4.0 out of 5 stars A good yarn from start to end, 8 Oct. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: Operation Napoleon (Paperback)
Quite deliberately, i have not read any of the previous reviews, thus no bias can accrue! This is a good yarn from the beginning to the very last page. It is not literary, it's on a par with something like Jack Higgin's The Eagle Has Landed and is entertaining rather than mind-expanding. As the first work I have ever read by a contemporary Icelandic poet, it does hold the attention.

I have had a long sleeve version of this Solardry shirt for some time and this is just as good though XXL is only just large enough and I thought it would be more than ample.

5.0 out of 5 stars More than just a good yarn, 3 Oct. 2011
It must be about forty- five years ago that I first read of Suetonius and Agricola, nothing since then until this novel. Well, what a delight! Part way through, I started to think that the author might have had a military career. For sure. Look it up. The level of detail really enhances the story even if we cannot be quite sure that events happened the way he suggests. Very evocative for me of places I have known for years.

4.0 out of 5 stars Watch it for The Peak District scenery!, 29 Sept. 2011
Verified Purchase(What is this?)
This review is from: The Holding [DVD] (DVD)
Well, that's a tad tongue in cheek because it's the reason I purchased the DVD...and actually it's worth it for that reason. My immediate reaction when it finished was Straw Dogs meets On The Black Hill and that Aden's demise at the very end was distinctly black humour. The 'artistic' scenes were a little bit too predictable but it's worth viewing nonetheless.

Ways Of Escape (Vintage Classics)
Ways Of Escape (Vintage Classics)
by Graham Greene
Edition: Paperback

4.0 out of 5 stars A Sort Of Life continued..., 18 Sept. 2011

There is a little overlap with the earlier volume but that really just helps set the scene. This volume takes us into his Secret Service years and I can't help thinking they continued long after he ostensibly left it (perhaps the well-received biography addresses this facet). Although I'm not a real fan of Greene's oeuvre, you cannot deny the long term impact, e.g. the Third Man is covered in this volume and I was lucky, in the last two days, to take Dr Timmermann's Third Man Tour and visit The Third Man Museum in Vienna. At the end, you start to realise some of Greene's long-term influence.

One of the key reasons for purchasing this for my wife was the mobile 'phone pocket at one end (according to one of the images). Well, there isn't one! It's probably fair value. Velcro steps are very secure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Against my will, I'm impressed, 5 Sept. 2011
Typed by iPad keyboard so this is succinct! Apart from not being able to touch type, as on my laptop, this is an amazing tool. No tedious booting up, synchronicity with work email and calendar, lots of apps available, ability to enlarge images and text so easily, I could go on. Plus it is all just so intuitive. Amazing. Getting the 3G SIM card soon which will make this tool so useful.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real page-turner, 23 Aug. 2011
This review is from: The Man From Beijing (Paperback)
Although I've seen the Branagh adaptations of Wallander, the only Mankell novel I had previously read was 'Depths'. Well, The Man From Beijing is very different in the sense that I really could not put it down. It might not be as literary as Depths but it most certainly holds one's imagination. Wish now that I had read it upon first publication.
