he provided us with this gem of a book.

This modest directory, organised alphabeticaly according to surname, is a welcome contribution to Birmingham's all too small number of directories of the period. The entries are clear & easily readable, though it is a reproduction as distinct from a transcript.

If your interest lies in well researched history, you might consider avoiding this book. The Victorian author Thomas Edgar Pendleton, hoarded play bills & other scraps from which he put together this short booklet. It is cetainly not a book that I would consider worth my time reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Old English Glass Houses by Francis Buckley, 18 Jan. 2015

Rsearched with great attention to detail, Francis Buckley's book is something of a classic in this niche area. What is particulary impressive is that the work was carried out before the internet existed!
Chapter topics include glasshouses in the Leeds district in the 17th, 18th & early 19thC, the Wear 18thC, the Tyne in the 18thC, early Bristol, old Nottingham, Cumberland, Stourbridge 1700-1830, Dudley & Worcester, Birmingham 1740-1833, old London, various old glasshouses, the West Country and old Lancashire. Each chapter has an appendix giving sources.
The chapter on Birmingham includes writings on Snow Hill Glasshouse, Aston Glassworks, the New Town Glasshouse in Walmer Lane, the Islington Glassworks, the Soho Glassworks, the Union Glassworks, the Greatbrook Street Factory, the Spon Lane Glassworks, Osler's Broad St Glassworks and a section on miscelaneous people in the industry.
These days there are very few more sources available such as wills, Genealogy records, tiithes & tax records, but Francis Buckley appears to have located the core records.

This review is from: In the Midst of Life (Paperback)
In the Midst of Life addresses a subject hitherto overlooked. Joseph McKenna, always readable & an impecable researcher, peppers his book with real insights into Birmingham's burials and he has pitched the illustrations just right.

This Robus Bathroom Compliant Ceiling Globe has 2 wires, whereas my ceiling light has 4 wires. There are no instructions on how to resolve attatching 2 wires to 4. Get an electrician in? In this area I have had such bad experiences with the standard of work carried out by the proffessionals that I simply do not trust them anymore.
It looks like I'll have to get a conventional lampshade instead of a globe. Pity, as the globe looked nice when I got it out of the box.

Am I parting with my copy? Not likely!
