2.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful writing about the dull lives of dull characters., 6 Jan 2009
This review is from: Never Let Me Go (Paperback)
I read this through to the end. Was this really a Booker prize contender? Its dull, nothing ever happens. The heroine needs to get a life rather than reminiscing about the past (which was dull). Beautifully drawn characters do not compensate for dullness. Nothing happens. They drive here. They walk there. Its dull. The characters are dull. What makes it even worse is the conceit used again that goes: "this would have happened, except for what happened next". You read on expecting something to happen next - it doesn't. Did I say it was dull?
Conclusion: save yourself 3 hours and read the last 3 pages. Everything that goes before adds nothing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just brilliant, 6 Jan 2009
This review is from: Roll With It (Audio CD)
I used to listen to this about 25 years ago on cassette. It died and I forgot about this album. I bought it wondering if it was really as good as I remember.

Yes it is. This is a truly great album - groove, lyrics, melodies, awesome musicianship are all there in spades. Not a dud track.

This is a treat for your ears.

1.0 out of 5 stars Much hyped, but very disappointing, 6 Jan 2009
Like millions, I looked forward to this CD and bought it as soon as it was out.

What a disappointment. Instead of the sublime melodies of Rush of Blood we get overblown orchestrations that swamp any melody. The lyrics are often lost behind a wall of sound - not that that matters too much as they are generally banal rubbish.

This is a CD ruined by overproduction. But this may be a cover for poor lyrics, no melody and not a singable song among them.

Don't waste your money. Listen to their earlier stuff and wonder where it has all gone so badly wrong.
