5.0 out of 5 stars Another impressive German account, 31 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Another impressive German account showing the quality of their men. Had their leadership not been so badly flawed the history of Europe might have been very different.
In this man's case though things were different as he became part of the new Germany, and brought some of the qualities of the old Germany with him.
A fascinating read.

5.0 out of 5 stars a must read, 31 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An excellent book.
Despite being on the other side it is impossible not to respect this man.
Not all Germans were Nazis, this one was, but it is still hard not to respect what he did for his country.
A fascinating but ultimately tragic story.
See also Norbert Hanning and Heinz Rudel's stories which make similar points.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for a truer picture of the war on the eastern front, 31 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Incredible. Despite being on the other side it is impossible not to respect this man.
This gives an interesting insight into the German mind during WW2 and raises a few questions about the version of history that was written by the victorious Allies after the war. Any attempt by Germans to set the record straight on eastern Europe was ignored as people could not see past the truly awful things that were also done such as the extermination of the Jews and other racially motivated crimes against humanity.
But these were not offences committed by this man, a dedicated Luftwaffe officer who would have been a credit to any nations' airforce.
The retreat from Russia was painful to read at times - it's hard not to feel real sympathy for the Gerrmans fighting in the East. Some of the points he made then about the Russians as a political force were ignored at the time, and for many years after the war, but now, 70 years later it appears that he was correct! (Whilst reading this book Russia was invading/annexing Crimea which is still ongoing...)

5.0 out of 5 stars Most people would give up after loosing a leg - within a month he was back in action in his JU87 - impressive!, 31 Mar. 2014

This review is from: Stuka Pilot (Kindle Edition)
Another incredible example of the quality of the German fighting man.
This man's story is very similar to that of Norbert Hanning - both fought hard against impossible odds in the retreat back from Russia into Germany.
Another 'enemy' who it is impossible not to respect, admire and like.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic British story..., 31 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
An interesting story; Neave went on to play a major role at Nuremberg and was unusually privileged to go from being a POW in Colditz to later having access to all the key players in Nazi Germany whilst in their pre-trial captivity.
Not a criticism of Neave, just an observation, but he does come across as very hardline conservative even then and as unbending in his views as the Germans he opposed.

5.0 out of 5 stars The war on the eastern front was a picnic compared to life afterwards under Stalin..., 31 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This book is incredible and shocking.
The military part of it is quite interesting but not especially remarkable - it's what happens after the war that is the most interesting and tragic part of it all and at times made me feel very sad indeed.
Life in Stalinist Russia is an example of just how uncaring human beings can be to each other - and that was how they treated fellow citizens. WW2 only ended in 1945 for some people - for others it continued until 1989!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth reading, 31 Mar. 2014

Another German veteran it's hard not respect.
From an aesthetic background this young man developed as consciencious young officer who stuck by his training and beliefs.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very lively informative story, 31 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
A very lively informative story - this man was lucky not to suffer the fate of Bruno Sutkus after the war.
This is very descriptive and pulls no punches describing the depths of human depravity in the eastern war.
If the English or Americans had been involved in this theatre they might have seen things differently by 1945

5.0 out of 5 stars A most unusual war story - if you like motor-racing you'll love this..., 31 Mar. 2014
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
Reading this you might forget there was a war on.
Although this man was a professional travel writer it is clear that the war is just a distraction - his German mindset is impressive to see - and anyone who follows Formula 1 motor-racing will see shades of Michael Schumacher there.
A very enjoyable read - recommended to war historians and motor racing fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars An interesting read, 31 Mar. 2014

An interesting war history.
Generally a quite sector apart from a few 'bad days at the office' in 1944.
Read with Sid's War - Sid Capon.
